LOCOMOTIVE TENDER AND CAB CONSTRUCTION.
Specification. of Letters Patent;
Application filed July 5, 1913. Serial No. 777,551.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES T; Wnsr- LAKE, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of St. Louis, Missouri, have invented acertain new and useful Improvement in Locomotive Tender and Cab Construction, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact descri tion, such as will enable others skilled in t e art to whlch i-t appertains'to makeand usethe same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, formingpart of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a locomotive tender, a ortion of a locomotive,
cab and-a ortion o soar to the rear of the tender, sai tender and cab being constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged side elevational view partly in section of the rear end of the tender. Fig.
3 is a horizontal section taken approximately on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1." Fig. 4 is a rear 'elevational view of the locomotive cab. Fig.
7 5 is a front elevational view of the locomo tive tender. Fig. 6 1s a rear elevational view of the tender. My invention relates generally to'railway car construction and more particularly to the construction of the end portions of a locomotive tender and the rear end of the locomotive cab, the principal object of my invention bein to provide comparatively large, strong an rigid bearing surfaces referably in the form of reinforcing diap ragms or walls at both ends of the'locomotive tender and at the rear end of the locomotive cab, which construction is for the purpose of resisting end shocks and crushin strains de-v livered to the ends of the ten er and cab, thus materially reducing the tendency of the cars to telescope in case of collisions and consequently affordingl the greatest ossible degree of safety. to t e trammen W "o areusually stationed upon theengine and tender.
,v-Apfurther object .of my invention is to eliminate the entrances or doors of the locomotive cab, thereby making it possible-to materiallyshorten the cab, and where such construction is carried out an entrance opening into the Working space at 'the forward endof he tender, is located in the side wall of the tender. nearthe forward end thereof.
In carrying out In invention I make'use of cast metal end fra es of the type disclosed in Patents-No. 92?,705, dated August 3, .1909, and No. 917,716, dated April 6, 1909,
which end frames are rigidly fixed to the underframes of the tender and locomotive cab and applied directly to said end frames are Patented Dec. 15, 1914.
diaphragmscomposed of wallplates and face plates, which latter serve as p ints of attachment for the folding or bellows portions of the diaphragms.
To the above purposes my invention con- 'sists in certain novel features of construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
Referring by numerals to the accom anymg drawings, 10 designates the underfi'ame of the locomotive tender, the same being of any suitable construction but preferably cast in a single piece and positioned upon the ends of this underframe and fixed thereto in any suitable manner are vertically disposed one piece end frames 11, the same being in skeleton form and of the type disclosed in end frames are preferably provided with rearwardly projecting brackets 12 which ex.- i
tend inwardly from the end sill of the ends of the underframe and bear against shoulders on the latter, which shoulders are preferably:
provided by the formation of integral'lugs, such as 13, on top of the side sills of the underframe.
The body of the tender comprises a suitable frame work located on the underframe between the end frames and arranged on 'said frame work are the usual double walls .to.the exterior of said front endframe b e-.
tween theuprights at the sides of the door opening and; the corner posts or uprights is an end wall plate or sheet 18, the same being.
preferably formed of heavy sheet metal.
Arranged 'a short distance away from the plate or wallat theforward end of the ten j der is an inverted U-shaped diaphragm face plate 19, the same being supported in the usual mannerupon buffer-stems 20 and ar- 75 thepatents. hereinbefore referred to. The lower portions of the corner posts of these .Wall or diaphragm plate 18 is a diaphragm the tender body ranged between this face plate and the end bellows or flexible we 21.
, Formed in the side wall of the tender body and at the forward end thereof is a door opening 22 opening into the working space 23 at the forward end of the coal pocket in the tender, such arrangement providing an entrance and exit opening for the trainmen who are usually stationed upon the locomotive and tender. Located upon the tender body immediately below this door is a series of steps 24 and arranged on 22 are hand rails 25. The one piece cast metal end frame 26 which is located at the rear end of the locomotive cab is provided with a centrally arranged door opening 27 corresponding with the opening 17 at the forward end of the-tender and applied to the exterior of this end frame 26 is an end wall plate 28 preferably of sheet metal. Located a short distance-from this end wall or plate is an inverted U-shaped diaphragm face plate'29 which is supported in the usual the same being-supported upon suitable 'stems- 34 'and arranged between this face plate and the plate 32 is a diaphragm bel- Iowsor flexible wall 35. This portion of the diaphragm at the rear end of the tender is adapted to cooperate with a correspondin ieldin diaphragm portion 36 upon the fo v a'rd e151 of the first car to the rear of thetender.
The one piece end frames applied to the tender underframe and the underframe of a locomotive cab combined with the heavy sheet metal plates which form the end walls of the tender and cab rovide solid substantial structures at hot ends of the tender and at the rear end of the cab, which structures are particularly adapted to resist end shocks and crushing stresses imparted Ito the ends of the tender and locomotive,
thus materially decreasing the tendency of I the cars to telescope during collisions. -"By locating the entrance and exit opening for the trainmen inthe side of the tender it --is possible --to materially shorten the locomotive cab and by providing the diaphragm bellows between the forward end of the tender and cab the trainmen while at their stations are to a considerable extent pro- Inclement weather. I
tected from dust and cin'ders and against 5. f
to the sides of the opening.
I It will be readily understood that minor changes in the size, form and construction of the various parts of my improved locomotive tender and cab construction can be made and substituted for those herein shown and described, without departing from the spirit of my invention, the scope of which isset forth in the appended claims.
I claim:
