PLOW.
Specification o! Letters Patent.
Appuamon mea ummm 1a, 191s. serial 1v. 800,415?
5 of becoming a citizen of the United States,
and a resident of the cit of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Il inois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plows, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to plows and the object of this improvement is -to provide simple and effective means for adjusting the front wheels of the plow in order to gage the furrows made by the plo A further object 1s to provide a means for carrying the plow when in inoperative condition.
Other objects will aplpear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter declaimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part ofl this specification, and m which,
Figure 1 is a plan view of a gang plow embodying my invention, Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmetal view taken on line 2-2 in Fig. 1, Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the plow, and Fig. 4 is an enlarged section taken on line 4-4 in Fig. 1.
The preferred form of construction as illustrated in the drawings comprises a front axle 4 provided with steering knuckles 5 pivoted to the ends thereof. J ournaled on one of the steering knuckles is a land wheel 6 and on the other steering knuckle is a furrow wheel 7, the furrow wheel being larger than the land wheel as is the case in ordina'IIy gang plows of this nature.
he forwardly extending arms of steering knuckles 5 are connected together by means of a connecting link 8, the latter being provided with a slot 9 extending longitu inally thereof. On the front side of axle -1 is a bracket 10 secured thereto by bolts 11 or their equivalent. Pivoted to the forwardly extending arm of bracket 1() is a tongue 12, pivoted on the bolt 13. The tongue 10 is provided with a slot 14 the latter being disposed across and beneath the slot in connecting link 8. At each end of slot 9 is a bearing member 15 and rotatably mounted in said bearing members is a screw bolt 16, the latter being locked against longitudinal movement by means of -collars 17. A pin 18 is threaded on screw bolt I6 and depended through slots 9 and 14 and provided with a nut 19 at its lower end adapted to maintain connecting link 8 and tongue 12 close together.
Secured to the rear side of axle 4 is a C- shaped member 20 in which is provided vertical guides 21. A screw bolt 22, provided with an operating crank arm 23, is rotatablyl mounted 1n the upper end of said C-sha d member 20 and extended downwardly adcent the guides 21. Mounted on the -gui es 21 is a frame 24 havin threads engaging the threads of screw r 22 in a manner to cause vertical movement of the forward end of said frame on guides 21 upon rotation of said screw rod.-
Two plow members 2 6 are each provided with ashank 27 and the latter secured to the frame 24 by means of shoulders on said Shanks and bolts 28 passing through said Shanks and frame.
At the rear end of'frame 24 is a wheel mounting 29 pivoted to said frame as at 30. J ournaled in the lower end of the mounting wheel 29 is a wheel 31 and at the upper en of said wheel mounting is a connecting link 35 operatively connecting the upper end of said wheel member with a manually operable lever 32. A spring actuated catch 33 is pivoted to the upper end of 29 and adapted to engage a in 34 on lever 32 to lock the rear end of rame 24 in its upper or inoperative position.
In order to cause the plows 26 to make a wider or narrower furrow the screw rod 16 is rotated in order to move the pin 18 1ongitudinally thereof. This movement causes connecting link 8 to be moved longitudinally and hence swing the steering knuckles 5 thereby causing the wheels 6 and 7 to be directed at an angle toward tongue 12.
When the wheels 6 and 7 are directed in the' manner indicated by their dotted line positions shown in Fig. 1,these wheels cause the front end of the plow frame to crowd toward the land wheel 6 thereby causing plows 26 to make wider furrows. When connecting link 8 is adjusted in the opposite direction and swinging the steering wheels in the opposite direction wheels v6 and 7 will tend to crowd in the opposite direction and cause plows 26 to make a narrower furrow.
In order to cause the plows to make deeper furrows the screw rod 22is rotated by means lPatented Mar. 2, 19'15.
wheel mounting of handle 23 to lower the front end of frame 24 on guides 21 thereby causing the points of plows 26 to enter the ground farther. When the plow is not in use and it is desired to transport it from one place to another lever 32 is swung to bring wheel 31 and its mounting 29 to their full line positions shown in Fig. 3. This movement raises the rear end of frame 24 to clear the plows r from the ground as clearly shown in While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A device of the kind described comprising a frame; plows carried by said frame; an axle at the forward end of said frame; steering knuckles pivoted to said frame; steering wheels journaled on said knuckles; a connecting Ylink connecting said steering knuckles and provided with a longitudinal slot therein; a tongue pivoted on said front axle and having a longitudinal slot therein; the slot in said connecting link being disposed across the slot in said tongue; a pin passing through said slots; and an adjusting screw mounted on said connecting link and threaded through said pin, substantially as described.
2. A device of the kind described comprising a plow frame; a front axle secured to said frame and having steering knuckles thereon; a connecting link connecting said steering knuckles, there being a slot in said connecting link; bearings on said connecting link at the ends of the slot in the latter; a tongue pivoted to said front axle and havin a slot therein crossing the slot of said link; a pin passing through said slots and having an enlargement at its upper end; a nut threaded on the lower end of said pin below said tongue; and a screw journaled in said bearings and threaded in the enlargement of said pin, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I `have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
MICHAEL KUNIK.
