GElOB/GE C. POVVER-S, OF DAYTON, OHIO.
DEVICE FOB. SURFACE-GRAINING'.
Specication of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan.. 5, i915.
Application filed July 27, 1914. Serial No. 853,532.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE C. POWERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Surface-Graining; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
l This invention relates to new and useful improvements in devices for surface graining in imitation of quarter sawed oak.
The object of the invention is to provide a graining implement by means of which the work of surface graining may be expeditiously done.
The implement is of such a character that a substantial portion of the surface to be grained is affected at each application of the implement, the application of the implement being simultaneous at all points of its contact with thesurface to be grained.
To these ends the device comprises a resilient elongated plate with one of its ends attached to a handle which is in a plane with the plate and whereby, in the operation of the device, it is manipulated something after the manner-.of applying an ordinary hand paddle, as will hereinafter more fully appear from the description to follow and from the accompanying drawings.
Preceding a detail description of the invention, reference is made to the accompanying drawings of which- Figure l is a longitudinal elevation of my improved graining implement; Fig. 2 is a similar view with parts of the handle broken away and a portion of the body of the implement appearing in section; Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional elevation on the line 3-3 of Fig. l; and Fig. 4 is a crosssectional elevation on the line 1- 4 of Fig. 2.
In a detail description of the invention, similar reference characters denote the same parts or elements both on the drawings and in the description.
The handle l of the implement is designed to have the proper shape to aiiord an easy and convenient handv grip. This part may be conveniently constructed of wood or metal. United to this handle l is an elongated plate 2 which may be constructed either of soft rubber, felt or any other material having the quality of flexibility. From the drawings, it will be seen that the handle l and the body or plate 2 of the implement lie in a common plane. Owing to this manner of connecting the handle at one end, the body or plate 2 may be iiexed to either side of the handle in doing the work, that is to say, the worlr of graining may be done by applying either side of the plate 2 to the surface to be grained. Extending through and embedded in said plate are a suitable number of metallic bars 3 the ends of which are united to the handle l where said handle abuts against the adjacent edge of the plate. The bars 3 impart to said plate the necessary resiliency to return the plate after each application to its normal position which is that shown in the drawings where the plate 2 is in a plane with the handle l. The end of the plate 2 is suitably secured to the adjacent end of the handle in a manner that gives the implement 'a neat appearance. Both surfaces of the plate 2 are provided throughout with iiake or wave-shaped figures 4 which uniformly extend out over the fiat surfaces of said plate. rIhese iigures are of the same material of which the plate is made, whether that be rubber or felt. Rubber, however, is preferable owing to its more enduring quality. The wavy projections 4c are similar in shape or outline to the flakes or figures observable on the surface of quartered oak. In using the implement it is applied similar to a stamp or paddle. The surface to be grained is supplied with the necessary foundation coats and a suitable graining color after which the graining implement is applied to the fresh graining color by simply striking the surface thereof with either side of the implement. It will be understood that the surfaces of the raised figures i are necessarily uniformly flat. The plate, together with these raised surfaces and the resilient bars 3, may be suitably formed and united in a mold so that the elements so combining to form the graining implement are inseparable.
I claim- 1. A surface graining implement, comprising an elongated resilient plate member having its opposite sides provided with graining figures said plate having a handle attached to one end thereof in a plane therewith, by means of which either side of said vplate may be applied to the surface to be grained.
2. A surface graining implement, coinprising an elongated plate having its opposite sides offset with graining figures, resilient members embedded in said plate and eX- tending longitudinally therein, and a handle attached to one end of said plate and lying in a plane therewith, whereby either side of said plate may be applied to the surface to be grained.
3. A surface` graining implement, comprising an elongated flexible body one end of which is provided with a handle extending in a plane with the body, and the other end of which is free, the opposite surfaces of said body having graining figures, and either side of said body being applicable to the surface to be grained.
if. A surface graining implement, oomprising an elongated plate both sides of which are provided with graining surfaces,
a handle attached to one end of said plate by means of which either side of said plate may be applied to the surface to be grained, and resilient members embedded in said plate and connected to said handle.
5. A surface grainng device, comprising an elongated body all portions of which lie in a common plane and both sides of which are provided with graining figures, a handle to which one end of said elongated body is attached throughout the width of said end, said body having a series of resilient bars embedded therein and extending longitudinally thereof, said bars being connected to the handle, whereby said body is given the requisite elasticity.
ln testimony whereof I aiiix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
