App licationfiled May 13, 1913. Serial No. 767,277.
To all'whom'it may concern:
Be it known that I, jBrRoN GUNNER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Hillburn, in the county of Rockland and State of New York, have invented [a new and Improved Puzzle, of whichthe following is a full,clear, and exact description.
1 This invention relatesto the general class of games and toys and has todo more particularly with a pocket puzzlewhich calls for a display of a high degree ofingenuity and resourcefulness in effecting its solution, whilelat the same time the puzzle affords considerable amusement and entertainment.
The general object ofthe invention is to provide'a puzzle of comparatively simple andinexpensive construction and made ofsuch material that it can be conveniently carried in the pocket and which wi'llvlast a long time, as itis' made of durable material.
' The. invention comprises a body piece made of v leather or other suitable flexible qi'naterial .h ving a novel arrangement of slits and 'openlngs in which 1s threaded a string, ribbon or other flexible key element which is capable of being removed from the body piece by following a predetermined series of movements, steps or manipulations which are very difficult to discover, so that v the solution of the puzzle calls for a display a through the opening 4-.- The two members of ingenuity, resourcefulness and. attention.
- ,For a more detailed understanding of the invention reference is to behad to the accompanying drawing takenflin connection with the following description. and the claims appended-hereto. I t
In the drawings which illustrate certain embodiments of the invention Figure l is a perspective view ofthe body piece with the ribbon or stringelement removed. Fig.2 is a perspective view otthe complete puzzle with the string or ribbon element applied thereto; Fig. 3 is a front view showing the preliminary steps in the solution of the puzzle; Figs. 4, 5 and 6 are longitudinal sec tional views showing successive steps necessary to the completion ofthe puzzle and fol lowing the steps-leading up to Fig. 3; Fig. 7 is a diagrammatic View of the simplest-form of the puzzle; and Figs. Sand 9 are'diagrammatic views of slightly more complicated forms of the puzzle. I
Referring to the drawings, A designates the body piece of the puzzle which is a strip of leather or other suitable flexible mate Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 15, 1914.
- rial having longitudinal slits 1 and 1 of suitable length to form between the slits a keeper or loopmember 2, there being eyelets 3 and 3", if desired, at the ends, of the slits 1 and 1 The slits'do not extend to the ends of the body piece A and intermediate oneend of the'body piece. and the slits is an opening 4 formed by apertures 5 and connectingslits 6, the apertures and slits being so [formed that "the opening i is V-shaped, with the tongue8 forming one side of the opening.- It is to beunderst'ood, however, that the opening 4; may be of any other de sired form. At the oppositeend of, the body. piece A areopenings 8 and. 9 which may be formed in the same way as the. opening 4:. The removable string or other" flexible ele-v ment B is shown as a length'o fbaby ribbon having stops 10 applied to the ends thereof, these stops being in the .form'of rings or any other suitable devices so that the removable element l3" cannot betaken out: of thebody piece except'by followingjtheivart ous prescribed movements hereinafter to be described. VVhen' the "removable element B is applied to the body (piece A the portion Z) crosses the keeper or. loop member B at the upper end thereof, thence passes through the upper openings 3 and 3" upwardly therefrom at the back of the body piece A and 6? and ofthe flexible element B extend downwardly at the front of the body or piece A, passing under the crossing portion 6" and successively through the openings 8 and 9, asclearly shown in Fig. 2. Thisis the condition of thepuzzle when the solution begins.
.The 72' of the ribbon element downwardly and pass it successively through the openings 8 I and 9 as shown in Fig. 3, itbeing necessary to double or bendthe flexible body piece A in' 'this operation. The rings or stops 10' are then passed through the loop formed by the portion drawn downwardly through the openings 8 and 95 Whenthis isdonethe body piece is pulled out flat and in doing] so the ribbon element D will assume the position shown in diagram Fig. 9. The description of the solution of the problem both in Figs. 2 and 9. The nextstep confirst step is to draw the middle part 95 I from now on will apply to forms shown sists in doubling the bodypiece A on the 4 line a, b, Fig. 2, so as to bring the openings 8 and 9 opposite each other, the folding of the body piece being backward and the I relation of the parts in the position they now occupy, as shown in Fig. 4:. The body piece A is then folded forwardly on the line 0, d, Fig. 2, so as to bring the opening l in line with the openings 8 and 9, as shown in Fig. 5. The keeper orloop' memher 2 is then threaded forwardly through the openings 4, 8 and 9, as shown in'Fig. 6.
During these folding operations no atten-. tion is-paid to the ribbon element B, but
whenthe loop member 2 is threaded through the openings 4, 8' and 9 the two ends "of the ribbon element B are grasped and the ribbon pulled forwardly, and in so doing it,
YA is folded and manipulated to bring about the position shown in Fig. 6 when the ribbon element B is inserted in the looped member 2. The'two ends of'the body piece A are then grasped, one ineach hand, and
pulled apart so as to straighten the body piece, whereupon theelement B will. bein the 'position shown in Fig; 9. It now reI- mainst'o pull down the middle portion'b" shown in Fig. 2.
of the ribbon element B and pass such mid.-
9, asshown in Fig. 3, when the stops .10 are placed through the, loop formed by the mid dle portion 6', When thisv is done the body piece A. is pulled out straight .so'that the ribbon element B will assume the position;
I In solvingthe simplestform of the puzzle shown in Fig. 2, the body piece A is first forwardly doubled approximately on 'the line 6, f, and then the keeper member 2 is passed throughthe opening l in the same manner. shown inoFig. 6, and the ribbon element Bcan be removed. In solving-the puzzle shown in Fig, 8 the body piece A is doubledforwardly approximately on the line 9, 72,,so as to bring theopening 8f oppositethe opening 4;", andthen the keeper member 2? is passed through the openings 8 in order to enable the ribbonelement B to be removed. Of. course, in reapplying the.
Copies-o1 this patent-may be obtained V In the following claims the f terni ribbon element? isintended to include a chain, cord,
string or any other flexible device which will serve the desired purpose.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying .draw- H I ings, the advantages of the method of opera tion and of the'device shown will be readily understood by those skilled in the art to which the invention ,appertains, and while I have described the device which I now consider to be the" best embodiment thereof, 1
I' desire to haveit understood that the device shown is merely illustrative, and that i such changes may be made whendesired as are within the scope of the appended claims.
1 "Having thus described. my invention, I
movable ribbon element crossing the keeper member and passing through. the opening at one "end and thence through'the opening at theopposite end, said ribbon element having stops larger than the said" openings to prevent theirpassage through the latter;
2. Apuzzleof the class described com-f prising a body piece having apair of openings at one end, and bendable} betweerrthe: dle portion'b, through the openings 8 and I openings, and an opening at .the opposite end, said body piece being bendable: at a the keeper member andpassing through the single opening atoneend'and successively through the two openings'atthej other end of the body piece, there being stops on th ends of the ribbon element. 2
In testimony whereofI have signed my name to this specification in [the of twosubscribing witnesses.
