Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR G. HARRING- TON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Monon, in the county of White and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Article-Delivering Machines, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accom panying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in article delivering machines and has relation more particularly to a device of this general character especially designed and adapted for use in connection with calks; and an object of the invention is to provide a device of this general character having novel and improved means whereby the heels of a shoe may be properly operated upon for the initial insertion of the calks.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a device of this general character having novel and improved means whereby the calks to be inserted may be delivered into operative position in substantially an automatic manner.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved article delivering machine whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device is rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, all as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of the invention will be carefully defined in the appended claims.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, 1 will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of an article delivering machine constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention; Fig. 2 is a view in front elevation of the device as shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a fragmentary sectional view, on an enlarged scale, taken through the magazine herein included, certain coasting parts being shown in elevation; Fig. lis a view in front elevation of the device as illustrated in Fig. 3; Fig. 5 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 5-5 of Fig. 3; Fig. 6 is a fragmentary view, in perspective, of the upper extremity of the supporting bracket for the magazine as herein set forth; and Fig. 7 1s a fragmentary sectional view taken through the upper portion of the anvil herein embodied.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, 1 denotes a base of any preferred configuration and dimensions having project- 111g upwardly therefrom, the anvil 2 also of predetermined configuration and dimensions and having formed in its top and forward faces the recess or cavity 3 into which is limit the insertion of the heel end of the shoe so that the cut or slit will be uniform 1n all instances, 1 provide the top face of the anvil 2 with the groove 6 in communication with the recess or pocket 3 and in such groove 6 is positioned an end portion of a spring member 7, such member being anchored to the anvil in any desired manner, as indicated at 8. The inner or forward eX- tremity of such spring member 7 is flexed to afford a stop 9, as is particularly shown in Fig. 7, with which the heel end of a shoe is adapted to contact. After the heel end of the shoe has been properly heated, it is positioned within the recess or cavity 3 until its free extremity abuts the stop 9 and is rested upon the cutting edge of the member or knife 5. Such end is then struck either by a power hammer or a manually operated hammer until the member or knife 5 has properly penetrated the heel end, after cavity 3 the elongated vertically disposed recess or cavity 10 adapted to receive the opposite heel end of the shoe. 1 also find it of advantage in practice to have the cutting member or knife 5 of such a height as to terminate slightly below the top face of the anvil 2. Also suitably supported by the base 1 is the frame 11 preferably positioned to one side of the anvil 2 and in close prox imity thereto and having its upper portion provided with the work table 12. Projecting forwardly of the frame 11 below and in close proximity to the work table 12 is a bracket 14, to the opposite sides of which is pivotally secured, as at 15, the'vertic'ally disposed levers 16 having their upper extremities bentinwardly to afi'ord the vise jaws 20 overlying the forward portion of the work table 12, for a purpose to be hereinafter more particularly referred to. The lower extremity of the levers 16 are'inclined inwardly, as indicated at 17, and mounted for vertical movement between such inclined portions 17 is the rock arm 18 having laterally disposed arms 19 provided at their ends with the rollers 21 adapted to contact with the inner edges of the inclined portions 17 whereby downward movement of the rock arm 18 will result in a relative inward movement of the jaws 20 with a minimum of friction. As herein disclosed, the rock arm or lever 18 is directed through a vertically disposed elongated slot 22 formed in the forward face of the frame 11 while the inner extremity of such rock arm or lever is pivotally connected, as at 23, to a rear portion of such frame. The outer or opposite extremity of the rock arm or lever 18 is provided with a treadle Qt adapted to be engaged by the foot of the operator whereby requisite movement of the arms 16 may be efi'ected when desired. The vise jaws 20 are adapted to be normally separated and, as herein disclosed, this position is maintained through the medium of the retractable member 25 suitably secured at its opposite ends, as indicated at 26, to the arms 16 at suitable points below their pivotal connections 15, hereinbefore referred to. In order that the vise jaws may maintain their normal position, it is necessary that the rock arm or lever 18 be normally maintained at the limit of its upward movement and, as herein set forth, this is accomplished through the medium of the expansible member 27 having one end secured, as at 28, to the rock arm or lever 18 in advance of its pivotal connection 23, while the opposite extremity is suitably secured, as at 29, to a portion of the frame 11 above such rock arm or lever 18, as is believed to be self-evident. After the heel end has been properly cut or split by the cutting member or knife 5, such split or cut end is inserted between the separated vlse jaws 20 and after the plug or call: has been properly positioned within such out or split portion sufficient pressure is imparted upon the rock arm or lever 18 as to cause the vise jaws 20 to engage such heel end of the shoe as to properly secure the plug or calk within the shoe so that the same is in condition to be welded, as is believed to be self-evisecured to the frame 11 and terminating at r a predetermined distance above the work table 12 and having its opposite extremity provided with a laterally disposed socket 31 through which is adapted to be directed the upper extremity of the vertical portion 32 of a magazine, such vertical portion 32 being adapted to contain a supply of calks or plugs and for this purpose being provided with a central bore 33 of proper configuration in cross section. The bore 33 of the vertical portion 32 of the magazine is in communication with the bore 341 of the horizontal portion 35, such horizontal portion 35 projecting beyond opposite sides of the vertical portion 33 and in the rear part of the bore of the horizontal portion of the magazine is mounted a plunger 36 herein disclosed as an elongated member adapted to be snugly accommodated within the bore 34: and projecting rearwardly of the horizontal portion 35, such projected portion being suitably connected with an operating mechanism in a manner to be hereinafter more particularly referred to. Upon an inward movement of the plunger 36, a lower most plug or calk is adapted to be delivered by the plunger 36 through the discharge or mouth end of the horizontal portion 35 upon the work table 12, such discharged plug being maintained in position, in order to be properly engaged by a split heel end of a shoe, by the inturned lips 37 of the spring members 38 suitably secured, as indicated at 39, to the opposite side faces of the horizontal portion 35 of the magazine, the inturned lips 37 intersecting the mouth or discharge end of such magazine and being adapted to frictionally engage the sides of a calk or plug and thus serve as a substantially automatic means for retaining such discharge plug or call: in operative position. a
The work table 12 adjacent its rear portion is provided with a transverse retaining or guideloop 40 adapted to receive the discharge end of the horizontal portion 35 of the magazine which, in conjunction with the socket 31, hereinbefore referred to, serves to maintain such magazine in operative position. In order that such magazine may be removably held against displacement, I find it of advantage to have the rear part of the horizontal portion in contact with the bracket 41 projecting rearwardly from the frame 11, as is particularly shown in Fig.
1, and maintained in such contact through the medium of the contractable member 42 having one end suitably anchored, as indicated at 43, to the frame 11 while the opposite extremity of such member 42 is capable of detachable engagement with the rear extremity of the horizontal portion 35 of the magazine, as indicated at 44.
As herein disclosed, the plunger 36 is adapted to be reciprocated through the movement of the rock arm or lever 18 and for this purpose, I pivotally secure, as at 46, to the frame 11 the lever 47 of predetermined configuration and having its upper extremity connected with the outer extremity of the plunger 36 through the medium of the link 48. The lower extremity of the lever 47 is provided with the downwardly and rearwardly inclined portion 49, the inner edge of which being engaged by a laterally directed lip or tongue 50 suitably carried by the rock arm or lever 18 and maintained in such engagement through the medium of the rectractable member 51 anchored at one end, as at 52, to the lever 47 and at its opposite end, as at 53, to the frame 11. By this arrangement, it will be seen that as the rock arm or lever 18 is depressed the plunger 36 will move rearwardly so that a calk or plug may drop from the vertical portion 32 within the horizontal portion 35 of the magazine in advance of the plunger 36. When the rock arm or lever 18 returns to its upper position and the vise jaws 20 separate, the retractable member 51 will cause the plunger 36 to move inwardly and thus assure a calk or plug being in position for the next operation. It will also be obvious that the manner in which the magazine is mounted, as herein disclosed, readily permits a filled magazine to be substituted with convenience and facility for a magazine that may become empty.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that an article delivering machine constructed in accordance with my invention is of an extremely simple and comparatively inexpensive nature and is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and by reason of the effectiveness with which it performs its functions, and it Will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without material departure from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice.
I claim:
1. A device of the character described including a work table, vise jaws overlying the work table and normally maintained in separated relation, a magazine adapted to discharge between the separated jaws, an ejecting plunger mounted for reciprocal movement within the magazine, means for imparting movement to the vise jaws one toward the other, an operative connection between such means and the plunger whereby said plunger is operated simultaneously with the means for imparting movement to the vise jaws.
2. A device of the character described including a work table, a magazine adapted to discharge upon said work table, compressible means overlying the work table in close proximity to the discharge end of the magazine, said compressible means comprising normally separated members between which the magazine discharges, and relatively movable spring members carried by the discharge extremity of the magazine and normally overlying the bore thereof.
3. A device of the character described ineluding a work table, a magazine having a substantially horizontal portion overlying the work table, a plunger mounted for reciprocal movement within the horizontal portion of the magazine, relatively movable jaws overlying the work table in close proximity to the discharge end of the horizontal portion of the magazine, a rock lever for imparting relative movement to the jaws, and a second rock lever operatively engaged with the plunger and adapted to be engaged by the first mentioned lever whereby movement of the first lever imparts movement to the second lever for operating the plunger.
