To all whom it mag/ concern Be it known that we, COURTNEYPVINTER and DUNBAP. A. RosnNTuAL, citizens of the United States, residing at Washington, Dis trict of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper-Towel Holders, of which the following is a speclcation. 4

Our present invention relates to that particular class of towel holders for dispensing single towel lengths from a roll of absorbent paper which is perforated in the usual manner; and the invention consists in certain novel constructions and combinations of parts as will be hereinafter described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawing Figure 1, is a front view of the towel holder partly broken away. F ig. 2, is a central section thereof. Fig. 3, is a section on line 3-3 of Fig. 2. The body l, of our improved towel holder is preferably constructed of sheet metal and consists of the rear plate 2, bottom 3, front 4, and end plates 5.l The front plate 4, is extended upward and outward from the bottom plate 3, and in a straight line. rThe upper edge 4a, of the plate 4, terminates in a rounded bead, for the purpose of presenting a smooth surface to the paper toweling as it is unwound from the roll 6, which is freely disposed within the body. A roller 7, is journaled to the side plates 5, and extends along the length of the body or container 1. The roller 7 is located in the approximate center ofthe bottom plate 3, for the purpose of receiving the weight of the roll G, thereby reducing friction to a minimum.

The hood or cover 8, is preferably constructed of sheet metal andhinged vto the upper edge of the rear plate 2,-of the body l, in the usual manner. The front plate 9, of the cover 8, is extended downwardly and inwardly in front of and spaced from the body front and terminates in a coiled or rounded lower edge, 10, substantially in the planel of the body base, the free edge of the toweling feeding downwardly in the space between the body front and' cover thus formed. cover b, is provided with suitable end plates which overlap the body portion of the de-4 vice. The lower edge of the end plates are bent inwardly at right angles as shown at 8, securely holding the cover when in its lowered position. The end plates 8, are constructed of a resilient material and may be suliciently deflected to permit the locking and unlocking of thc lower edges thereof.

An important feature of our invention is the provision of toothed edges or severing strips on the inner side of the front plate 9 of thc cover, which strips are located near the lower edge of the said plate 9, for the purpose of effectively severing the web at each line of perforations and preventing the withdrawal of more than one towel at a time. The toothed members or severing strips 1Q, are preferably constructed of wire and are provided with a plurality of loops 13,..vhich are formed from the body of the wire. A member thus formed is secured to the plate 9, on each side of the opening 11, preferably by soldering, as shown in Fig. 4.

A. metallic roller 14, the approximate length of the roll 6, is placed in the body l, as illustrated in Fig. 2, and caused to rotate by the unwinding of the roll. The purpose of the weighted bar or roller 14, is to preventthe paper toweling from buckling at the opening 11, and also to eliminate any possibility of the free end of the toweling being drawn back into the container.

In the usual construction of towel holders of this type, it has been comparatively simple to withdraw asmany towels as was desircd, which resulted in a great waste. In

`order to obviate this and other defects, we

have with other novel features, relatively inclined the front 9, of the cover and the front 4, of the body portion in such 'a degree that the upper edge of the latter lies in a vertical plane in advance of the vertical plane of the lower edge of the former, thus causing the towelingto assume an acute angle as it is withdrawn.

. hanging cover and the body and through which space or opening the web is drawn from the holder there is provided means to eli'ect a separation of the web along the lines of the perforations so that towels of delinite length may be taken one at a time from the holder.

Although we have described the embodiment of our inventlon, we may desire to make such changes in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts thereof as do not depart from the spirit of the invention, and the scope of the appended claims.

IVe claim:

1. A towel holder of the class described, consisting of a body portion having a rear plate for attachment to a suitable support, a flat bottom, an upwardly and forwardly inclined straight ,front terminating in an upper forward beaded edge, and end plates, a roller extending transversely across the lower portion of the body and having its ends journaled in said end plates to receive a paper roll thereon, a weighted roller freely disposed within the body between the paper roll and the inclined front, a cover adapted to overlap the said body portion having a flat top, the rear edge of which is hingedly connected to the upper edge of the rear body plate, downwardly and rearwardly inclined front having itslower edge beaded and terminating in the same horizontal plane with the body base and having acut-out portion opening through its said edge, said cover being provided with cover end plates having ears, projecting inwardly from the rear lower edges thereof, a series of rounded and inwardly projecting teeth secured to the inner side of the cover near the lower edge thereof, the said teeth extending approximately midway in the space between the front plate of the body portion and the front plate of the cover, when the said cover is lowered to its closed position, substantially as and for the purpose described.

2. A towel holder of the class described consisting of a body portion, a roller journaled and extending transversely across the lower portion of the body to receive a paper roll thereon, a weightedroller freely disposed within the body and bearing against the paper roll, a cover adapted to overlap the said body portion, and a series of rounded and 4inwardly projecting teeth secured to the inner side of the cover near the lower edge thereof, substantially as described.

3. In a towel holder of the class described, a body portion, a roller journaled across the lower portion of the body, a cover adapted to overlap the said body'portion, a downwardly and rearwardly inclined front, having a lower beaded edge, a series of rounded and inwardly projecting teeth secured to the inner side of the cover near the lower edge the eef, the said teeth extending approximat ly midway in the space between the body portion and the front plate of the cover, substantially as described.

4. In the combination of a towel holder, of the class described, a body portion, a front plate integral with the body portion, a roller journaled within said body portion, a cover, a front plate integral with the cover, and a series of rounded and inwardly projecting teeth secured to the inner side of the cover near the lower edge thereof, the said teeth extended in the space between the front plate of the cover, substantially as and for the purpose described.

5. In the combination with a body portion, a roller journaled thereon, a cover hinged to said body portion, and rounded teeth secured to the inner side ol' the cover near the lower edge thereof, substantially as described.

6. The combination of a casing including a body and a cover, the latter having its front over-hanging the front of thebody in spaced relation thereto forming an opening, said casing adapted to contain a roll of toweling material which may be drawn therefrom in web form through said opening and which is perforated at intervals to divide the material into sheets of definite length, and a plurality of rigid fingersl arranged in the path of movement of the web to effect disconnection of one sheet at a time along the lines of perforations as the web is drawn through said opening.

7. The combination of a casing including a4 body and a cover, the latter having its front overhanging the front of the body in spaced relation thereto forming an opening, said casing adapted to contain a roll of toweling material which may be drawn in web form through said opening and which is perforated at intervals to divide the material into sheets of definite length, and a plurality of rigid fingers rigidly mounted between the cover and the body to engage the perforations of 'the web and thereby efiect ay disconnection of one sheet at a time from the web as the latter said opening.

8. The combination of a casing provided with an opening, said casing adapted to contain a roll of toweling material adapted to is drawn through 'roo be drawn in web formthrough the opening l of the casing and'having lines of perforations which divide it into sheets of definite length, and a plurality of ngers concealed Within the casing to engage in the lines of 'perforations to disconnect one sheet of toweling at a time from the web as the web is drawn from the casing.

9. T he combination of a case .adapted to receive a roll of toweling material which is perforated transversely at intervals to divide lthe same into sheets of definite length, said ease provided With an opening through which said toweling material maybe drawn in Web form, and spaced sets of fingers to engage in the lines of perforations to disconnect one sheet' at a time from the Web as the web is drawn from the ease.

10. The combination of a' case adapted to receive a roll of tovveling material which is perforated transversely at intervals to divide the same into sheets of definite length, said -case provided with an opening through which said toweling material ,may be dravvn in web form, and means confined Within said opening and concealed Within the case to operate on the perforations to disconnect one. sheet 4at a time from the Web toweling material as it is drawn through said opening and effect a disconnection of sheets of material'from the web.

Thecombination of a case including a body and a cover, the latter having its front overhanging the front of the body to form an opening, spaced rollers mounted in the case, said case adapted to contain a roll of tovv-eling material engageable with said roll ers and adapted to be drawn in web form through said opening and perforated at intervals to divide the material into sheets of definite length, and sets of fingers arranged between the overhanging front of the cover and the body to engage the perforations and effect disconnection of one sheet at a time as the web is drawn through said opening.

13. The combination of a case including a body and a cover, the latter having its front overhangingthe front of the body to form an opening, said case adapted to contain a roll of towelivng material adapted to be drawn in web form through said opening and perforated at intervals to divide the material into sheets of denite length, and

means in said opening to operate on the perforations and disconnect one sheet at a time` v from the web as it is drawn through said opening.
