To all whom may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES N. MINER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Albion, in the county of Orleans and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Jeweling-Tools, of which the following is a specification.
The object of ny invention is to provide a tool which may be used by watchmaiters for producing tae countersink or setting for jewels in watches with precision and expedition and in other connections where it is desired to cut an opening with great exactness as to dimension.
A further object is to so construct the tool that a measurement of the part to be fitted into the opening can be taken and the opening when out will be exact to this dimension.
A still further object is to so construct the tool that it may be adapted to be a part of the tail-stock of a lathe and the part to be operated upon can thus be held by the chuck of the lathe and revolved adjacent the tool.
\Vith other objects in view, which will be referred to, my invention consists in the peculiar combination and novel arrangement of parts, such as will be hereinafter more fully described in connection with the accompanying drawings and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings :-Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of the tail-stock of a lathe showing my invention applied thereto. Fig. Qis a top plan view of the disclosure in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view through the pedestal of the tail-stock on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Fig. i is an end view of the tail-stock showing the inner end. Fig. 5 is a view from the outer end of the tail-stock. Fig. 6 is a view in side elevation of the upper part of the tail-stock taken from the opposite side to the disclosure in Fig. 1. Fig. 7 is a view similar to Fig. 1 with the upper part of the tailstock in longitudinal vertical section more clearly to illustrate the structure. Fig. 8 is a transverse vertical sectional view on the line S-8 of Fig. 2. Fig. 9 is a similar view on the line 99 of Fig. 2. Fig. 10 is a fragmentary sectional view on the line 1G10 of Fig. 2. Fig. 11 is a view in side elevation of a burnishing point which may be inserted in the tool in the place of the cutting blade and used to secure a jewel in the settlng formed by the tool. The tail-stock 1 is to all intents and purposes of the standard design, it having the tail-stock spindle mounted in a bearing 3 on the upper end thereof to have endwisc sliding movement, and a locking collar is received around the spindle 2 to be tightened thereagainst by the thumb nut 5 to hold this spindle against endwise movement. The clamp 6 is provided to secure the tail-stock adjustab'ly to the bed of the lathe and the clamp lever T is extended through the side of the pedestal to a position to be manually actuated to operate the clamp. A plate 8 has blocks 9 and 10 secured thereto and these blocks have openings therethrough in which the spindle 2 is loosely mounted, the block 10 being split at 11 adjacent the opening in which the spindle 2 is received and a clamp bolt 12 provided to draw this split portion down against the spindle and clamp the spindle end firmly within this block. A gage opening 13 is formed in the upper face of the block 9 to one side of the disposition of the spindle 2 and a gage member 1.4: is received through an opening formed in the block to project into the gage opening 13 and to be adjusted by adjusting nuts 15, the set screw 16 being provided to secure this gage to be stationary when it has beenbrought to the proper adjusted position. an orifice 17 is formed through the opposite side of the block to communicate with the gage opening 13 and a gage member 18 ismounted in this orifice to have endwise sliding movement and to be in alinement with the gage member 14:- A pin 19 is carried by the member 18 to extend downwardly and project through a slot formed through the plate 8, and at its lower end this pin 19 is bifurcated to receive the reduced end of a stock 20 slidably mounted in an orifice 22 provided to extend horizontally in a block 23 secured through the plate 8 immediately be low the disposition of the block 9. A coil spring 944: is received in the orifice 22 behind the stop 20 to normally force this stock to extend from the orifice and a set screw is provided on the block 23 to be set against the stock and hold this stock against endwise movement in the orifice 22.

By exerting pressure'upon the slide bar 27 against the tension of the spring 28, the lever 31 is swung around its pivot 85r'and the gage member 18 is withdrawn fromsuch close proximity to the gage member 14, with the parts in this position, the jewel is placed within the opening 18 and the gage member 18 is permitted to close lightly upon this jewel due to the tension exerted against the slide bar by the spring 28, the stop 20 is at all times in engagement'with' the pin 19 due to the spring pressure exerted by the spring 24: and when the size of a jewel has been determined in the gage the set screw 25 is brought into engagement with this stop 20 tohold the part in the exact measure of the jewel. The piece in which the orifice for the reception of the jewel is to be formed is being revolved by the head of the lathe and by exerting pressure against the knob .39 on c the rear end of the tail-stock spindle 2 this spindle is moved through the bearing 3 and the plate v9 and parts carried thereby are also moved forward to a position that the cutting tool 32 isbrouglit into engagement withthe piece to be cut and the orifice is formed therein to-the exact dimension ofthe jewel as measured between the gage members 14: and 18, which measurement is preserved by the stop :20. A eweling toolfor use in connection With a lathe comprisinga frame plate, bear-m ings carried by said plate and by which the same is swung on the tail-stock spindle of. the lathe, means carried by said plateand hearings to hold a cutting tool to cut an orifice through the exact measured dimension of the jewel, and said holding means and the connecting mechanism thereof so arranged that a burnishing'point may inserted in place of the cutter and by asubsequent adjustment the tool may be used to secure the jewel in said orifice, 7 2 A tool adapted for use inconnectionwith a lathe to cut an orifice to the exact dimension of a member to be fitted in said orifice comprising a frame plate, bearings carried by said frame plate and mounted on the tail-stock of the lathe on either side of the standard supporting the same, means to measure the member carried by one of said bearings, and cutting means fitted in the sec- 0nd bearing to have movement with respect to said bearings, and a connection between said measuring means and said cutting means so arranged that as the measurement is taken the cutting means is adjusted to proper operative relation to cut an orifice to the dimension of the member to be fitted therein.

A tool adapted to be used in connection with a lathe to cut an orifice of the exact dimension of a member to be fitted in said orifice comprising a frame plate, bearings carried by said frame plate to be fitted to the tailstock spindle of the lathe on either side of the standard supporting the same, a
cutting tool mounted upon one of said bearings to be capable of adjusting movement, a gage to take the measurement of the member fitted to the second of said bearings mounted on the tailstock spindle, and means pivoted to said frame plate and connected between said gage and cutting tool in such relation that as the measurement is taken the tool is adjusted to cut to the exact dimension.

A tool adapted for use in connection with a lathe to cut a recess of a size to receive a member to be fitted into the recess comprising a frame plate, a bearing carried at each end of said frame plate which bearings are adapted to be received upon the tailstock spindle of the lathe upon either side of the standard by which the same is supported, a gage fitted to one of said bearings to have the member engaged by parts thereof, a cutting tool carried by said second bearing to be capable of horizontal movement with respect to the center of the tailstock spindle, and means carried by said plate and connected between the gage and cutting tool in such a manner that as the gage is set the cutting tool is moved to a position to cut the orifice of the proper dimension.
A tool adapted to be used in connection with the tailstock of a lathe comprising a frame plate, bearings carried by said plate to be received around the tailstock spindle on either side of the standard supporting the same to hold said plate connected to have movement therewith, a gage mounted in connection with one of said bearings and having gage members to receive the member for which the holding means is to be cut therebetween, a member mounted with respect to said plate to be capable of horizontal adjustment, a cutting tool carried by said member, and means pivotally mounted on said plate and connected between the gage and the movable member to adjust the cutting tool horizontally as the gage is brought to the proper measurement.
6.- A tool adapted to be connected with a tailstock spindle mounted to have endwise movement comprising a frame plate, bearing blocks mounted on each end of said frame plate to be received around the tailstock spindle on either side of the standard supporting the same, a gage carried by one of said bearings and constructed to be capable of adjustment to be set to the proper dimension, a movable member connected with the plate to have side or horizontal movement, a cutting tool carried by said movable member, and a rocking lever pivotally mounted on said plate and connected between the gage and said movable member to bring the cutting tool to the proper position as the gage is adjusted.

A tool adapted to be used in connection with the tailstock of a lathe and connected with the spindle thereof comprising a frame plate, bearings carried near either end of said frame plate to be received around the tailstock spindle on opposite sides of the standard supporting the same, a gage mounted in one of said bearings and provided with a movable gage member to secure the proper measurement, a cutting tool mounted to have movement with respect to the spindle, a rocking lever pivotally mounted on said frame plate and connected between said gage and cutting tool in such relation that as the gage is adjusted the tool is moved to the proper position, and means to secure the cutting tool in its proper adjusted position.

A tool adapted to cut an orifice to fit a member to be received therein comprising a frame plate, bearings by which said frame plate is mounted in the proper operative relation, a gage mounted in one of said bearings to determine the i'neasurement of said member, a cutting tool mounted on said frame plate to be capable of horizontal adjustable movement, and a rocking lever pivotally mounted in its body portion on said frame plate and at the opposite end connected between the gage and cutting tool in such relation that as the gage is adjusted to the measurement of the member the cutting tool is brought to a position to cut the orifice of the proper dimension.

A tool adapted to cut an orifice of a proper dimension to receive a member to be fitted therein comprising a frame plate, bearings carried by said frame plate and by which the same is mounted in the proper operative relation, a gage mountedin one of said bearings and constructed to permit adjustment of the parts thereof to obtain the measurement of'the member, a cuttingtool mounted onsaid frame plate to becapable 'of horizontal.adjustable movement, a rock ing lever pivotally mounted on said frame plate and "at its opposite end connected between the, gage and'cutting tool in such relation'that as the measurement is obtained by the gage the cuttingtoolis moved to the properposition to cut the orifice of the degage in its adjusted position.
