iii say:
TEODOR WYSZYWANIUK, OF CHESTER, PENNSYLVANIA.
SLIDING-J AW WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
' Patented Jan. is, 1915..
Application filed October 26, 1914. Serial No. 868,670.
To all whom it mai concern:
Be it known that I, Tnonon vVyszYwANiuk, a subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, residing at Chester, in the county of Delaware and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sliding-Jaw renches, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to quick-acting wrenches, of the sliding jaw type, and has for its object to provide a'wrench of such class, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, to enable the quick adjustment of a sliding jaw and for further maintaining the jaw in its adjusted position.
Further objects of the invention are to provide a sliding jaw wrench which is simple in its construction and arrangement, strong, durable, etiicient and convenient in its use, readily set up and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
With the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists of a novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter more specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to which come within the scope of the claims hereunto appended.
In the drawings wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several views: Figure 1 is a side elevation of a sliding jaw wrench in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is an elevation with the movable jaw in section.
Referring to the drawings in detail 1 denotes the handle of a wrench and which has formed integral therewith, at one end thereof, a shank 2, which is rectangular in cross section and has its forward edge toothed as at 3. The outer end of the shank 2 has a rigid jaw 4 integral therewith.
Slidably mounted upon the shank 2 is a jaw member consisting of a pair of side plates 4, 5, and aback plate 6 which is integral with the rear ends of the side plates 4, 5, and a curved front plate 7, which eXtends from the inner edge 8 of the side plates 4, 5, and terminates at a point inwardly with respect to the forward edges 10 of the side plates 4, 5, a seat 11.
The side plates 4, 5, have the front plate 7 formed integral therewith and are also connected together by a pair of shafts l2, 13, arranged forward with respect to the toothed edge 3 of the shank 2. The shaft 12 is positioned nearer to the toothed edge 8 than the shaft 13.
.Rotatably mounted upon the shaft 12 is a pinion 14 which engages with the toothed edge 3 of the shank 2 and pivotally mounted upon the shaft 13 and normally resting upon the shoulder 11 is a top plate 15 of the jaw member and said plate 15 when positioned upon the seat 11, has its forward face 16, which constitutes the gripping face of the jaw member, flush with the edges 10 of the side plates 4, 5. The top plate 15 has an inwardly extending nose 17, which is adapted to engage the pinion 14, to arrest rotation thereof, when the top plate 15 is in the position shown in Fig. 2, thereby retaining the sliding jaw member in the position to which it has been adjusted. The back plate 6 of the jaw member, has fixedly secured thereto, by the hold fast devices 18, a rearwardly extending shifting arm for the said jaw member.
The wrench is operated by means of the shifting arm 19, which when the handle is gripped may be actuated to move the sliding jaw member to and from the rigid jaw 4, the slidable jaw being locked in adjusted position upon pressure upon the top plate 15 by the element to be operated upon, whereby the nose 17 engages the pinion and arrests rotation thereof.
What I claim 1. A sliding jaw wrench including a toothed shank having a jaw fixed to one end thereof, a sliding jaw member mounted upon the shank and provided with a rotatable pinion engaging with the teeth of the shank and further including a pivoted top plate constituting the gripping face of said jaw when said plate is shifted parallel to said rigid jaw, said top plate further provided with an inwardly extending nose engaging in said pinion to arrest shifting of said jaw member when said plate is shifted to extend parallel to said fixed jaw.
2. A sliding jaw wrench including a toothed shank having a jaw fixed to one end thereof, a sliding jaw member mounted thereby providing upon the shank and provided with a rotatable pinion engaging with the teeth of the shank and further including a pivoted top plate constituting the gripping face of said jaw when said plate is shifted parallel to said rigid jaw, said top plate further pro vided with an inwardly extending nose engaging in said pinion to arrest shifting of said jaw member when said plate is shifted to extend parallel to said fixed jaw, said Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing jaw member further including a shoulder constituting a seat for said top plate when the latter is shifted to extend parallel with said fixed jaw.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature the Commissioner of Patents.
