Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J an. 26, I915.
Application filed September 2, 1914. Serial No. 859,830.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LAN J. MATTINGLY, a citizen of the United States, residing at I-Iardinsburg, in the county of Breckenridge and State of Kentucky, have invented new and useful Improvements in Buggy-Pole Stay-Chains, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to doubletree stays or connectors and has for its object the provision of simple and eiiicient means for obviating the disadvantages occurring from the use of leather straps, chains, and like devices.
It has been found in practice that While chains are very effective for the purpose, they are extremely noisy and owing to their extreme flexibility, wear almost as fast as leather straps which are the ideal connec tions and which Wear comparatively fast and are therefore expensive.
The present connector embodies all of the durable features of the chain and of the flexible features of the leather strap, with greater wearing qualities than either and can be constructed equally as cheap.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a top plan view showing the manner of applying the device to the circle and doubletree. Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof of the parts broken away. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of one end of one form of the connector.- Fig. l is a detail perspective view of one end of another form of the connector.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, 1 represents an ordinary vehicle pole which is attached to the circle 2 by means of the brace bars 3 and carrying the usual doubletree 4: to which are connected the swingletrees 5 by the clevis 6. lhe connectors are generally indicated at 7 and in the form shown in Fig. 3 are so constructed as to connect with the circle and with the clevis 6, while in the form shown in Fig. i, they are adapted to connect with the circle and the bar of the doubletree. In each form, the connectors comprise a plurality of links 8 connected by hinges 9 and in the form shown in Fig. 3, one terminal is provided with an aperture 10 for receiving a bolt to connect it with the circle, while the opposite terminal link is twisted at right angles and formed into an eye 11 for engagement around the clevis. The form of the connector shown in Fig. 4 has both terminal links provided with apertures 12 to receive a bolt on the circle and the bolt securing the clevis to the doubletree. These connectors are preferably made somewhat longer than the distance between the circle and the end of the doubletree so that they hang downwardly in the center and permit limited iQCiVGIIlGIll) of the doubletree upon its pivotal What is claimed is:
A. stay chain for vehicle double trees comprising a plurality of rigid metallic links hingedly connected together, said links being arranged for vertical flexibility and horizontal inflexibility, and means for attaching the terminals of said chain to the double tree and circle bar or vehicle, respectively.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
