To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HORACE L. RILEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Richwood, in the county of Nicholas and State of Vest Virginia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Compressed- Air Vater-Elevators, of which the follow ing is a specification.
This invention is an improved apparatus for elevating water or other liquid by means of fluid under pressure, such for instance as compressed air, the apparatus being es pecially' adapted for use in driven or bored wells for raising water therefrom by means of compressed air, the object of the invention, being to provide an improved apparatus of this character which is cheap and simple, is not likely to get out of order and which insures the delivery of proper proportion of compressed air with the columnof water and is substantially automaticin operation, so that as long ascompressed air 18 supplied to the apparatus and there is a supply'of watei','the latter will be raised and delivered at the mouth of the well.
The invention consists in the construction,
combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings :-Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of a portion of a. well casing provided with compressed air water elevating apparatus constructed in accordance with my invention and showing such apparatus partly in elevation and partly in section. Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional View of the same on a plane intersecting the horizontal part of the air supply pipe. Fig. 3 is a vertical central sectional view of the same. Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view on a plane intersecting the upper portion of the eduction pipe. Fig. 5 is a similar view on a plane intersecting the lower portion of the eduction pipe and also intersecting the cage. Fig. 6 is an enlarged detail sectional view of the return air jet nozzle.
A tubular well casing is indicated at 1 and is provided at its upper end. with a collar 2 which is threaded thereto and forms an outstanding annular flange. A nipple 3 is arranged at the upper end of and with its lower portion in the well casing 1 and 1s provided with a collar 4 which is threaded thereon and which forms a cap for the upper end of the well casing. A packmg gasket 5 is interposed between the collars 2 and 1 and said collars are secured together by clamping bolts 6. The nipple is also provided with a locking nut '7 which bears on the collar 4.
An eduction pipe 8 is connected to the lower end of the nipple 3 by a coupling 9. The eduction pipe is of suitable length, extends down in the well casing to a point below the level of the water in the well and the said eduction pipe is provided at a point near its lower, submerged end with vertically elongated intake openings 10 for water. An air jet cage 11 is arranged in and removable from the lower portion of the'eduction pipe and is provided with a series or radial wings 12 which serve to di- I provided with an inverted conical seat 13.
A closure nut 1a is screwed to the lower end of the eduction pipe and supports the cage and holds the latter in place.
The lower end of the vertical arm 15 of a T 16 is threaded to the upper end of the nipple 3 and a water delivery pipe 17 is threaded to the upper end of said vertical arm of the T and may run to any point where it is desired to deliver water. In the horizontal arm18 of the T is threaded a plug 19. An air supply pipe 20 extends through the plug 19 and also extends down through the nipple 3 and the eduction pipe and is providedat its lower end with an upwardly directed air jet nozzle 21. A packing gland 22 is threaded on the outer end of the plug 19 and the said air supply pipe also passes through said packing gland.
Any suitable means, such for instance as a pump 23 may be employed for compressing air and supplying the same to my water lows :--Vi hen compressed air is forced through the pipe 20 it is discharged from the lower end thereof upwardly and outwardly by its jet nozzle 91 in that portion of the eduction pipe immediately abovethe page 11. This portion of the eduction pipe being below the level of water in the Well the upwardly directed current ol con1- Pl'QSSQCl air in passing i'ipnardly through the eduction pipe and delivery pipe serves to aerate the Water and also to elevate the same so that a continuous stream of water is de liver-ed between th delivery pipe as long as th e is a supplyin thewell and compressed air is kept supplied to "the apparatus.-
The cage, by reason of its cross sectionally cross shaped formation and the chant uels which it provides between the Wings serves to control the supply of Water to the oduction pipe and to evenly distribute the Water supply around the jet nozzle.
