Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RAMON REY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tampa, in the county of Hillsboro and State of Florida, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cigar-Cases; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to paper packages adapted for general use, but especially adapted as cigar cases or containers for cigars and like articles, and has for its object to provide a container which will maintain the contents substantially air tight, while at the same time affording a ready means of access to the contents and also enabling the user to see the contents through the transparent walls of the containers.
A further object is toproduce a package which will be more eificient in action, simpler in construction and comparatively less expensive to produce than those heretofore produced.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel details of construction and combinations of parts, more fully hereinafter disclosed and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification in which like numerals designate like parts in all the views Figure 1 is a perspective view of a preferred form of apackage made in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 is a plan view of a blank employed in the construction of the package shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a plan view of a blank for forming the cells employed in my package; Fig. 4 is a perspective view partly in section of the package shown in Fig. 1 when opened out; Fig. 5 is a sectional view of the construction shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 6 is a perspective view of a modified form of my invention; Fig. 7 is a sectional view of the construction shown in Fig. 6; Fig. 8 is a perspective view of a still further modified form of my invention; Fig. 9 is a sectional View of the construction shown in Fig. 8; Fig. 10 is a perspective view of another modified form of my invention; Fig. 11 is a sectional View of the construction shown in Fig. 10; and Fig. 12 is a perspective view partly broken away of still another modified form of my invention.
Referring first to Figs. 1 to 5, the blank forming the main body portion of my invention is composed of two parts, numbered 1 and 2 joined by a bottom or closing member 3 and provided with scored lines 4, 5 and 6 forming the walls 7 and the flaps 8 and 9, all as will be clear from Fig. 2. The connecting or bottom member 3 is further provided with the scored lines 10 providing the triangular shaped members 11, and the main body portions 1 and 2 of the blank are. further preferably provided with the slits or openings l2v as shown. Attached to each body portion 1 and 2 of the blank shown in Fig. 2 are a plurality of cells 13 preferably formed from the blank 14 such as is shown in Fig. 3. The said blank 14 is provided with the scored lines 15, 16, 17, 18 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, 29, 30, 31, and 320 forming the walls 32, 33, 34, 35, 36, 37, 38, 39, and 40, and the flaps 41 and 42. The said scored lines also form the walls 43, 44, 45, 46, 47, 48, 49, and 50, as will be clear from the drawings. The blank 14 shown in Fig. 3 is next folded into the shape shown in Fig. 4, and the cells 13 thus formed are secured to a'member such as 1 of the blank shown in Fig. 2, while another blank the same as, or similar to that shown in Fig. 2 is also folded into the form shown in Fig. 4, and suitably secured to the member 2 of the blank shown in Fig. 2, thus forming the body of the package shown in Figs. 1 to 5 inclusive. In order that the individual cells 13 may be closed substantially air tight after the cigars are placed therein I preferably provide the walls 33, 36 and 39 with the integral closing flaps as illustrated, and fold the same over the outer ends of the said cells 13 as clearly shown in Fig. 1. Each of the flaps 55 is provided with tongues or depending portions 56 adapted to fold down and paste over the outer walls of the package, as illustrated in Fig. 1. The inner ends 58 of the cells, as will be clear from Fi.g,4 are open or exposed when the package is opened out, so that cigars may be readily extracted therefrom, notwithstanding the outer ends of said cells may remain closed by the flaps 55 as will be clear from Figs. 1 and 4:. On the other hand, while the package is in its closed position as shown in Fig. 1 the bottom or closing member 3 closes the inner ends of both sets of cells 13, and thereby tends to maintain the package air tight. This action is assisted by means of the triangular members 11 which fold up at right angles to the bottom member 3, on the scored line 10 and inside the flaps 8 and 9, as will be clear from Fig. 4. The triangular members 11 are separated from the side flaps 9 by means of the slit as shown in Fig. 2.
Although the walls of my package may be opaque if desired, yet I preferably pro vide the openings 12 above mentioned, and close the same by transparent material such as 61, in order that the contents of the cells may be viewed at any time.
Coming now to the modified form of my invention shown in Fig. 6, the construction is or may be substantially the same as that just disclosed, but I prefer to omit the flaps 8 and 9 from the blank shown in Fig. 2 as well as the triangular closing members 11, so that one member such as 1 of the blank shown in Fig. 2 is provided with say three cells 13 and the other member 2 of the blank shown in Fig. 2 is provided with only two cells 13 fitting in between the spaces of the first mentioned three cells, all as will be clear from Fig. 7 of the drawings. In this particular form of the invention the outer pair of cells 13, shown in Fig. 7 serve to protect, so to speak, the inner two cells and therefore the flaps 8 and 9 are rendered unnecessary in this particular modified form of my invention. The closures of the cells are or may be of the same construction as those shown in Figs. 1 to 5.
Coming now to the modified form of my invention disclosed in Fig. 8, it is or may be of substantially the same construction as that shown in Figs. 6 and 7, except the closure in this said modified form of my package is preferably made in a single piece, which piece may be integral with the blank 2 or it may be made separate there from and pasted thereon. A still further difference between the form shown in Fig. 8 and that shown in Fig. 6 resides in the fact that only three cells 13 fitted to the member 1 of a blank shown in Fig. 2 are provided, while the spaces 66 between said cells 13 are left vacant. In other words, the member corresponding to the portion 2 of the blank shown in Fig. 2 is present in Figs. 8 and 9, but the bottom member 3 shown in Fig. 2 is deprived of its triangular members 11. The said member 2 is also deprived of its cells which would otherwise have been pasted thereto so that only three cells 13 appear in Figs. 8 and 9, and the member 2 of the former blank acts as a mere closure, so to speak, for the spaces 66, thus enabling the said spaces 66 to be utilized as cells, as well as the regular cells 13. The integral closure 65 which covers all of the cells 13 and 66 serves to give access to the package, while when the package is opened out into the form shown in Fig. 4 both ends of the cells 13 will be open as will be clear from. Figs. 4, 8 and 9.
The modified form shown in Figs. 10 and 11 is similar to the construction shown in Figs. 8 and 9, in that the member 2 of the blank shown in Fig. 2 does not carry any cells, nor does the closing member 3 of said Fig. 2 carry the triangular members 11. But, the said member 2 of Figs. 2, 8 and 9 is deprived of its flaps 8 as is the case in the construction shown in Figs. 6 and 7, and in this last mentioned particular the form shown in Figs. 10 and 11 further resembles the form shown in Figs. 6 and 7. The member 2 shown in Figs. 10 and 11 further resembles the construction of Figs. 6 and 7 in that it is provided with the individual closing flaps 55 as is the case in Figs. 1, 6 and 7. Otherwise the construction is the same as in the previous figures.
Coming now to Fig. 12 the member 100 of the blank is formed as in Fig. 2 with its flap 9 omitted as well as its flap 8 and wall 7. In place of flap 8 and wall 7 the member 100 is provided with a connecting member 70 joining a member 200 which is further deprived of its flaps 8 and 9 and wall 7 shown attached to the member 2 in Fig. 2. In place of the said flaps 8 and 9 and wall 7 shown in Fig. 2 the member 200 shown in Fig. .12 is provided with the flap 71. The cells 13 in Fig. 12 are or may be formed of a. blank as shown in Fig. 3, which blank is pasted to the member 100 for example, but the said blank is further provided with the integral flaps 72 attached to the walls 13, and 50 of the said blank shown in Fig. 3. The said blank 100 is further provided at one end with the closing flap 7 5 having the sealing flap 76, and the said blank 100 is likewise provided with the individual closing flaps 55 as illustrated. The blank 200 is provided with the individual closing flaps 55, but does not have at its other end any closing flap such as 75. In the completed construction the package may be opened out as indicated in Fig. 12 so that one end of all the cells will be open for the extraction of cigars, while the other ends may be individually sealed by means of the flaps 55.
It will thus be seen that in all the forms I provide a package for cigars which is fiat in form and therefore easily carried in the pocket, it can be tightly sealed at its outer ends to exclude the air while when opened out the inner open ends of its cells are readily accessible for the extraction of the cigars. This package is further made in two parts hinged together, and a member such as 3 in Figs. 1 to 11 closes the open ends of the cells, while a member such as performs the same function in F ig: 12.
Of course, it is not material whether there is more than one cell on each member 1 and 2 of the blank. or not, but I prefer to place more than one on each member in most cases. A convenient package however, can be made by providing each member 1 and 2 with a single cell.
In my copending application No. 813,711 filed January 22, 1914, entitled Cigar containers I have disclosed and claimed a construction somewhat similar to that disclosed and claimed in this application, but with the following important differences: In my copending application above, the blank corresponding to the blank 1, 2 in this case is scored or provided with weakened lines be tween the transparent slits lettered 12 in this application which enable the individual cells to be folded or nested against each other and thereby form a round or polygonal shaped prism, while in this case the package is fiat and easily carried in the pocket. Further, this provision of these weakened lines, and folding of the cells to form a prism of a roundlike form, necessitates a similar shape for the combined hinge and closure which in this application is lettered 3 and is of a rectangular form. The round form of this combined hinge and closure, in my application above, further prevents the employment of the air closing flaps 11 employed in this application and necessitates other means to serve in their stead. Again the two sets of cells are offset or staggered in this application which is not the case in my said copending application. It should be observed that my cells are not only located in staggered relation to each other, but they are substantially triangular in cross-section, so that the projecting angles of one set of cells may reach beyond the other set of cells, and contact with the opposite wall of the casing. It thus results that the completed package is .of substantially the same thickness as is the depth of a single cell, all as will be clear from Figs. 1 and 5.
It is obvious that those skilled in the art may vary the details of construction as well as the arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of my invention and therefore I do not wish to be limited to the above disclosure except as may be required by the claims.
What I claim is 1. In a multi-cellular flat container the combination of a pair of walls; a pair of sets of open ended cells, substantially triangular in cross section secured to said walls in a staggered relation to each other; individual means for closing one end of each cell and integral with said walls; a single means integral with and constituting a hinge be-- tween said walls for closing the other end of all of said cells; side flaps integral with each side of said walls to inclose said cells;
and means for detachably securing each of lation to each other; individual means sub-' stantially triangular in shape for closing one end of each cell and integral with said walls; a single means oblong in shape,-integral with and constituting a hinge between said walls for closing the other end of all of said cells; and flap like. means for detachably securing each of said individual closing means to one of said walls, substantially as described.
3. In a flat container the combination of a set of cells triangular in cross section provided with an individual closure for one end of each cell; a second set of cells in staggered relation to said first set provided with an individual closure for each cell in said second set; combined closing and hinging means adapted to close the other ends of all the cells inboth sets, to permit the two sets of cells to open out and fold up, and to form a package having a thickness substantially equal to the depth of a single cell; and means associated with said individual closures for holding said sets of cells in their closed position, substantially as described.
4. In a fiat container comprising two staggered sets of cells the combination of a blank provided with two members forming the outer walls of both sets of cells, provided with side flaps, individual closing means, and having a member adapted to close the ends of all the cells, as well as to act as a hinge for said sets of cells; and additional blanks forming the other walls of said cells associated with said two members of said first named blank, substantially as described.
5. A blank for forming the outer walls of a plurality of cells comprising two members,
each having a plurality of spaced members for forming the outer walls of a plurality of cells, said spaced members being separated by additional spaced members to receive the folded portions of another blank forming the other walls of said cells; individual closing members triangular in shape provided with holding flaps; and a combined rectangular hinging and closing member joining said two blank members, substantially as described.
6. A flat container for cigars comprising two sets of staggered cells substantially triangular in cross section hinged together at one end, adapted to be opened out and closed up into a single flat package having a thickness substantially equal to the depth of a single cell; side flaps for overlapping the sides of said package When closed; and individual triangular shaped, flap like means for closing each cell at its unhinged end, and holding said sets of cells in their closed position, substantially as described.
7. A fiat container for cigars comprising tWo sets of cells adapted to be closed up and opened out with their open ends opposing each other; a rectangular hinge member provided With triangular shaped members joining said open ends and adapted to close 15 adapted to detachably hold said cells in 28 their closed positions, substantially as described.
