Application filed March 16, 1914. Serial No. 824,946.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLIFFORD V. BATES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Match-Box Holders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in pocket match-box holders of the type wherein an entire match-box is retained within the holder. With the introduction of the small match-box upon the market there has been a large demand for some suit able form of holder' in order that the matchbox may be carried by a person without liability of crushing the box or having the box proper slip from the cover and thereby release the matches.
l/Vhile the small match-boxes are approximately of a uniform size, nevertheless, there is a slight variation and, consequently, any holder having rigid sides will not receive and hold match-boxes of slightly varying sizes. Furthermore, match-boxes have one or both sides thereof impregnated with a material upon which to strike the match and in order that such material may be accessible a portion of one side of the holder is cut away. In striking a match upon the box it 'is desirable to have the entire impregnable material exposed in order that a full sweep may be given to the match along the impregnated surface.
In order to overcome the objections to the rigid type of matchbox holder, I have devised a holder capable of accommodating itself to match boxes of slightly varying dimensions; a holder that will maintain the cover of the match box in fixed position but allow the box proper to be moved relative to its cover and holder, and lastly, to provide a holder permitting one side of the match box cover, which is impregnated, to be completely exposed.
My improved structure is shown in the accompanying drawing in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved holder with a match-box therein; Fig. 2 is a similar view to Fig. 1 with the cover of the holder in slightly raised position; Fig. 3 is a transverse section of Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section of Fig. 1; Fig. 5 is an enlarged sectional view of one end of Fig. 1l.
Referring now more particularly to the drawing my improved holder consists of the bottom 6, the side wall 7 and cover 8; the bottom (3 and side wall 7 being prefer'- ably formed integral. The cover 8 has a hinged connection with the side wall 7 by a series of hinge members 9, 10, 11, 1Q, 13 and 14 formed alternately upon the side wall and cover with the hinge pin 15 ex tending through the hinged sections. The hinged section 9 upon the side wall 7 is soldered to the hinge pin 15 and the hinged section 14 upon the cover is soldered to the hinge pin 15. rlhe spring hinge thus described forms no part of my invention ex'- cept in combination with the other elements since .it is a common hinge construction; a spring hinge being obtained by reason of the twisting action on the hinge pin 15 when the cover is raised.
The marginal edges of the bottom 6 are inturned as `shown at 16 and the marginal edges of the cover are inturned as shown at 17, thereby forming flanges.
The ordinary match box as shown in Fig. Q consists of the outer member, the cover 18 and the slidable box portion 19. The flanges 16 and 17 overlie not only the sides of the box 18 to prevent lateral movement of the box relative to the holder, but said flanges also overlie the ends of the cover 18 to prevent longitudinal movement of the box 18 relative to the holder. It will be noticed, however, that the flanges 1G and 17 at the ends of the bottom 6 and cover 8 extend inwardly only a suflicient distance to engage the ends of the box cover and thereby permit the sliding of the box 19 from either end of the holder. The cover 8 is normally held against the top of the match box cover 1S by the spring action of the hinge pin 15 thereby exerting a slight pressure upon the top of the match box to prevent accidental slipping of the match box 19 from the holder. It will be noted that the entire impregnated surface Q0 along one side ofthe cover 18 is exposed to permit the match being properly struck against the impregnated surface and furthermore permitting all of the impregnated surface to be used.
It is of course obvious that the flanges 16 and 17 need not extend continuously along the edges of the bottom and cover of the holder as a plurality of Hanges properly spaced would accomplish practically the same result and, therefore, without confining myself to the specific details of construction shown in this respect.
I claim: side Wall, and a spring for normally form l. A match box holder comprising a base ing said cover toward said base and to 10 and one side Wall, a cover hinged to said thereby retain the match box Within said side wall, a spring for normally forcing said holder.
I cover toward said base, and inturned mar- CLIFFORD V. BATES.y
