' To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRANK CONRAD, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Swissvale, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Electrical Regulators, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to electrical regulators, and it has for its object to provide a simple and effective regulator of the kind in which the regulation is effected by adj ustment of the field excitation of a dynamoelectric machine.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, the single figure of which is a diagrammatic view of a system of thetributicn embodying the same.
As illustrated, a system in connection with which the present invention may be conveniently employed comprises a main generator, the armature 1 of which is connected to a suitable circuit 2-34 and the field magnet winding 5 of which is supplied with exciting current from the armature 6 of an exciter. The exciter is provided-with a field.
magnet winding 7 that is shunt'excited, or supplied with current from any other suitable source, and in series with which is a resistor 8 that is adapted to be shunted by a pair of cooperating stationary and movable contact terminals 9 and 10 of a relay 11. The relay is provided with another pair of cooperating stationary and movable contact terminals 12 and 13, and the movable contact terminals 10 and 13 are actuated by a winding 14 that is supplied with current from the exciter and the circuit of which is governed in a manner to be hereinafter more fully explained. The relay is provided with a second winding 15 that is permanen'tly connected to the exciter and is arranged in opposition to the winding 14. When t a winding 15 is energized alone, the contact terminals 10 and 13' are thereby maintained out of engagement with the corresponding stationary terminals 9 and 12 againstthe tension of a spring 11*, but when bothofthe windings .14 and 15 are energized their magnetizing effects neutralize each other and the spring 11 then separates the said terminal members.

'the stationary terminal 16 being mounted upon one end of a spring 18 or being otherwise resiliently supported. T he contact terminal 17 is carried by one end of a lever 19 from the other end of which is suspended a core 20 that is surrounded by an actuating winding 21 and is partially counter-balanced by an adjustable counterweight 22. The winding 21 receives energy that is proportional tothe voltage of the distributing circuit 2- 34 and accordingly varies the position of the contact terminal 17 in' response to variations of the said voltage.
The contact terminals 12 and 13 control the circuit of an electromagnet winding 24 having a core 25 that is carried by a lever 26 and the movements of which are preferably retarded by means of a dash pct 27. The winding 24, when energized, serves to draw the core 25 downwardly against the tension of a spring 28. The lever 26 is connected to the lever 19 by means of a retarding device or dash pct 29. I
In the'operation of the regulator, the distance of the movable contact terminal 17 from the terminal 16 is varied in response to fluctuations of the voltage of the circuit 2-34 by means of the winding 21, and the said contact terminal is moved into and out of engagement with the contact terminal 16 by means of the magnet winding 24 which is alternately energized and deenergized by reason of the engagement and disengagement of the relay contact terminals 12 and 13.
Variation of the distance of the contact terminal 17 from the terminal 16 is effected by the winding 21. while, at the same time. it is vibrated into and out of engagement with the terminal 16, by reason of the dash pot 29 between the levers l9 and 26, the two relatively movable members of the dash pot being caused to occupy varying positions with respect to each other by the winding 21. The dash pot is preferably so adjusted that a continuously applied force, such as that produced by the winding 21, will cause relative movement between the two parts thereof, but so that intermittently applied operating contact members, two actuating devices for one of them, and a y elding connection between one of said devlces and the g actuated contact member having a time-eleone of .said members and having in resp'onse to the voltage of the distributingcircuit and, through the relay contacts 9 and 10, thezexcitation of the field of the exciter is so governed as to properly compensate for any deviations of the voltage from its normal value.
Since the present regulator operates to elfect the desired regulation by adjustmentof the field excitation of the generator, it is evident that it may be employed for regulating in accordance with variations of the electrical condition of a generator or circuit other than the voltage by simple and obvious changes of the connections of the winding 21, or by the substitution'therefor of other suitable means for varying the position of the contact terminal member17, all within the spirit of the present invention.

The combination withla dynamo-electric machine and a circuit connected thereto, of a regulator for the dynamo-electric machine comprising a contact member, two actuating windings for the contact member energized from the said circuit, a yielding connection through which one of said windings actuates the contact member having a time-element function and relay mechanism controlled by said contact member and in turn controlling both the excitation of the dynamo electric machine and the energization of the latter winding.
5. In an electrical-regulator, the combine two actuating devices for one of them, of a connection between one of said devices and the actuated contact member comprising relatively movable parts'that are retarded in their relative movements.
6.
