To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, DAVID D. EVANs, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Racine, in-the county of Racine and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Guards for Presses, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing's, which are a part of this specification.
This invention has for its object to provide a guard for punch presses and the like which will cause a fender to move across the space beneath the head of the machine at the beginning of the downward movement thereof and thus brush away the operators hand if it should be in danger of being caught between the dies.
Another object of the invention is to perfect details of construction of such a guard.
With the above and other objects in View the invention consists in the guard for presses as herein claimed and all equivalents.
Referring to the accompanying drawings in which like characters of reference indicate the same parts in the different views: Figure 1 is a front elevation of a portion of a punch press having the guard of this invention applied thereto; Fig. 2 is a side view thereof; Fig. 3 is a sectional plan view thereof; Fig. 4; is a front elevation of a portion of a punch press having a modified. form of guard applied thereto; Fig. 5 is a vertical sectional detail view thereof taken on line 56 of Fig. 4 and on a larger scale; Fig. 6 is a similar detail sectional view looking in the opposite direction; and, Fig. 7 is a detail edge view of the pawl and pin thereof.
In these drawings 10 indicates the head of the press which carries the punch or die 11 and which reciprocates between guides 12, only one of which is shown. Said guides are removably mounted on the frame 13 of the machine. The guard constituting this invention forms an attachment for any form of press, the particular press shown being for convenience of illustration only.
To the head of the press is secured a bracket member 28 having another bracket member 29 adjustably secured thereto, as with the bracket members 14 and 15, and a guard actuating member 30 is adjustably mounted on the bracket 29 by screws 31 passing through slots of the guard actuating member and permitting it to be adjusted horizontally. The guard actuating member 30 carries a roller 33 at its upper end where it is preferably bent to a hook shape to afford support for the roller pin on each side of the roller. An engaging member Set is secured to the arm 21 and is preferably adjustable thereon by means of the connecting screws 35 passing through slots 36 of the engaging member. The engaging member, as shown, is in the form of a plate with its end bent at an angle to a hook shape so that in the upper position of the arm 21, the hook shape portion of the engaging member engages the bottom of the roller 33 with a short horizontal edge in alinement with the pivotal connection 22 for the swinging arm 21. The horizontal engaging edge of member 34 extends for a short distance and meets with an inclined edge down which the roller travels on the downward movement of the press head.
In operation, at the beginning of the downward movement of the press head the engagement of the roller 33 with the horizontal edge of the engaging plate causes the arm 21 to quickly swing downwardly and move the slide 19 through its guides and carry the guard member 27 across the front of the diespace .to remove the opermore hand from danger if occasion requires. The complete throw of theguard is produced with a very short movement of the press head andthe remainder of they movement of the press head may be accomplished withoutafiecting the guard because the swinging movement a of the arm 21 has brought the inclined portion of the engaging member 34k to a verticalposition so that the roller'33 may travel on it without fur ther moving the guard. When the press headrises the spring 24 returns the parts to their normal position ready for the next operation. The adjustability of the securing brackets permits of the device being adapted for use with'different presses and the adjustability .of the guard actuating member and the adjustability of the engagingmember, which'latter is a horizontal adjustment in thenormal position of parts, enables the attachment to be set to produce the operation at the desired time.
In; the modified form shown in Figs. 4, 5, 6 and 7 the slide 19 and its guard member 2'7 are adapted to be quickly moved across the'front of the die space by means of a coiled spring 37 instead of being retrieved by a spring as in the principal form described. This coiled spring 37 is con nected at its upper end to the outer end of the slightly modified engaging member 38 which is pivoted on the stud 22, and the lower end ofthe spring is connected to the depending arm 39 of the semicircular plate 19. The engaging member is connected to thesemicircular slide in the same manner as in the principal form. To provide for swinging the semicircular plate upwardly with the press head the bracket 29 is provided with a hinged spring controlled guard actuating member 40 extending upwardly therefrom. This member has extending inwardly therefrom a pin 41 positioned to engage the lower edge of the engaging member 38 when the press head is traveling upwardly. The actuating member 40 at its upper end is provided with a laterally extending pin 42 which engages a spring actuated dog 43' pivotally connected to the metal strip 20 so that the pin 42 may alternately pass in the front and rear of the dog when moved by the press head. In moving upwardly. the pin 42 passes between the dog and the strip to a position just above and clear of the dog to permit the upper end of the dog to spring back against the strip. In descending the pin will ride over the outer curved edge of the dog and swing the actuating member outwardly sufliciently far to release the pin 4-1 from engagement with the lower edge of the actuating member 38 and'permit the said member and com nected parts to be swung downwardly by the spring 38.
From the foregoing description of the modified form it will be seen that this construction comprises merely a reversal of parts whereby the guard is actuated by the spring instead of being retrieved by a spring as in theprincipal form.
The main object for the construction of the form of the invention illustrated in Figs. 4, 5, 6 and 7 is to effect a quick movement of the guard-with the smallest movement possible of the press head instead of necessitating a material" movement of the press head to complete the movement of the guard as in the other form of construction. \Vith the spring actuated construction the downward movement of the press head to the least extent is sufficient to release the spring actuated guard and permit it to sweep across the diespace of the press and thus protect the operator in cases where the press head is limited to a short movement.
Vhat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A guard for presses, comprising a suitably mounted are shaped slide, a swinging arm having engagement with the slide for moving it, a guard member carried by the slide, and means on the press head for engaging the arm and causing it to move.
2. A guard for presses, comprising a suitably mounted plate, an are shaped slide mounted thereon, a guard member carried by the slide, a swinging arm pivotally mounted on the plate and having engagement with the slide, and means carried by the press head for engaging the arm and causing it to move the slide.
3. A guard for presses, comprising a guard member adapted to move across the space in front of the die of the press, a'tension means for thus moving the guard, a releasing dog mounted on a fixed portion of the press, and a swinging member carried by the press head and provided with means for releasably engaging and retrieving the guard, said swinging member releasing the guard by a downward engagement with the dog.
