JOHN H. HUHN, OF FAIRMONT, WEST VIRGINIA, ASSIGNOR 'OF ONE-HALF TO JOHN a STEEL, OF BABRACKVILLE, WEST VIRGINIA.
HATCHET.
Specfication of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 24, 1914.
Application filed Au ust 2, 1913. Serial No. 7s2,55o.
To all whom it may conce'm: i
Be it known that I, J OHN H. HUHN, citizen of the United States, residing at Fairmont, in the county of Marion and State of West Virginia, have invented certain 'new and useful Improvements in Hatchets,
of which the following is a specification.
My invention relatcsto auimprovement in' hat'chets wherein the blade portion is adapted to be rotated on its horizontal axis to any desired angle, thus making the tool -tion Will .be suitably'assembled tothe haft of the hatchet so as to permitof its being adjusted at different angles; second, to provide suitable means,' such 'as rubber cushions, which ,will frictionally engage and hold in position and against accidental, rotation, the blade of the tool; and will also relieve the handle of the tool from excessive shocks or concussion when used 'for chopping or hammering.
'Still another object is to so construct'such a tool, that it maybe assembled and disasiseinbled with comparative ease and without the use of'any special* tools.
In the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this applcatiom l have illus trated a preferred form of my invention, similar reference characters referring to similar parts throughout the following vewsz I u 'Figure 1 is an elevation with the'blade shown in its usual vertical position, or in the same plane with the handle, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section of the devic shown i-n Fig, 1.
The' reference characters 3 4, 5, and 6, designate respectively the baft, poll, blade, and' handle of my improved hatchet@ 7 and 8 designate trunco-conical rubber washers or Shock absorbers adapted to seat in the opposed recessed extensions, and 3, ofthe haft 3, their outer faces protruding be -sond the edges of said extensions, 'and registering with the recessed faces 4, and of the poll and blade respectively. 'The portion of the blade 5, that lie adjacent the haft, s enlarged, as at 5, and cxtending .centrally from this enlarged portion and' permanently Secured thei-eto, is a longitudinally disposed spindle 5?, which passes centrall through the members, S 3, and 7, and
is threaded at its outer end to egage the poll l, which is internally threaded receive said threaded spindle.
The haft, 3,* is provided with.- a tubular shank 3 extending at right angles to the blade and poll, and' adaptcd to receive the handle G, which is preferably wedge at F, to
shaped: the shock absorhingmeans permitting of this Construction, which in ordinary practice is not deemed advisblc owing to the tendency of the shani( 3 to crack orbreak off from the haft, dhe to the shock of the ordinary hatchet when in operation.
It will be obvious that when the poll-tis screwed up on the spindle 5% the ctfect will be to compress the tapering ubber washers them laterally; thus setting up'a fricti'on'al resrstanoe' which will efl'ectively hold the blade 5 at any an le to which'it was preentirely unscrewed from said spind'le. It' will also be apparent that by arranging the rubber washers between the poll 4 and the haft 3, and betweentheblade and' said haft, that the shocks or inpacts incident to the use of either poll or lade, willbe more or less absorbed by both of said washers.
lVhile I have not shown' the blade 5 set in any plane at an 'angle to .that of the handle, it will be readily understood that said blade may be `adjustedat an angle incident to the rotati'on of its spindle 5. in the bearings provided thercfor in the haft 3 and the washers 7, 8. The advantages in-.
-7, 8, longitudinally, and thereby expand i viously set when t e poll waslpartially or seated in said alining -sockets, a poll-member 'engagng one of sad cushos, a btmember engzgng the opposite cushon, and
a spindle extending through said cshions 5 and sting bit members.
In testimony whereof I afx my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
JOHN H. HUHN. 'witnesses:
and connecting said poll and M. R. MUSGRDVE,
A. Hooo.
