Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J it, 1915.
To all whom it may, concern:
Be it known that l, CLARENCE HENRY Cnatrenns, a citizen of the United States, residing in Brooklyn, county of Kings, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Envelops; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the in vention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appeitains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to envelops which are intended to be sent through the mails unsealed, carrying circulars or the like; and its object is to provide such an envelop which may be conveniently and fully opened for inspection, but which nevertheless securely retains its contents until so opened.
It is also an object of the invention to provide an envelop of this kind which has the appearance, the manner of handling and the fully gummed sealing flap of envelops intended for first-class mail matter.
In the accompanying drawing, in which is shown an illustrative embodiment of the invention, and in which the same reference numerals refer to similar parts in the several figures, Figure 1 is a plan view of the blank from which the envelop is formed, and Fig. 2 is a plan view of a partly folded envelop.
Referring to the drawing, the blank from which the envelop is formed consists of a body portion 1, a bottom flap 2, end flaps 3 and 4, and a sealing flap 5, the bottom flap being, provided with a slit 6, for a purpose hereinafter described.
The free end 7 of one of the end flaps, as 3, is preferably shaped to form a tongue, and, in the illustrative embodiment of the invention shown, the other end flap 4 is provided with an adhesive, although it will of course be understood that the adhesive could be placed on the upper surface o1 the end flap 3 instead of on the under surface of the end flap 4 without in any way departing from the spirit of the invention. The sealing flap 5 is provided with an adhesive which may extend throughout the entire length thereof, if desired.
In forming: the envelop, the bottom flap 2 is first folded down upon the body portion 1, after which the end flap 3 is folded down upon the body portion and upon the bottom ilap, the free end 7 of the end fiap being passed through the slit 6 in the bottom ilap, whereby these two flaps are interlocked. The other end iiap l is then folded down upon the end flap 3 and is permanently connected thereto by means of the adhesive, the free end of the flap 3 extending beyond the point of connection and beneath the end flap 4.
When the mailing matter is inserted in the envelop, the sealing flap is folded down upon the end flaps and sealed thereto by means of the adhesive.
If inspection of the contents of the sealed envelop is desired, it is merely necessary to insert the fingers in the envelop at the lower edge thereof, between the bottom flap 2 and the permanently connected end flaps 3 and l, and then raise the end flaps from the bottom tlap, therebv causing the withdrawal of the free end 7 of the end flap 3 from the slit 6, and then withdraw the bottom flap.
What I claim is: p
1. An envelop having, a body portion, end flaps secured to one another, bottom flap extending" between said bodv portion and said end flaps and detachablv secured to one of said end flaps. and a sealing flap.
2. An envelop having a body portion, end fiapssecured to one another. a bottom flap extend ng between said bodv port on and said end flaps. said bottom flap and one of said end flaps being provided with (re-acting interlocking means whereby said bottom flap is detachablv secured to said one of said end flaps, and a sealing flap.
3. An envelop having a bodv po tion, an end flap. a second end flap overlapping said first-m nt oned end flan and secured thereto, said first-mentioned end flap h ving a tree port on, a bottom flap erntendine between said bodv portion and said end flaps and having a s it through which the free portion 0t said fi stmentionecl end flap extends. and a sealing flap.
4. An envelop having a bodv portion, an end flap. a. second end fiap overlap ing said first-mentioned end flap and secured thereto, said first-mentioned end flan having a tree portion lving beneath said second -mentioned end flan. a bottom flap extendin between sa d bodv ortion and said end flaps and having a s t through which the tree portion of said first-mentioned end flap extends, and a sealing flap.
In testimony whereof I affii my signa- 5. An envelop having a body portion, an
ture, in presence oi two Witnesses.
end flap, a second end flap overlapping said first-mentioned end flap and secured there-- to, said first-mentioned end flap being provided With a tongue, a bottom flap extending between said body portion and said end flaps and having a slit through which said tongue extends, and a sealing flap.
