IIILCN'IJII; CAHILL, OF PIQUA, OHIO.
UNION SUIT.
Application filed Tune 21, 1913.
l cla-re the following to be a full, clear, and
exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
rlilhis invention relates to new and useful improvements in nether garments of the knit fabric closed crotch type.
The object of theinvention is to provide a garment of this type which has a flexible closed crotch which allows vthe legs of the garment to be made of the same size, tothe end that the wearer may comfortably dress on either side.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a knitted closed crotch. garment as constructed according to my invention; and Fig. 2l is a plan view of the crotch and flap portions of the garment. Y
Referring more particularh7 to the drawings, 1 and 2 represent overlapping fiap portions of the garment which cross in the manner shown in Fig. 2 and the upper edges 3 of which are united to the rear portion of the body Il of the garment along a seam 5. The flaps 1 and 2are provided with leg eX- tensions 6 forming gussets. The edges 7 of these flaps and gussets are united to the body portion of the garment along seams 8. The edges 9 of said gussets are united to the front of the leg portions 15 along seams 10, whilev the edges 11 of both of the flaps 1 and 2 are united to the lower end of the facing Specification of Letters IPatcnt.
Patented Feb. 23, 1915.
Serial No. 774,980.
12 along the seam 13. Adjacent to the edges 11 and seam 13 of the garment, the fiaps 1 and 2 are united to form the closed crotch. This is accomplished by means of a broad opened end seam consisting of two rows of stitches let which lie parallel with the wales ofthe fabric and unite the flaps at their central portions.y Owing to the absence of cross stitching at the end of this seam, the legs 15 at the crotch may be of the same size and will have a uniform elasticity in stretching, thereby permitting the wearer to dress comfortably on either side, and the crotch to remain closed under alll conditions of wear.
l claim:
A new article of manufacture, comprising a union` suit having two overlapping flap pieces which form the central back portion thereof, and together with the body portion form the seat portion of the garment, the outer longitudinal edges of said fiap pieces and the upper transverse edges being united respectively to the leg and body portions of the garment throughout said longitudinal and transverse edges, the lower inner longitudinal edges of said flap pieces and the lateral edges extending therefrom being united with the leg portions at the inner leg seams, said lateral edges being overlapped and united by two parallel perpendicular lines of stitches and forming the crotch of the garment, and the upper inner' longitudinal edges of said flap pieces being disconnected in the crotch where said parallel lines of stitches terminate to the upper transverse seam which unites said flap pieces to the back body portion of the garment.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
