To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ;AUSTIN citizen of the United States, residing at Brushton, in the county of Franklin and State of New York, haveinvented a new and useful Thill-Coupling; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such: as
will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This inventlon relates to an improved thill coupling.
An object of the invention is to provide an improved coupling between the thill or the rear curved portion of a shaft and the forward axle comprising certain improved feabe subjected to alterations, falling within the scope of what is claimed.
The invention comprises further features and combination of parts, as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed.
In the drawings :Figure 1 is a view in perspective of the thill coupling. Fig. 2 is a sectional view through Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view. Fig. 4 is a view showing the various parts of the coupling in perspective and disassembled.
Referring to the drawing, 1 designates the usual axle and 2 a conventional form of bolster, while 3 denotes the clips, and 1 the plate to receive the threaded shanks of the clips, on which shanks suitable nuts 5 are arranged to hold the clips in place, thereby clamping the axle and the bolster together.
One of the clips 3 is provided with laterally extending lugs 6 having apertures 7,
in the wall of each of which a notch 8 is constructed. These notches 8 are a little out of alinement or registration and extend in a direction toward the clips. The thill 9 has secured uponits under surface a plate 10, and on its upper surface a second plate 11, bolts 12 extending through the plate 11, the thill, and the plate 10 and provided with nuts 13, to hold said parts together.
The plate 10 at one end terminates in a cylindrical sleeve or collar 14, the inner wall of the bore 15 of which is provided with a groove 16 which extends at an angle to the length of the bore, and one end of the groove registers with one of the notches 8, while the other end registers withthe opposite notch. lindrical sleeve or collar, so as to connect the lugs of one of theclips and the plate 10. One end of this pin has an angularportion 19. Extending slightly angularly 1011i} 5 of alinement with the pin is an elongated rib 20. The other end portion of the pin is provided with a lug 21 which is alined with the rib. This lug, when inserting the pin, passes through the notches of said apertures and through the groove and assumes a position adjacent the outer face of the lug next to the other end of the sleeve or collar opposite and beyond the angled end of the pin, so that when the thill is moved to a position shown in Fig. 1, said lug assumes a position out of registration with the notch, in which case endwise movement of the pin is prevented. The lug 21 is not only alined with the rib, but is spaced apart from one end thereof so as to permit the thickness of one of the lugs to pass between the lug on the pin and the end of the rib. A corner 22 of the groove engages a slight longitudinal groove 23 of the pin, which groove23 is adjacent to and parallel to said rib. The rib comprises a pin, which is arranged adjacent to the pivot pin and has its angled ends 24 wedged in recesses 25 with apertures in registration with each other, a thill plate having a cylindricalhollow sleeve upon the inner circumference of the bore OfWlllCh an elongated groove is provided, said apertures havlng notches upon their inner circumferences, a pivot pin having an angular end at one end, and a radial lug at the other adapted to pass through said notches and said groove, said pivot pin having an elongated rib spaced apart between said lug and said angular end adapted to be received in said groove thereby rotating with the sleeve or collar, said lug extending from the pivot pin in a direction at right angles to the angular end, so that When the pivot pin is rotated With the sleeve, said lug will assume a position out of alinement with one of the notches, said groove and said notches being in registration When first inserting the pivot pin and extending at an come displaced incase the rib and the lug 20 are in registration ivith said. notches, and a groove in the pivot pin adjacent the rib to receive acorner of the groove.
