1 b all whom it may concern Be it known that we, JAMES E. CoLLINs and AUGUSTUS M. CLOUGH, citizens of the United States, and residents of Lisbon, in the county of Grafton and State of New Hampshire, have invented a new and Improved Cabinet, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

Our invention relates particularly to a cabinet especially adapted for containing spices and extracts and designed for use in the kitchen of a household.

An object of the invention is to provide a. form of cabinet and appurtenances that may be largely or wholly formed of metal and in which the various elements will be disposed to have the maximum holding ca.- pacity within a minimum space. n

A further object of the invention is to provide the elements for holding the spices and extracts, so arranged as to afford ready access thereto when required.

Other objects of the invention will appear from the specific description following.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the views, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a cabinet, constructed in accordance with our invention; and Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section on a larger scale.

In forming the cabinet and its appurtenances in accordance with our invention, a casing is provided having a bottom 10. sides 11 and 12, a top 13 and back 14;, which will be more particularly referred to hereinaftcr.

At the bottom of the cabinet, we provide a horizontal series of drawers 15 to hold sugar, soda, baking powder and like materials needed in comparatively large quantities. The drawers will be equipped in practice with handled name plates 16 as is customary in similar devices.

Tn order to provide for holding of a variety of spices and condiments, a cylindrical container 17 is mounted in the casing, being disposed horizontally therein adjacent to and below the top 18. so as to project its rounding front forwardly beyond the said top. being advantageously employed a lower in clined fastening member 18 and an upper inclined supporting member 19 the upper member 19 extending downwardly and forwardly from the top 13 to a connection with the cylinder, and the lower inclined member 18 extending upwardly and forwardly from a. shelf 23 above the drawers 15 to a connection with the container. The upper portion of the container is open and is commanded by a movable closure 20, shown here as hinged as at 21, so as to be swung in the vertical plane, said closure being provided at its lower edge with a suitable handle 20 and equipped with various name plates 20. In practice the cylinder is partitioned to provide a suitable number of compartments. The cover is normally maintained in a closed position by retractile springs 22 connected with said closure and with the ends of the container 17.

The support of the container 17 is such that it overhangs above the shelf or horizontal support 23, leaving a free space heneath said container, the space being open at the front. A tray 24 is thus adapted to be received beneath the container and easing on the shelf 23, the tray being adapted to hold knives, forks, spoons and the like. It will be observed that the lower inclined member 18 in addition to bracing and sustaining the cylindrical container forms as well a stop limiting the inward movement of the tray 24 beneath the container. In order to close the front of the space between the container and the shelf 23, a closure 25 is provided, hinged at its lower edge to the shelf 23, as at 26 and adapted to assume when closed, an inclined position, the upper edge bearing against the front of the container 17 at the under side. The closure is provided with a suitable handle 27.

As will be seen from Fig. 2, the shelf 23 terminates short of the back 14- and the latter is provided with a forwardly projecting shelf 28, which advantageously is in line with the shelf 23. The back 14 is fitted to slide transversely in guide grooves 29, 30 at the bottom and top of the casing and the shelf 28 is adapted to support a series of bottles, containing various extracts, such as vanilla, lemon, etc., the bottles being clearly shown in the drawings. By the described arrangement, a large number of bottles may be disposed in upright position and accommodated in the small space at the back of the container 17, the bottles being readily accessible by sliding the back 14; outwardly in its guide grooves. On the other hand when the sliding back is in the closed position, the various extract bottles are concealed and protected. A guard 31 is provided to hold the bottles on the shelves, the guard being in the form of a rod extending horizontally in front of the bottles, suitably spaced above the shelf 28. The side 12 of the cabinet is cut away at the rear as at 12 and a side element 143 is carried by the back Ll andextends forwardly, being of size and form. to constitute a closure of the cut away portion 12. A knob or handle 32 is provided on the side section 14: to be grasped in sliding the back 14. Also at the top of the cabinet there may be provided suitable eyes or other hangers 33, so the cabinet may be hung on nails or the like on the wall.

The described construction, it will be clearly seen, involves a minimum amount of material and yet provides a maximum capacity in minimum total space. At the same time all the articles held by the cabinet are most conveniently accessible and when not in use, are well protected.

Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A cabinet of the character described, comprising a casing, a container supported in fixed position at the front of the casing, and a back for the casing, the said back being slidable transversely and provided with a shelf extending forwardly at the interior of the back.

2. A cabinet of the character described having a shelf between the top and bottom, a fixed container above the shelf, and a sliding back, the shelf terminating short of the said back and the back having a forwardly projecting shelf member approximately in line with the first-mentioned shelf.
