STRIPPER-OPERATING MECHANISM.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, THOMAS C. SHEEHAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Essex Fells, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Stripper-Operating Mechanism, of which the following is a specification.
This is a division of my application Serial No. 332,4:70 filed August 29, 1906, for a printing machine, and the invention relates particularly to that class of job printing machines known as self-feeding automatic platen presses and especially to the frisket gripper thereof.
The principal object of the present invention is to provide an improved stripper operating mechanism consisting of a small number of parts which will hold the sheet of paper taut against the platen just before the printing operation takes place; will keep the printed sheet of paper from sticking to the type or form when the form moves away from the printed sheet; and in which the stripper fingers will then open to permit the regular grippers to advance the sheet of paper to the delivery table, and operating so that the strippers will be given their necessary motions in a smooth and easy manner.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, in which a preferred embodiment of the invention is shown and in which Figure 1 is a view of a portion of such a press, looking toward the platen, in elevation and showing a portion of the gripper mechanism in connection with the stripper mechanism; and Figs. 2 and 8 are side views of the same showing the press in open and closed positions respectively.
The reference numeral 1 indicates the side frames of the machine for suitably supporting the component parts thereof, including the platen 87. The bed 5 which carries the inking mechanism is of well known construction and only the outline is shown, the inking mechanism not being indicated. TlllS is pivoted in the frame at 6 as usual, and 0s cillates in the well lmown manner through the instrumentality of a link 7, the connections for operating which are not illustrated. Between the side frames and adjacent to the feed, not shown, is located the registering table 20. The sheets are fed over this table Specification of Letters Patent.

Divided and this application filed January in any well known manner, the various devices for registering the sheets and placing the same in the position for the grippers being employed as usual. Tapes 24 which pass over the surface of the registering table are indicated for carrying the sheets forward from the feed. Then they are side registered, and brought to the gripper mechanism which forms the subject matter of my companion application thereon filed on even date herewith, Serial No. 814,672. There fore the said gripper mechanism is not described in full but it is mounted between two carriages 71, which are pivoted at 72 to a collar 73, fast on reciprocating rods 74 one on either side of the machine The said rods travel in suitable bearings 75, on the side frame, and motion is imparted to them by means of a bell crank 76, pivoted on the frame at 77, and connected to the said rods by means of a link 78. A spring 79 pushes on the short arm of the said bell crank, and tends to move the guide rods and the gripper mechanism carried thereon downwardly. A further means for effecting this down ward motion is found in a rod 80, pivoted on the bed at 81, and pulling against a projection 82 on the bell crank 76. This pull is made yieldingly by means of a spring 83. The upward motion of the guide rod and gripping mechanism is caused by the rocking of the bed, which pushes the short arm of the bell crank 76 down, hence moving the guide rods up. In order to prevent jars or blows by the engagement of the bed with the said bell crank, the latter is provided with friction rolls 84: (only one of which is seen). A cam 85 is connected with the inking mechanism and moves with the inking rollers (not shown), and as the bed rocks away from the platen, the said cam engages one of the rollers 84: in a smooth and easy fash ion, thus starting the downward motion of the bell crank. Next a hub 86 on the bed engages the other roll 84:, before the cam 85 leaves the first roll in order to rock the bell crank positively and move the grippers up, but this engagement of the hub with the bell crank takes place without any blow inasmuch as the bell crank has been started on its motion by the cam 85. The operation of these parts is clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 3.
The gripper mechanism travels in a straight line up and down over the surface of the platen 87.
The stripping means shown comprises two flat pieces, 117, mounted on an oscillating shaft 118 on the frame, having an arm 116 thereon. This shaft is operated in opposition to spring 118 by means of a roll 119 on the arm 116, engaging a track 120, which is carried by and reciprocates with the gripper carriage 71. As will be seen from Figs. 2 and 3, the roll 119 runs on the low part of the track 120 when the press is open, and the strippers afford no obstruction to the downward travel of the sheet. In Fig. 3 the roll is on the high part of the track, and the strippers are closed against the platen, and while in this position, a roll 121, carried by the bed, acts on a cam surface 122 on the arm 116 to positively hold the strippers in their position. .Thus it will be seen that the reciprocable sheet gripping device is yieldingly actuated by the springs 7 9 and 83 to operate the stripper throughout most of the action thereof but the bed positively operates the strippers toward the platen and holds them in position on the platen when the bed is in printing position.
while I have illustrated and described a preferred form in which my invention may be embodied, and while I have shown it as it may be constructed when used in connection with a particular type of printing machine, I am aware that many modifications may be made therein, and that the invention can be adapted for use with other types of printing machines by any person skilled in the art without departing from the scope of the invention as expressed in the claims. Therefore, I do not wish to be limited to the particular construction shown and described, but
What I do claim is 1. In a printing machine, the combination of a bed, a stripper, means to initially advance the stripper to operative position, and.
separate means carried by the bed forpositively holding the stripper in position on the platen when the bed is in printing position.
2. In a printing machine, the combination of a bed, pivoted strippers located adjacent to the platen of the machine, yieldingly operated devices for initially positioning the strippers close against the platen, and means on the bed for positively forcing the strippers toward the platen.
3. In a printing machine, the combination of a stationary platen, a movable bed, a pin mounted on said bed, a pairof pivoted strippers mounted adjacent to the platen, means for swinging the strippers toward the platen, and a cam connected with said strippers for engaging said pin and positively forcing the strippers against the platen.
4. In a printing machine, the combination of a platen, strippers located adjacent thereto, a movable carriage for carrying a gripping mechanism, a device for operating the strippers comprising a lever having a roll,
and a track having an offset portion n1ov-,
able with said carriage for engaging said roll to operate the strippers.
5. In a printing machine, the combination of a stripping device, a bed, a movable sheet gripping device, means operated by the gripping device for operating the stripping device, and means on the bed for positively operating the stripping device.
6. In a printing machine, in combination, a bed, a platen, a stripper, means to preliminarily position said stripper in opera tive relation to said platen as the bed commences its movement, and additional means for thereafter positively holding said stripper against said platen, said additional means becoming operative as the bed completes its movement to printingposition.
