UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH IIACKETT, OF LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY.
IMPROVEMENT IN FIRE-PLACES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 111,929, dated February 21, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH HAOKETT, of Louisville, in the county of Jefferson and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and Improved Tile or Fire-Back for Fire-Places; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a face or front view of my improved tile, showing it applied. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section of the same, taken on the plane of the line was, Fig.1. Fig. 3 is an inverted plan view of the tile.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention relates to those tiles for firehacks which are made in a single piece; and consists in the peculiar form and mode of construction, which will he first described, and then clearly pointed out in the claim.
A in the drawing represents my improved tile for fire-places. It is made of metal, clay, or other suitable material. Its shape is clearly shown in the drawing. Its lower edge is fiat,
to fit upon the flat support provided for it, and its body is of elliptic form, concave in front and convex in back. The upper edge is beveled to form part of the throat a of the fireflue, as shown in Fig. 2. This is important, as the necessity of setting the tiles in mortar or clay is dispensed with. The oval form of tile forms at once back and ends of the same, and causes such a reflection of the heat that from the ends as well as back the rays are thrown into the room, and not used up by a wasteful counter-reflection.
By doing away with the joints between the back and end pieces a more even degree of radiation is also obtained.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent+- The tile A, combining the following features of construction: first, thick on top, whereon is received the largest portion of heated gases, to prevent cracking second, circularly curved on its outer face, to cover the throat of the flue; and, third, ovally recessed on the inner face, to retard the gases, complete the combustion, and evolve a maximum of heat before it reaches the flue, all for the purpose of forming an improved fire-back for stoves.
JOSEPH HACKETT.
