To all whom it may concern:
- Be it known that 'we, CLEMENT L. SHOGK- LEY and HARVILA E. STRALnv,-citizens of the United States, residing at Springfield, in the county of Clarkand State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Priming Apparatus for Internal-Combustion- Engines, of which the following is a specification.'- I This invention relates to prlming apparatus for internal combustion engines, the object in view being to produce simple pr1m ingapparatus which is applicable to any multiple cylinder internalcombustion en gine, whereby liquid fuel such as 'gasolene or other hydrocarbon may be forced equally to the combustion chambers. of-all the cylinders for the purpose of facilitating and insuring the prompt starting of the engine upon the turningover of the crank shaft.
With the above and other objects in view,- the invention consists in the novel construe tion, combination and arrangement of parts, as will hereinafter be; more fully described, illustrated and claimed. i
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a-side elevation of a multiple cylinder internal combustion engine which is conventionally illustrated, showing the present inthrough which a reciprocatory piston rod 5 vention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section through the pump-barrel of the cylinder on.an enlarged scale. Flg.
3 is a similar view-of the fuel intake manifold of the pump cylinder or barrel. Fig. 4 is a cross section through the pump barrel and manifold in'line with the check valves and one of the priming line pipes. Fig. 5 is a detail view of one of the intermediate abutments of the pump cylinder. r 1
The apparatus contemplated in this invention comprises essentlally a pump barrel or cylinder 1, one end of which permanently closed by a head 2 shown 1n the form of, a solid plug screwed therein while in the oppos te end of the barrel 1 is screwed a plug 3 having a central opening 4 therein ing formed with circular recesses 7 in their inner adjacent faces, into which recesses is inserted like material, the packing washer 8 and the members 6 of the abutment formed with central openings 9 an'dlO to receive the piston rod 5 and permit the same to'work back and forth through the same. In each of the pump chambers 11 formed by and between the abutments A is a pump piston 12, all of said pistons being mounted on the same rod 5 so that they are equally and simultaneously reciprocated back and forth thereby. Extending along one side of the barrel or cylinder 1 is a fuel intake'manifold 13 which is practically coextensive in length with the pump barrel and which is provided with a number of. outlet ports 14, there being one of such ports for gine. One end of the manifold 13 is left open to provide an inlet orifice 17 to which is connected one end of a fuel supply pipe 18 which, in the pre ferred embodiment of the invention extends to and connects at 19 to the fuel feed pipe 20 which 4 leads from the supply tank (not shown) to the carburetor designated at 21. valve 22 being operated by means of a man-' ually controlled stem 24 which leads through anopening in the opposite end of the manifold 13 said stem 24 being preferably made of suflicient length to extend rear.-
