HPENCIL-SHARPENER.
Improved Pencil-Sharpener, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention has for its object .toprovide a pencil sharpener which may be carried on the pencil and which serves to hold the pen-- oil to a pocket of. a garment in which the pencil is carried. The pencil sharpener is constructed with a knife which makes with an oblique out, a long'or short point as desired. This knife may be moved out of op-.
erative position when it is desired to move the pencil sharpener up from the P611011 point. The sharpener forms a rest for the fingers when thepencil is used for writing. Other objects of the invention will appear in the following specification in which the preferred form of my invention is disclosed.
In the drawings similar reference characters refer to similar parts in all the views in which- Figure 1 is a view showing an elevation, the pencil on which my pencil sharpener is secured; Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevation of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a sectional plan view of Fig. 1, and Figs. 1 and 5 are views show ng the position of the blades and the guide when the sharpener is used to cut the pencll point.
By referring to the drawings, 1t will be seen that a collar 5 is provided through which the pencil 6 is disposed, this collar 5 having an extending finger 7 which is adapted to cooperate with the pencil 6, to clamp a pocket member. By this means, the pencil may be secured to the pocket so that there will be no danger of its being lost should theperson stoop down. Extending in the direction opposite to that in which the finger 7 extends there are fingers 8 which are secured to the collar 5 and which are provided with openings 9 for receiving a guide member 10. This guide member 10 has an offset 11 which is pivoted at 12 to the blade 13, the blade being pivoted at 14 to the collar 5. Disposed opposite the blade 13 and between the fingers 8 there is a finger 15, the fingers 8 and 15 being adapted to engage the sides of the pencil 6. When the pencil is bemg sharpened, the guide 10 is disposed through the openings 9 in the fingers 8 which'hold Specification of Letters Patent.

the blade 13 in position so that when the pencil 6 is turned relatively thereto the cuttingedge 13 on the blade 13 will cut the pencil point as may be desired. As will be seen-by. referring to Fig. 4 of the drawings,
the blade'l3 is pivoted at a greater distance from the right hand finger 8 than from the left hand finger 8, and as the guide 10 is first disposed through the opening 9 in the right hand finger 8 and then through the opening 9 in, the left hand finger 8, the blade 13 is disposed obliquely relatively to the pencil. The finger 15 is provided to serve as a rest for the pencil.
After the pencil has been sharpened, the guide 10 is removed from the openings 9 in the fingers 8 and the blade 13 is rotated so that the guide 10 is raised. As will be seen by referring to Fig. 3 of the drawings, this guide 10 has a channel 11 in which the cutting edge 13 of the blade 13 may be disposed. When the guide 10 has been moved to'the position shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings, the resilient flanges 16 on the finger 7 engage, one, the rear edge of the blade 13 and the other, the guide 10 to hold the guide 10 and the blade 13 in inoperative position. The free end 13 of the blade 13 has an enlarged portion 13 which is adapted to engage the pencil 6 as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings to hold the collar 5 in adv justed position.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new anddesire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. In a pencil sharpener, a member adapted to be secured to a pencil and being provided with a finger having an opening, a blade pivoted to the member, and a guide pivoted to the end of the blade and normally disposed in the opening.
:2. In a pencil sharpener, a collar in which a pencil is normally disposed, a blade pivoted to the collar on an axis, which, if extended, would pass through the collar, a guide mounted on the blade and guide means on the collar for cooperating with the guide for the purpose specified.
3. In a pencil sharpener, a collar having fingers with openings extending from opposite sides of the collar, a blade pivoted to the collar, and a guide pivoted to the blade and adapted to be disposed in the openings.
4. In a pencil sharpener,
a guide pivoted to the blade and having means for protecting the edge of the blade and meanson. the member for holding the guide in adjusted position.
5. In a pencil sharpener, a collar having fingers extending from opposite sides of the collar and having means for holding a guide in adjusted position, a finger extending from the collar at one side of the first'fin'gers, a blade pivotedto the collar oppositethe sec- 0nd mentioned finger, and a guide pivoted to the blade and adapted to be engagedby the said means.
6. In a pencil sharpener, acollar-having fingers extending from opposite sides of the collar and having meansfor holding a guide in adjusted position, a finger extending from the collar at one side of the first mentioned fingers, a blade having an edge and pivoted to the collaropposite the second mentioned fingers, a guide pivoted to the bladeand adapted to be engaged by the saidmeans and means on the guide for protecting the edge of the blade.
7. In a pencil sharpener, a collar, a blade pivoted to the collar on an axis, Which, if
extended, Would pass through the collar, and means on the collar for holding the blade in operativeposition and relatively to the collar.
Copies of this patent: may be obtained for 8. In a pencil sharpener, a collar-in which .a pencil. may be disposed, a finger extending intone directionfrom the collar and provided with means for'holding a guide in ad justed position, a finger extending from the collar in the opposite direction for co-acting with the pencil to grip a pocket member, a blade pivoted to the collar and aguide pivoted to the blade'an'dadapted to be held by the said means.
