WHIFFLETREE-HOOK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 17, 1914.
Application filed April 27, 1914. Serial No. 834,723.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J AMES MGCLELLAND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Carson City, in the county of Montcalm and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful IVhiflletree-Hook; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to an improved Whittle-tree hook.
It is an object of the present invention to simplify, improve and render more efficient, the construction of the whiflle-tree hook patented January 1, 1907, No. 840,152, in the name of James McClelland.
One of the features of the invention is to construct the cuff of the hook with a pair of lugs, instead of the rib 7 in said patent, and between which lugs one of the jaws of the whiffle-tree hook is pivoted, said lugs being braced or reinforced relative to the stationary jaw of the hook by means of a short bar, thereby affording a more rigid and firmer substantial structure than disclosed in said patent.
Another feature of the invention is that the stationary jaw has a segmental rib, partially overlapping the pivoted jaw, and together with the stationary jaw acting to withstand all the strain and draft.
In practical fields the details of construction may necessitate alterations, falling within the scope of what is claimed.
The invention comprises further features and combinations of parts, as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed.
In the drawings :-Figure 1 is a perspective view of one end of a Whittle-tree with the improved hook fastened thereon. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the hook open. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4L is a sectional view on line 4-4 of Fig. 1.
Referring more especially to the drawings, 1 designates a whiftle-tree, the end of which is cut away, as shown at 2, forming a shoulder 3 and leaving a contracted portion 4, which is inserted in the hollow cufl' or cup shaped casting 5, said casting being held on the whiffie-trec end by the screw 6. Located on the circumference of the casting is a pair of cars or lugs 7, through which a pivot pin 8 extends. Pivoted upon the pin 8 is the pivoted whiflle-tree hook member 9 having the curved portion 10, which registers with the curved hook portion 11 of the immovable whiflle-tree hook member 12, which is made integral with the cuff casting 5. The whilile-tree hook member 12 is braced or reinforced relative to one of the lugs 7 by the bar 1.3. The curved hooked portion 11 is provided with a segmental lip or rib 14, which partially overlies the curved hooked portion 10 of the pivoted member 9. This lip or rib 14 together with the curved hooked portion 11 of the stationary member 12 withstands the strain or draft entirely. thereby relieving all the strain from the pivoted member. Projecting upwardly from the movable jaw, and downwardly from the extremity of the hooked portion 11 of the stationary jaw are lugs 15 and T16, constituting means for preventing the ring of a trace from accidental displacement.
The invention having been set forth, what is claimed as new and useful is A Whittle-tree hook comprising a cuff shaped casting, a jaw formed integral therewith, and terminating at its outer portion in a curved hook, a pair of spaced apart lugs formed integral with said casting, a bar formed integral with one of said lugs and integral with said jaw, thereby reinforcing and bracing said lug and jaw, a second jaw pivoted between said lugs and having an outer curved hooked portion, adapted to register with the curved hooked portion of the first jaw, said curved hooked portion of the first jaw having an integral segmental lip overlying the curved hooked portion of the pivoted second jaw.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
J AIVIES MCCLELLAND.
