To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JoI-rN MUMroRD, a citizen. of the United States, residing at Frankfort, in county of Ross and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wire-Splicers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in wire splicers, and the object is to provide an implement for splicing the ends of two strands of wire to ether by wrapping first one of the wires a out the other wire, and then wrapping the end of the other wire around the first wire.
The invention consists of certain novel features of construction and combination of parts which will be hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of the tool; Fig. 2 is a view in side elevation of the tool; Fig. 3 is a detail transverse vertical sectional view, of a portion of the head and handle, showing the remainder in elevation; Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the head; and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a modified form.
A represents the handle of the tool, which is provided with a bifurcation 1 at one end thereof, forming side members 2 and 3. The side members are provided with an opening 4: in which a rotating head 5 is mounted. This head is preferably made hollow, through which the wire strand is received. An elongated slot 6 is formed in the head, which is adapted to be brought into registry with slots 7 of the side members, so that the wire strand can be inserted in the head. A ratchet wheel 8 is formed on the head, and is received between the side members. The side member 3 is capable of being removed, so that the head canbe inserted between the side members, and after the ratchet wheel is received between the members, the side member 3 is again fastened in position by means of pins or rivets 9. A spring-controlled pawl 10 is mounted between the side members near one end in a position to engage the teeth of the ratchet wheel 8, and the other end is in position to be engaged by the thumb of the operator, so that the ratchet wheel and pawl can be thrown out of engagement when desired. On one end of the head 5 a hook 11 is formed which extends past the elongated slot 6, and is 11766. at its outer en So that it is in registry with the bore of the head, and forms a bearing surface for the head, as it engages the wire strand operated upon, or the wire around which the other wire is wrapped. Openings or sockets 12 are formed, in which the end of the strand to be wrapped is received, so that as the handle is turned, the head will be caused to rotate therewith, as the pawl will hold the ratchet so that it will rotate with the handle. The handle can be turned any distance desired, and instead of making a complete revolution, it can be turned rearwardly or back toward the operator, as the head will be held against rotation by its engagement with the strand which is to be wrapped, and the pawl will travel over the teeth of the ratchet wheel.
l V hen it is desired to place the tool over a wire for the purpose of wrapping an end of longer wire therea'round, the hook 11 will first be placed over the wire, and then the wire strand will be caused to enter the elongated slot in the head which is in registry with the slots in the side members 2 and 3. After the wire has been placed in position, and the wrapped end has been received in one of the hollows or sockets 12, the handle will be rotated, causing the head to travel therewith for wrapping the end of the wire around the strand. During this wrapping operation, the hook 11 engages the strand for holding the strand in the slot 6 of the head and maintains the tool steady and holds it at right angles to the strand upon which it is mounted, so that the end that is being wrapped is always wrapped close, that is, the coil formed on the strand is closely and evenly wound. Of course during this Wrapping operation the two strands of wire to be spliced are generally held together by means of pliers or a clamp, so that the strands will be held rigid, and permit of the tool being rotated about the strand.
I claim:
1. A wire splicer comprising a handle having a slot in the end thereof, a rotatable head mounted therein, provided with a slot adapted to be brought into registry with a slot in the handle through which the wire strand is received, means on the head for rotating the wire about the strand, and a hook on the head extendingbeyond the slot for holding the wire in the slot and engaging the wire for steadying the tool during the wrapping operation,

A Wire splicer comprising a handle having a head With a slot therein for the reception of the Wire strand, said head provided With means for engaging the Wire ends for Wrapping them around the strand, and a hook on the head extending across the slot having its outer end curved so that the curved portion is in registry With the bore of the head, said curved portion conforming 10 to the shape of the strand Which it engages for holding the Wire strand in the slot, and thereby steadying the tool and maintaining it at the proper angle during the Wrapping operation.
