GAS-SAVER.

Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan.. 5, i915.
Application filed May 2, 1912. Serial No. 694,625.
To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN W. LANGEN- Donrnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pensylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Gras-Savers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in .gas savers, and has for its obj ect to provide an exceedingly simple, effective and inexpensive device of this character which may be readily applied to a gas fixture or pipe system at the most convenient point.
A further object of the invention is to produce a gas saver from two frusto conical foraminous members fitted over one another and having a fabric situated between the walls of said members.
With these ends in view, this invention consists in the detail of construction and combination of elements hereinafter set forth and then specifically designated by the claim.
In order that those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains may understand how to make and use the same, I will describe its construction in detail referring by numeral to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in
whi cli- Figure l, is a side elevation of a gas saver made in accordance with my improvement. Fig. 2, a plan view thereof. Fig. 3, an enlarged longitudinal sectional view, for illustrating the construction, and Fig. Li, a similar view of a slightly modified form of my invention.
In carrying out my invention as here embodied, 2 represents the gas saver formed of three elements or members, two of which are produced from a suitable foraminous material, preferably wire gauze, the third element being any suitable fabric.
3 is the outer member or casing, the center of which is formed into a cup-like portion 4, and in forming said cup-like member, the sides are drawn in as at 5, the corners forming frictional leaves 6.
To more clearly explain how this outer member is formed, I will describe the forming process in detail. l A square piece of the foraminous material is taken afiid cupped up in the center which causes the edges of the material to be drawn in until the center of each edge; that is the portion lying midway between the corners, is drawn into the cupped up portion, after which time, the corners are bent up toward the cup like portion forming the frictional leaves which diverge from the side walls of the cup-like portion. The inner cup-like member 7 is formed in the same manner and is inserted within the outer cup-like member leaving a space between their side walls which is filled with a suitable fabric 8. rihe frictional leaves 9 formed with the inner cup like member overlap the frictional leaves 6.
In Fig. 4, I have shown the inner cup-like member 7, smaller than the outer cup-like member so that the leaves 10 formed therewith are merely extensions projecting from the body and in alinement with the side walls thereof. In this case, the inner cuplike member holds the fabric 8 in position but the leaves of said inner cup-like member do not engage the side walls of the pipe to assist in holding the gas saver in position.
In practice, a gas saver is inserted in any suitable place in the system, either at the meter or in each of the gas fixtures, at the point where they are connected to the supply pipes, or in said fixtures where the burner is attached thereto, or in the burner itself.
Of course I do not wish to be limited to the exact details of construction as here shown as these may be varied within the limits of the appended claim without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful is,-
As an article of manufacture a gas saver comprising a frusto-conical member, integral leaves formed with said member and bent backward from the edge thereof, a fabric covering said member, a second frustoconical foraminous member fitted over said fabric, entirely inclosing the same, and inte- In testimony whereof, I have hereunto gral leaves tormed with the last named n'tlixed my signature m the presence of tWo member and bent backward to form means subscribing Witnesses.
