Patented Mar, 2, 11915,
Application filed. May 4, new. serial No. $336,192.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, WILLIAM E. Sennavrnrin, a citizen of the UnitedStates, residing at Coal City, in the county of Grundy and State of lllinois haveinvented new and useful lmprovements in Toilets, of which the following is a lull, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part ofthis specification.
'My invention relates to improvements in toilets with especial reference to those adapted for use in railroad cars and boats and has for its object the production of a device embodying two receptacles each arranged to open and close independently of the other.
A further object is the production of a device that can be easily made and assembled and one that is not liable to disarrange merit of parts.
These and such other objects as may hereinafter appear are attained by my device, an embodiment of which is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my device; Fig. 2 represents a sectional view through the center line showing the device proper.
Lilac numerals of reference indicate like parts in the several figures of the drawings Referring now to the drawings, 1 repre-- sents a car floor, 2 a partition, 3 the toilet,
comprising in the main the upper toilet or.
receptacle l, a lower chamber or receptacle 5 and a passage 5 connecting the chambers.
The upper chamber is provided with a movable bottom 6 operable from within in any desired manner, as by means ofthe' handle 7 and lever connection 8, 8. it is to be noted that the washer 9 is inter osed between the movable bottom 3 an the wall 10 of the upper receptacle, the idea heto rnalre a water-tight joint between the receptacles. The lower receptacle iiis also provided with a movable bottom ll, which can be swpng open by means ct levers l2 and 13 and a handle 14. llt will be noted that this handle it is preferably placed op.-
posite to compartment inf-which the toilet,
is located and means, such as a linlr l5, are provided at the top of this handle member which can be swung into engagement with a hoolr 16, leaving the bottom 11 permanently open if desired. A cover 117 is provided hinged at 18, in any desired manner.
lt ofiten becomes advisable when trains are stopping in a station or passing through to close the lower receptatcle, which can be done by the porter without in any way atfooting the use of the device; at the same time, the ability to do this is entirely out of the controlot the passengers and rests only with the porter or party in charge.
The device is of very simple construction, and, as shown is made preferably of a single I porcelain or metallic member-so as to be ing to retain the contents in each receptacle and forming a sealed compartment of the lower receptacle between the closures, and a manually controlled operating rneanstor each closure, said. operating means being lid separate and distinct from and operable v wholly independent of each other. 7
2. A device. otthe class described, comprising a pair of communicating receptacles arranged one over the other and each having a discharge opening, a closure for each opening to retain the contents in each receptacle and forming a sealed compartment of the lower receptacle between the closures,a manually controlled operating means for each closure, each of said operating means being separate and distinct from and operable wholly independent ot each other, and means for securing the lower closure in an open csition.-
3. ll device'oi the class described, comprising a pair of communicating receptacles arranged one over the other and each having a discharge opening, closure for each opening to retain the contents in each receptacle and forming asealed compartment of the lower receptacle between the closures, a manually controlled operating means for each closure, each of said, operating means being separate and distinct'trorn and operable wholly independent at each other, the operating means of the lower closure being till ice
inaccessible to a person using the other closure operating means, and means for secur ing the lower ciosure in an open position.
i. A toilet, comprising a pair of communicating receptacles arranged one above the other, a sealing closure for each of said re ceptacies adapted to form a sealed chamber between the closures, and a separate operating means for each of said closures, said operating means being positioned distant from each other to prevent the user of one from using the other and whereby the lower roo e-e11 closure can toe closest to form chamber between the closures and iearii the upper closure free to Toe operated out opening the lower closure,
In Witness whereof, I have hereunto suhscribed. myname in the presence of Witnesses WILLIAh/I E. SCDMERVILLEH Witnesses W. Sorremu L. A, Yonrro.
