IP11 ocnss or MANUFACTURING A DRAFT-YOKE non RAILWAY-CAR DRAFT-RIGGING a Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 19, 191
Application filed June 7, 1913. Serial No. 772,218.
To illlwhom it may concern Be it known that I, OLIVER C. CnoMwnLL,
a citiz'enof the United States, residing at Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Processes of Manufacturing a.
Draft Yoke for Railway Car Draft Rigging, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming apart of this specification.
My invention relates to a process of manu- The object of my invention is to provide a cheap and easy process of manufacturing a draft yoke. a
Inthe drawings forming a part'of this specification, Figures 1' and 1 are perspective views 'ofbillets of yoke material.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of same,
in which Fig. 1 is forged down to a bar and Fig. 1 upset with enlarged ends. 3 is a perspective view showing the ends fornied into T-heads. Fig. 4 is a perspective view showing the T-heads formed into U-shaped members. Fig. 5 is a perspective view showing the bar bent to form a yoke. Fig. 6 is a perspective view showing the limbs of the yoke in parallel arrangement, 1 and the U-shaped' ends in position for joining them together. Fig. 7, is a, perspective view showing the U-shaped members joined into one piece. Fig. Sis a perspective view showing the completed draft yoke with lateral slots to receive the coupler key.
. Referring to the drawings, 9 and 9 illustrate the billets of material. With the exception of the ends .of the billet 9 the same is drawn preferably by forging to a bar comprising the strap 10-and having enlarged portion 11, or the billet, 9- has the metal gathered at'the ends, producing the strap 10, and having enlarged portion 11 at ends, as illustrated in- Fig. 2. The enlarged ends 11 are then flattened into-.I- heads 12, 12, the outer edges 13,- 13 of the same being concaved, as illustrated in Fig. 3. The edges of the T-heads are then folded into U-shaped members 14, v14, as illustrated in Fig. 4 of the drawings, and the bar 10 is then bent near its middle portion, \the U=shaped mem bers at either end being folded toward each other, forming the upright member 15 of a draft yoke. andthe limbs 16, 16, as illustrated in Fig. 5 of the drawings. The iiin'os 16, 16 are-then brought to a substantially parallel position, each side of one U-shaped member 14 engaging a side of the other U-shaped member 14, as illustrated in Fig. 6 of the drawings, the U-shaped members being in position to be joined together by forging or welding. The U-shaped members are then joined together to form the hollow yoke head 17, illustrated in Fig. 7 of the drawings. The yoke head is then provided with slots-1'8, 18 for the reception of a coupler key, thus forming the completed draft yoke illustrated in Fig. 8 of the drawings.
I claim 1. A process of manufacturing a draft yoke comprising the drawing of a billet into a bar having enlarged ends, then flattened each end into a T head, folding said T heads into a U-shape, then bending said bar into a U-shape with the U-shaped members at either end thereof engaging each other, then joining said. U-.shaped members together forming a hollow yoke head.
2. A process of manufacturing a draft yoke comprising the drawing of a billet into a bar having enlarged ends, then flat- .tening' each end into a T-head, folding said at either end thereof engaging each other,
then .joining said U-shaped members together forming a' hollow yoke head.
\Vitnesses i CLEVELAND. R. BEALMEAR, M. ,GOLDBERG.
I OLIVER O. CROMVVELL.
' It is hereby certified that in Letters PatentNo. 1,125,665, granted January 19, 1915, upon the application of Oliver (3. Cromwell, of Baltimore, Maryland, for an improvement in Processes of Manufacturing a Draft-Yokefor' RailwayrCar Draft Rigging, an error appears in the .printed specification requiring correction as follows: Line 74, for the word flattened read flattening; andthat the said Letters Patent should be read with this correction therein that the same may conform to the record of the case in the Patent Ofiice.
Signed and sealed this 9th day of February, A. D., 1915.
