To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GUY E. ])AV.IDSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Filley, in the county of Gage and State of Nebraska, have invented new and useful Improvements in Spark-Arresters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in spark arr-esters and has particular application to a device of the class described for arresting the sparks issuing from the furnaces of locomotive boilers.
In carrying out the present invention, it
. is my purpose to provide a spark arrester which will embody among other features a series of baffle plates arranged within the smoke box of the locomotive in such manner that the products of combustion will be carried through a tortuous path previous to being discharged into the atmosphere whereby cinders and the like will be arrested and the gases permitted to flow freely through the smoke stack into the surrounding atmosphere.
It is also my purpose to provide a spark arrester of the type set forth whereby cinders and analogous matter issuing from the furnace of a locomotive boiler will be effec tively arrested and trapped within the smoke box out of the path of the products of combustion and whereby such cinders and the like may be readily and conveniently removed from the smoke box when such is desired. Furthermore, I aim to provide a device of the type set forth which will embrace the desired features of simplicity, efficiency and durability, which may be installed and maintained at a minimum expense and which will operate effectively under all conditions. 1
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts here. inafter set forth in and falling within the scope of the claims.
In the accompanying drawings; Figure 1 is a sectional view through the smoke box of a locomotive equipped with a spark arrester constructed in accordance with the present invention. Referring now to the accompanying drawings in detail, 1 designates the smoke box of a locomotive boiler, such box being of any suitable or preferred construction and, adjacent to the forward end thereof, is equipped with thousual smoke stack Secured to the inner end wall of the smoke box 1 in advance of the fire tubes leading from the combustion chamber of the furnace a ballle plate 3 inclined downwardly and adapted to direct the products of com bastion flowing into the smoke box downwardly toward the bottom of the latter. Arranged within the smoke box 1 a suitable distance in advance of the ballle plate 3 is a bafllc plate a l inclined in a direction similar to that of the plate 3. This plate 4n has the marginal edges at the sides and bottom thereof bent upon themselves as at 5 and fastened through the medium of rivets (3 with the adjacent walls of the smoke box, while theupper edge of such plate terminates below the top of the smoke box and has secured thereto the lower edge of a metallic sheet 7 perforated as at 8 and having the upper edge thereof flanged as at 9 and riveted or otherwise connected with the top wall of the smoke box. In advance of the ballle plate 1. is asecond ballle plate 10 spaced apart from the first plate and havingthc top andside edges flanged as at 11 and riveted or otherwise connected with the top and side walls of the smoke box, while connected with the lower edge of the halile plate 10 and depending therefrom is a meperforated as at 13 and having the bottom and side flanged as at 14: and riveted or otherwise connected with the adjacent walls of the smoke box. A ballle plate 15 is disposed in advance of the plate 10 and has the side and bottom edges thereof flanged as at 16 and bolted or riveted to the adjacent walls of the smoke box, while connected with the top edge of theplate 15 is the lower edge of a metallic sheet 17 perforated as at 18 and having the top and side edges thereof flanged as at 19 and riveted to the adjacent walls of the smoke box. These ballle plates 4. 10 and 15 are concave-convex in cross section as clearly illustrated in the drawings and it will be noted that the metallic sheets carried by the plates are disposed alteredges thereof precise details of construction nately at the top and bottom of the smoke box. By means of this arrangement the products of combustion passing into the smoke box from the fire tubes in communication with the combustion chamber of the furnace are carried over and under the baille plates successively, the perforated metallic sheets trapping cinders and the like matter and permitting the smoke and other gases to pass through the smoke box and into the surrounding atmosphere by way of the smoke stack In order that the cinders may be removed from the smoke box so that the latter may be cleaned when necessary the bottom wall of the smoke box is formed with a number of openings 20 in advance of the lower end of each batlle and arranged transversely of the bottom of the smoke box. Depending from the bottom of the smoke box at opposite sides of each opening therein are guide flanges 21 and supported by such flanges below each opening is a pan 22 capable of be ing removed and replaced. By means of this construction, it will be seen that the pans will catch and hold the cinders and other foreign matter trapped by the battle plates, while such pans may be readily and easily removed and dumped. Furthermore, when the pans are removed brushes or similar tools may be inserted in the smoke box to clean the ballile plates.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction, mode of operation and manner of employing my invention will be readily apparent. It will be seen that I have provided aspark arrester which will be found especially useful in conjunction with the furnaces of locomotive boilers and whereby the sparks will be eifectively arrested within the smoke box and held therein until manually removed.
ll hile I have herein shown and described one preferred form of my invention by way of illustration, I wish it to be understood that I do not limit or confine myself to the scribed and delineated, and modification and variation may be made within the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit of the invention.

1. In a spark arrester, the combination with the smoke box of a locomotive boiler, of baffle plates disposed within said box and spaced apart and disposed in. the path of Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing herein do the products of combustion, and a perforated metallic sheet carried by one end of each plate and arranged at the end of the plate opposite from that of the adjacent plate whereby the products of combustion will take a tortuous path previous to issuing from the smoke box.

In a spark arrester, the combination with the smoke box of a locomotive boiler, of baflle plates disposed within said box and spaced apart and disposed in the path of the products of combustion, a perforated metallic sheet carried by one end of each plate and arranged at the end of the plate opposite from that of the adjacent plate whereby the products of combustion will take a ton tuous path previous to issuing from the smoke box, and means whereby the trapped cinders and the like may the smoke box.
