Be it known that I, -FRANK M.` SoHAEFEn, a citizen of the" United YStates, and, resident of the city of Chicago, in the county of Cookv and State of lillinois, have invented certain -new and useful lImprovements,r fin Meat-Blocks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and eXact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the numbers of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

Meat blocks when in use, soon become worn with the constant chopping of the cleaver thereon, and heretofore repair thereof, except by the purchase of a new block, has been diHicult. Furthermore, such blocks after used for a comparatively short period of time, become unsightly.

It is an object of this invention to afford a meat block comprising a base having removably seated therein, and rigidly engaged thereto, an upper facing of wood or other suitable material, which may be at any time readily removed to be repaired or dressed,

and which, owing to the small quantity of wood required for its construction, may at any time be replaced at small cost.

It is an object of the invention to afford a construction whereby the wooden facing of the block may be very quickly removed from place, and to afford an exceedinglyk l rigid, strong and heavy base constructed to permit such rigid support and quick detachment.

- The` operation is obvious fromlthe construction described, and obviously the cuti ting face may be renewed or repaired, as

desired, or a new cutting block substituted very quickly when necessary.

Although I have shown the construction vas'circular, it is, of course, to be understood that any desired conformation of the pedestal or'cutting block may be used, and if desired the bolts 8 and 19, may beomitted, thus affording a reversible block, and that other details of construction may be varied without departing from the principles of this invention. i c

I claim as my invention 1.l A meat block, embracing a pedestal, an,

imperforate cutting block on said pedestal., and locking means for said block passing through the sides of said pedestal and ena gaging the bottom of said cutting block, said locking means adapted to be inserted and removed through the top of said pedestal.

2. A meat block, embracing a pedestal having a recess in the top thereof, a cutting block fitting in said recess, and locking means for said block passing through the sides of said pedestal and acting to retain said block in said recess.

3. A meat block, embracing a pedestal having a recess in the top thereof, a cutting block fitting in said recess, rods slidably eX- tending through said block, eye bolts engaged in the under side of said block and through the eyes of which said rods pass,

said eye bolts extending through diagonally f disposed apertures opening through the sides of said pedestal, and nuts on said bolts engaging said pedestal for holding said block in the recess in the pedestal.
