ALOIIZO GREEN DUNNUCK, OF STOCKTON, KANSAS.
DRAFT-EQUALIZEB-.
Application filed October 6,
T0 (ZZZ whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALONZO GREEN Dun- NUCK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Stockton, in the county of Books and Eitate of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Draft-Equalizers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in draft-equalizers, and one of its objects is to equalize the draft when the power is unequally applied to the opposite sides of the draft tongue.
A further object of my invention is to provide an equalizer adapted to be applied to a wagon, sleigh, sled, mower, reaper or other vehicle in such a manner that three horses can be used side by side, one on one side of the tongue and two on the other, all pulling from a common point, and thedraft will be equally distributed.
A still further object of my invention is to provide an equalizer in which when one of the number of horses being used is in advance of the other horses the draft of all the horses will be equalized.
A still further object of my invention is to provide an equalizer which is simple, inexpensive and durable in construction, and easy, convenient, and effective in use.
The invention consists in the several features and the construction, combination, and arrangement of features as more fully hereinafter described and claimed.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a top plan view of my invention; and Fig. 2, a side view, with the single and double trees omitted.
In the drawings, in which like characters of reference denote corresponding parts throughout both views, and 1 represents a pole or tongue, 2 the cross-bar, secured rigidly to the pole by means of a screw-bolt 3. Brackets 4, preferably of U-shape form, are secured to red 5, which passes through the rear of the pole 1, the ears of said brackets extending laterally from the upper and lower edges of the pole.
6 and 7 represent upper and lower braces or stay bars, one on each side of the pole, each secured at one end to a screw-bolt 8, passing through the ears of the brackets 4, and each secured at the opposite end to a screw-bolt 9, passing through the end of the cross-bar 2.

parts 11 and 12, are provided, being pivoted to the screwbolts 9, between the braces 6 and 7, and their short arms 13 are pivotally connected by means of screw-bolts 14: to a slidable bar 15, which reciprocates over the pole 1, and the long arms 16 are provided with a series of holes 17 adapted to receive bolts or clips 18. A swingletree 19 is attached to one of the bell-crank levers by means of one of the bolts or clips, and a double-tree 20 is attached to the other bellcrank lever by means of the other bolt or clip and is provided with swingletrees 21.
By the construction and arrangement above described, a simple and eilicient means is provided for carrying out the objects of the invention, the draft attachments being secured at the appropriate points along the long arms of the bell-crank levers for equalizing the pull to be applied at opposite sides of the tongue or pole. In the illustration given, the pull on the swingletree 19 equals in effect that exerted upon the double-tree 20 because of the longer arm 16 which accommodates the swingletree. A compact and symmetrical structure is maintained within the frame-work about the pole 1, and all adjustments are made between the draft attachments and the corresponding bell-crank levers; and it is found that this arrangement, in combination with the particular manner of transmitting the strains through the frame-work and to the pole, gives improved results as regards bracing the frame-work evenly against the opposite side faces of the pole.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- 1. In a draft-equalizer, the combination of a pole, a cross-bar, a bolt securing said crossbar at its mid-point to said pole, pivot bolts carried by the opposite ends of said cross-bar, draft-equalizing mechanism carried by said pivot bolts, a pair of brackets secured to the opposite sides of the pole at the rear of said cross-bar and having ears projecting outward adjacent the upper and lower edges of the pole, and a brace for each of the opposite ends of said cross-bar, each brace comprising a pair of stay bars secured at their front ends to one of said pivot bolts and at their rear ends to the ears of the bracket on the corresponding side of the ole. p 2. In a draft equalizer, the combination of a pole, at cross-bar, a bolt securing said cross-bar at its mid-point to said pole, a pair of bell-crank levers, bolts pivoting said levers one to each of the opposite ends of said cross-bar, one arm of each of said levers extending to the rear of said cross-bar, a link pivotally connecting the rear arms of said levers, a pair of brackets at the rear of said link and having ears projecting laterally from the upper and lower faces of the pole, a bolt passing through said pole and securing both said brackets to the opposite side faces of the pole, a brace for each of the opposite ends of said cross-bar, each brace comprising a pair of stay bars secured at their front ends to the upper and lower ends, respectively, of one of said pivot bolts and at their rear ehds to the ears of the bracket on the corresponding side of the po e.
3. In a draft-equalizer, the combination of a pole, a cross-bar secured to said pole, a pair of bell-crank levers, bolts pivoting said levers one to each of the opposite ends of said cross-bar, one arm of each lever extendmg rearward from said cross-bar, a second bar pivotally connecting the rear ends of said arms, a pair of brackets secured to the opposite sides of the pole at the rear of said second bar and having ears projecting laterally from the upper and lower edges of the pole, a brace for each of the opposite ends of said cross-bar, each brace comprising a pair of stay bars secured at their front ends to one of said pivot bolts and at their rear ends to the ears of the bracket on the levers one to each of the opposite ends of said cross-bar, one arm of each of said levers extending to the rear of said cross-bar, each lever being in two parts embracing the adjacent end of the cross-bar between them, a link having its opposite ends embraced between the rear ends of the parts of said rearwardly extending arms and pivotally connected therewith, and a brace for each of the opposite ends of said cross-bar, each brace comprising a pair of stay bars secured at their front ends to the upper and lower ends, respectively, of one of said pivot bolts, the rear ends of each pair of stay bars terminating in approximately the planes of the upper and lower faces, respectively, of said pole and secured thereto.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
