Zara? Z THE NORRIS PETERS c0. PHOTO-LIT)!" WILLIAM L. MARBERRY, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
COAL-SHIFTER.
Application filed April 3, 1914.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, l/VILLIAM L. MAR- BERRY, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, in the city of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Goal-Shifters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in apparatus for shifting coal in tenders of locomotives and comprises means whereby either compressed air or steam may be utilized for moving the coal from the tender toward the furnace door of the engine.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of a tender to which my invention is applied. Fig. 2 is a sectional view online 2-2 of Fig.1. Fig. 8 isa sectional view on line 3-3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a top plan view of a slight modification. Fig. 5 is a central longitudinal sectional view through the modified form, and Fig. 6 is a sectional view on line 6-6 of Fig. 5.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates a tender which may be of any size or shape, and B are water tanks, one upon each side and between which is a space for the reception of the fuel.
Positioned adjacent to one end of the tender is a tank D adapted to contain either compressed air or steam under pressure and in the form shown in Fig. 1 a pipe E leads from said tank D at an inclination in an inclosed passageway F which, at its lower end, is connected to branching pipes H, each of which is provided with slots I, shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings, and through which either the air or steam under pressure is forcibly ejected, said branching pipes being positioned adjacent to the floor of the space containing the fuel.
Rods K. are pivotally connected to links L which control valves, one positioned in each of said pipes, and series of levers, each of which is designated by letter O, are piv- Specification of Letters Patent.

otally mounted upon pins J and each lever is pivotally connected to a rod K, forming means whereby one or another or all of the levers together may be operated as it is desired to cause the compressed air or steam to forcibly exert a pressure against the fuel and cause the same to be driven forward toward the engine. Said branching pipes are protected by means of the hoods R which extend over said pipes, as shown clearly in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings. The space containing the rods K is protected by the housing T so that the fuel will not interfere with the movements of the same.
In Figs. 4, 5 and 6 of the drawings, I have shown a slight modification of the manner of arranging the pipes, in which the bottom Q, of the fuel chamber is disposed at an inclination to facilitate the feeding of the coal, and Q designates the pipe leading from the tank I) and is provided with laterally extending pipes Q and hoods M project from the inclined bottom and over said branching pipes Q Connected to the branching pipes are the valves (1*, the stems of which are connected to the rods Q, as shown clearly in Figs. 4 and 5, and to each rod is connected a lever Q pivotally mounted upon the shaft Q The operation of the invention in the preferred and modified forms will be readily understood and is as follows: The lever controlling the branching pipes which are nearest to the furnace of the engine may be operated to start the fuel near one end of the chamber, after which, as the fuel is fed forward, the other levers in succession may be operated to feed the entire quantity of the fuel forward, thus dispensing with the manual labor usually employed for feeding the furnace.
hat I claim to be new is:
1. A fuel feeding apparatus comprising, in combination with a tender adapted to contain fuel, a series of pipes having slots in the walls thereof and positioned near the bottom of the tender, a tank adapted to contain fluid under pressure and having connection with said pipes, valves in said pipes, and lever-operated mechanism for actuating the valves, as set forth.
2. In combination with a fender, a tank designed to contain a fluid under pressure, a pipe leading from the tank and having branching pipes extending horizontally therefrom adjacent to the floor of the fender,
Gopies of this patent may be obtained for late the passage of fluid into the branching pipes, a rod pivotally connected to a stern of each valve, pivotal levers, one connected 15 to each rod, and a housing for said rods, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
