FAUCET.
Y ing is a specification, andwhich are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a partthereof.
The invention relates to faucets for washstands, especially such as are commonly used in sleeping cars- The object of the invention is to provide improved means for opening the faucet by means of a plunger projecting through the table of the wash-stand, whereby the faucet may be opened with less physical effort than has heretofore been required in devices of this type.
The invention consists in a structure such as illustrated in the accompanying draw-y ings, in which- Figure l is a detail plan view of a washstand, the faucet connections being shown mainly in dotted lines; and Fig. 2 is a de'- tail vertical section through the valve casing of the faucet.
The table of the wash-stand is represented at l0, and its bowl at 11, the dischargeaperture of the faucet being covered by a hood 1-2.
The water pipe is shown at 13 and rises below the Wash-stand as usual, entering a valve casing' 14. The valve 15 faces upwardly and closes against a seat 16 Within the casing, and is held thereto by means of a.' spring 17 and by the pressure of the water. The valve stem 18 projects upwardly through the usual stuiing box 19.
The usual practice has been to have this stem extended through the table of the washstand, and to be provided at its upper end with a push button or plunger to which Specioation of Letton Intent.

I the thumb isapplied for unseating the valve.
In order `toopen the valve it is necessary to exert suiciet-`force` to overcome not only the pressure of the spring but the pressure of the water. Frequently the environment of the washstand is s uch that the plunger is located below some appurtenance of the car, such as a water tank, and the diiculty in opening the valve is thus increased.
In the construction as shown the valve stem 18 terminates belowY the topV plate of the washstand, and there is provided a lever 20, pivoted at 21 to thelowcr plate 22 of the washstand table and .bearing downwardly upoxr the valve stem. The plu'nger 23, to
which the thumb pressure is applied, is
mounted within asuitable casing 24 on. the upper plate of the washstand table, and is provided with a stem 25 which extends through this plate and bears upon the free end of the lever 20. The lever is so proportioned that but slight pressure is required on the plunger to depress it and open the valve. A pipe 26 leads from the upper portion of the valve casing 14 to the basin discharging :1er the hood 12. I claim as my invention- The combination "ith a washstand having an upper and lower plate, a water pipe, a valve casing to which the water pipe 4delivers and which is provided with an upwardly seating valve, a valve stem projecting through the lower plate of the washstand, a lever pivotally mounted between the Nans' KROHN.
