i o nl whom may manera Re it mann that. l, Saran-nn E. Fmnn, en oie the United States. residing at oh, connty of Norfolk, State of Massaehusetts,'have invented'a certain new and' llmprovement olding Boxes or pingLases, which the following is specification, reference being had 'therein 4he accompanying drawings. @ne invention relates to an improvement in olding or knock 'down metallic boxes to as shipping cases in which the. goods niav be, peclredor shipping and which can roldfed, into small compass to be returned to the shipper to be again used.
The present invention is an improvement npon'the' invention of Patent No. 941,013 to.
1l/tlieaton, dated November 28,
lig/llt? 'and also an improvement upon the i said application of Doble and Field above referredto, the panels are each formed-with an inner and an' 'outer wall spaced apart trom each other strengthening 'plates in the space between the is found t cr many purposes a box or shipping ease capable 'of being folded in' substantially the same'man patent and apner as the boxes of vthe said plication above referred to may be made of sntcient strength even if a portion or all-of panels have only one thickness, provided it is' properly reinforced instead of having the two walls. Bv this new ornrof con struction the shipping case' is lighter in weight and less` expensive of construction. lin the preferred' form o'constructlon, however, is'better to have at least two of the panels termed with the inner' and outer platea epeesd apart from each othermasfor donble er i913, No. 752,593.
and having corrugated instaneetlie two, ende, es the donbling'ot end walls adds largely to the stiening of but l' prefer to make the parts be' ci either" ferm., is, 'of either the the single wall and interchangeable,
parte either the single or the donble-panels be used, as desired.
For purpose of illustration'the box shown in the drawings and'described in the'specification is one in have double walls have single walls.
The invention will be fully understood from the following` description taken in connection with' thev accompanying drawings, and the novel features thereof will be fully described in .the claims at the close of andthe remaining panels the specification.
ln the drawings,-ligure`l isa top plan oi a boX embodying is an elevation of the `left-hand end of the box shownin Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a 'section on line 3 3 of Fig. Epartly-broken away. Fig. 4l is a section online 4-4 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is a section on line 5 5 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 6 'is an enlarged ,elevation of a portion of the left-hand upper portion of the box shown in 'F ig..1 looking from the front.
For convenience ci designation the six' sides or .panels of the box will be referred to respectively as the front, the back, the two ends, the cover and the bottorm- Referring now to the drawings, the six panels referred to are the front A, the back E, the left and right hand ends C and D respectively, the cover E, and' the bottom F. The front A is .hinged to the bottom F and to the ends C and D, and the 'top .E is
hinged to the back-B. The front A has a' separable connection with' the top E, and the back B has a separable connection with the bottom F. l
By removing the locking pin betweenthe 'top or cover E and the front A the cover can be turned bach so as to open the box, and by also pulling' out the lockingv pin between the lower .edge of the back and the rear edge of the bottom and folding the-top sneh a manner said end panels may' so that in assembling' the which thetwo end panels the. invention. The hinge pins 3 and 8 are connected Vtogether at the spaces between the knuckles by links 9 Whichl are in the form of a double barrel sleeve, the tivo barrels of the sleeve being connectedto-` gether by a neck portion, one barrel lof the sleevebeing adapted for the passage of the pin 6 andthe other barrel ofthe sleeve being adapted to receive the pin 8.
pins pass loosely through these sleeves so that the links -Ina-y be. turned oneither one j ofthe pins'6, 8; rI`he knuckles-'5 are formed integral withv the panel A which has portions c ut out o'one edge, thereby forming `spacings between the knuckles to receive the links 9 and leaving projecting portions alternating with said spaces which lare curled to form the knuckles 5 and have ilat uend the outer face of thepanel A or otherwise properly-secured to the outer portions 1 0 which are turned up flat against face of the front A, as shown in Fig. l.
The knuckles 7 connected with the bottom F are integral with a platell Whose front edge has cut out spaces also corresponding with the spaces between tle knuckles, the projecting portions of the front edge being curledto form the knuckles 7, While' the body or shank portion of the plate l1 is preferably bent around into box shape, as

The knuckles 26-are preferably formed integral with the front panel A ina similar manner to that in which the knuckles were formed i on thelower edge' and terminate in the Hat portions 261 lying against the outer face of the panel and secured thereto.
On account of the offset tionof the top and bottom panels there is a recessl formed in the inner face of both the top and bottoni panels extending from front to rear along both the left andright hand ends; In order tofill up these recesses l provide channel plates' 13 suitably bent to till these spaces and' Welded to the faces 'of the panels. l
