ATTACHMENT FOR WALL-TELEPHONES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 24, 1914:.
Application filed June 15, 1914. SerialNm 845,200
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ANNA SHERIDAN ELLSWORTH, a citizen of theqUnited States, residing at Oakes, in the county of Dickey and State of North Dakota, a new and useful Attachment for lVall- Telephones, of which the following, is a specification.
This invention relates to telephone attachments, its object being to provide a support for the receiver of a telephone, the said attachment being especially designed for use in connection with a wall telephone and beingadapted to hold the receiver at the ear of the user of the telephone so that the necessity of holding the receiverat the ear with one hand is avoided.
A further object is to provide a receiver supporter which allows the receiver to be suspended from the hook asordinarily, when not in use.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in theprecise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings the preferred form of the invention has been shown.
In said drawings :Figure 1 is a front elevation of a wall telephone having the present improvements combined therewith.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation, the position of the parts, when the receiver is supported in active position, being indicated by dotted lines. Fig. 3 is an enlarged section through one of the joints of the support, said section being taken on the line A.l3 Fig. 2.,
Fig. L is a plan view of the attachment with the parts in the positions shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
Referring to the figures by characters of reference 0 designates a wall telephone of the usual or any preferred form, the same being provided with the usual hook D designed to support the receiver E.
The attachment constituting the present invention includes a supporting strip 1 secured in any suitable manner to the bottoin portion of the telephone and extendhave invented ing laterally therefrom, the outer end of this strip being provided with an ear .2 to which is pivotally connected the lower end of an arcuate link 3. A series of these links is provided, each link being arranged op positely toflthe next adjoining link thereabove and the upper one of the links being pivotally connected to a straight longitudinally slottedstrip 4 on which an extension strip 5 is slidably mounted, this extension strip being provided with lugs 6 adapted to slide within the slot in the strip 4. An ear 7 is extended laterally from one end of the extension strip 5 and is pivor secured to a clamp 9. This clamp can be of any desired construction and the form illustrated in the drawings is made up of hingedly connected members 10 and 11 adapted to be placed about the receiver E and to be secured in position by means of,
obtained by using screws 13 as pivots and,
by tightening these screws, the links and other parts pivotally connected can be caused to bind upon each other. fer-red, however, a spring washer 1-ican be mounted on each of the pivot devices 13, this washer being designed to bind the pivotally connected elements together with practically the same degree of pressure at all times andirres motive of any wear which may take place. Consequently, when the receiver E is removed from the hook D, it will be supported by the attachment in any position to which it may be moved.
Then it is desired to use the attachment, the strip 1 is attached to the bottom portion of the telephone and the clamp 9 is secured about the receiver E. Arm 8 is then swung relative to the extension strip 5 until: it is brought to a substantially horizontal position whereupon the receiver E is placed on the hook D so as to be supported thereby. With the receiver thus positioned, the links constituting the main portion of the attach If preotally connected to an arm 8formed with j ment will be supported close to and at one side of the telephone where they will not be undesirably conspicuous. When it is desired to use the receiver E, it is lifted from the hook D as ordinarily and is then drawn outwardly while, at the same time, the strips 4 and 5 are adjusted relative to each other and the arm 8 is swung upon its pivotal connection with the ear 7 so that the receiver can thus be brought to position opposite the ear of the user of the telephone. By
' reason of the fact that all of the joints included in the attachment are sufficiently tight to support the receiver in any position to which it may be moved, it will be obvious that as soon as this adjustment of the receiver to the ear of the user has been effected, it will stay in such position until it has been moved back to the hook D.
What is claimed is A receiver supporting attachment for telephones, including an attaching strip, a series of arcuate links pivotally connected at their ends to each other, the lower one of said links being pivotally connected to said extending therefrom, an extensible connection between said arm and the upper one of the links, said connection being pivotally attached to the arm and link, all of the pivotal connections of the attachment being adapted to bind the engaged parts of the attachment together with sufiicient pressure to hold the receiver in any position to which it may be adjusted.
' In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
