patent 69Min.
WILLIAM M. WARREN, 0F WATERTOWN, CONNECTICUT.
Letters Patent No. 111,995, dated February 21, 1871.
IMPROVEMENT IN SASH-HOLDERS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters .Patent and making part of the same.
' Watertown, in thecounty ofLitchtield and State oi'Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in Sash' Fastener; and I do hereby declare the following, when ,taken in connection with the accompanying drawing and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exactdescription ot' the saine, and which said drawing constitutes part ot' this speciczv tion, and represents in Figure 1 a perspective view, and in Figures 2 and 3 vertical central sections to illustrate the operation.
This invention relates to a device for locking the sashes ot' windows,sucl1 as are balanced with weights in any desired position that is to prevent the lower sash from being raised higher, or the upper sash lowered from any point where they may be respectively set; and
rlhe invention consists in the arrangement of a lock ing lever combined with a cam and removable spindle, which operate to withdraw the lever and hold it withdrawn or to allow the action of the lever to lock the sash.
A is the faceplate.
B, the case, which may be arranged either in the sash or window-frame, as preferred.
G is a lever hung within the case, one arm of which projects, as at c, forming the nose of the locking-bolt inclined upon one surface, and so as to form a shoulder upon the other.
D is a cam, supported in the case, and. provided with a spindle, E, and a knob, F, or other device for turning the spindle, so that by turning the spindle the cam will also be turned.
A portion of the cam D is cut away, which allows the upper arm a of' the lever to fall onto the earn, and the nose ofthe bolt to throw ont, as denoted in fig. 2; but by turning the cam to the position seen in iig. 3, the boltis drawn in and-retained in position until t-l'le cam is returned; then a spring, f, will throw ont the lever; hence when it is desired to move the window or leave it free to be moved, turn the cam to the position denoted in lig. 3, and when desired to loclrfthe sash turn the cani to theposition in tig. 2, and the bolt will fly ont into a notch formed for -it in the sash or frame as the case may be. 4
`The position denoted in the drawing is for the "lock upon the upper sash, which will prevent the sash from being drawn down below the point at which it is set nntil the cam be turned to move the lever. For the lower sash the case should be reversed, so as to prevent the sash from being Vthrown np.
I claim as my invention- The hereimdescribed sash-lock, consisting of' the lever C, one arm of which is formed into a projecting nose, c, the other arm a extending to a cani, D, which. lsaid cam is provided with a spindle, F, for operating the same, and the lever provided 'with a spring, f. to throw the npse of the lever outward from the case,
the whole being constructed and arranged in the Inanner herein described.
