SCBAPER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 17, 1914.
Application filed December 18. 1913. Serial No. 806,588.
To all whom. it may concern Be it known that we, CHARLES CHILD and ALEXANDER H. Kala, citizens of the United States, both residin at \Vallace, in the county of Calaveras an State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Scrapers; and we do declare the following to be a clear, full, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference. being had to the accompan ing drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a. part of this application.
This invention relates to improvements in scrapers, the object of the invention being to produce a scraper used for gradin and leveling which can be wheel mounted and controlled to perform its functions in an effective manner without over exertion on the part of the stock' or theman operating the same. i Y
A further object of the invention is to produce a scraper which can be filled and emptied easily and rapidly orworked at different positions according as it is to be used for scraping or grading.
Av still further object of the invention is to produce a simple and inexpensive device and yet one which will be exceedingly effective for the purposes-for which it is designed.
These objects, we accomplish by means of such structure and relative arrangement of the parts as will fully appear by a perusal of the following speci cation and claims.
On the drawings, similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views.
Figure 1 is a top plan view of the complete scraper. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on a line Y--Y of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a fragmentary view, partly in sectlon, showin the connecting means of the scraper bow with the balance of the structure. Fig. 5 is a sectional view of a spring controlled catch. Fig. 6 is a sectional view taken relatively on a line XX of Fig. 5.
Referring now more particularly to the characters of reference on the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the scraper bowl which is fiat on its bottom as at 2 and has its upper side and ends shaped in a curved manner into a substantial ellipse as at 3, the front end of the bowl being provided with a cuttin edge 1.
'lhe numeral 5 designates a disk bolted to the member 1 on each end by bolts 6, each disk 5 having a series of projecting circular bearing members 7, 8 and 9 of varying dimensions. Turnably mounted on each of the members 7 is a drag bar 10 projecting to the front of the bowl 1 and having a cross brace bar 11 and connecting eyes 12 to which may be connected the draft means. Turnably mounted on the members 8 are the free ends of a frame 13 which projects to the rear of the bowl 1 and is provided with a cross bar 14 in which are journaled a pair of supporting swiveled wheels 15. A beam 16 is suitably connected to the membore 13 and 1 1 and carries the drivers seat 17. Turnably mounted on each member 9 is a bracket 18 which projects to the immediate rear of the bowl 1 and where they are provided with bent ends 19 projecting between which is a handle member 20 riveted thereto by rivets 21, such rivets also securing to the members 19 and 20 a guide member 22 slidable in which is a latch 23 connected by a link 24 with an operating handle 25 on the outer end of the handle member 20. Said handle member 20 at its outer end is provided with a slidable loop 26 for the purpose of receiving a rope 27 ,ifdesired, for a purpose as will presently appear. The said link 24 rojects into the slot 22 of the slotted aide 20 where it is connected with the said atch 23, there being a s ring 28 interposed between the latch 23 an the bottom of the slot 22* to hold the said latch 23 in normal osition. \Vhen in normal position, this atch 23 projects into a catch 29 on the rear of the bowl 1 to hold it in its fixed position as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. \Vhen said latch 23 is in the catch 29, this locks the bowl in rigid scraping position and then when it is filed with earth and it is desired to empty the same, the handle 25 is operated to pull the latch 23 out of the catch 29 and then since the bowl 1 is turnably mounted in the various members described and at a point near its front end, when it is released, the blade 4 engages the dirt and acts as the load to turn the bowl on its fulcrum point to inverted position to empty it and then when it has been emptied, it will turn on its curved portion 3 completel around and back intc normal loading posltion when the latch 23 will again engage the catch 29 and hold it If the entire load is not to be em tied in one spot but is to be s read along or gradin purposes, the ban le member 20 is lifted which will tilt the bowl to any degree desired for the purpose of spreading the dirt. Also for gradin purposes, the rope 27 may be used to hold the handle member 20 at such position as will hold the bowl in a substantially perpendicular manner whereby the blade -i will grade and level the surface over which it is moved.
If it is desired to start the tilting operation of the bowl and handle without lifting it by the handle, we provide a pedal 30 on a crank 31 journaled on the member 16 and provided on the other side with a projecting roller 32 adapted, when the pedal 30 is operated. to en a e the handle member 20 and lift it until the bowl 1 is partly tilted and then the blade 4 will act as the load to tilt the same to such point as is desired where it will be held by the rope 27.
From the foregoing description it will readily be seen that we have )roduced such a device as substantially ful ls the objects of the invention as set forth herein.
While this specification sets forth in detail the present and preferred construction of the device, still in practice, such deviations from such detail may be resorted to as do not form a departure from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described our invention what we claim as new and useful and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A device of the character described comprising the combination with a wheel mountedframe, of a scraper bowl, 9. projecting bearin member on each side of said bowl, said bearin members being turnably mounted in said rame, another frame tumably mounted on said bearing members independently of said wheel mounted frame and of said scraper bowl, a handle member connected to said independent frame, a catch carried by said handle member and removably engageable with said scraper bowl, as described.
2. A device of the character described com rising a scraper bowl, a member fixed rigi ly to each end of said scraper bowl and each having a plurality of projecting circular bearings, a drag frame freely mounted on one pair of said bearings, a wheel mounted frame freely mounted on another pair of said bearings, a pair of brackets freely mounted on another pair of said bearings, a handle member on said brackets, a spring controlled latch on said handle member, and a catch on said bowl adapted to be engaged by said latch, as described.
3. A device of the character described comprising the combination with a wheel mounted frame, of a scraper bowl, projecting bearing members on said scraper bowl, such bearing members being turnable in such frame, another frame turnably mounted on said bearing members and independently of said wheel mounted frame and said scraper bowl, a handle on said frame, a catch on said handle removably engageable with said scraper bowl, and a pedal controlled lever on said wheel mounted frame engageable with said handle member to throw the same upwardly, as described.
In testimony whereof we aflix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
