UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM MARSH, OF WATERFORD, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPRVEMENT 1N BUTTER-Tues, sw.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 111,758, dated February 14, 1871.
To all whom it 'may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM MARSH, of Vaterford, in the county of Erie, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Fastening for Butter-Tub Covers, and
.for covers for other casks and packages; and
I do hereby declare that the following is a full, true, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in providing, at some point on the stave of a cask, a device in the form of a hook, which can be made to clasp the cover of the package and hold it rmly down.
The manner in which I accomplish this result is as follows: I construct a hook in the form of a right angle, with a screw cut ou the long ends, as seen in Figure 3 in the accompanying drawing, and also shown at c in all the other iigures. The cover ot' the package (marked A in the drawing) I then construct with notches cut into the rim or periphery of the same to a depth equal to about one-half the thickness of the stave or other material of which the cask or package is constructed. These notches are seen in Figs. 1 and 2, and are marked B. As to the number of these notches it is not material. I then lay the cover onto the package, and mark the points where they come on the top edge of the tub or package. There I insert the hooked screw, screwing it down until it presses on the cover, and then turning the heads in toward the ccnter of the head or cover, as seen in Fig. 1.
This, it will be seen,.will hold the cover firmly down.
When it is desired to remove the cover of the package, the heads are turned out as seen in Fig. 2, and then the cover is easily lifted off, because of the slots or notches B B B B.
It may often occur that this form of fastener shall be wanted on packages the material ot' which is so thin that the inserting of a screw, as above described, will be impracticable. In that case a hooked fastener substantially the same as the one above described may be attached to the outer or inner side of the stave, by mea-11's of a staple or staples driven through the stave, or by some equally simple device.
What I claim as my invention is as follows:
The combination of the hook c, tub B, and cover A, constructed as shown and described.
