To allwhom it may concern Be it known that I, WALTER C. CAR soN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have inventednew and useful Improvements in Thumb-Hole Cutting Machines, of which the following isa specification.
This invention relates to a machine for cutting thumb holes or finger I notches in the edges of paper box covers which fit over the box and extend downwardly to or very nearly to the bottom of said box, said thumb holes or notches being provided to enable the box to be readily grasped by the fingers when thecover is to be removed.
The object of the invention is to provide a'simple portable machine for the purpose designed; which may be moved about from place to place as desired, and which is adjustable to permit box covers of various sizes to be automatically fed to the, cutters for the purpose of cutting the thumb holes or finger notches therein in opposite sides thereof.
The invention further relates to an attachment which may be applied to the machine for-raising one side of the cover so that when fed to the machine said side will pass above a cutter and a thumb-hole or finger notch be cut in one side only when such is desired.

In the accompanying drawings, l5 indicates a table upon which the box covers are supported during the operation of punch ing the thumb-holes or finger notches, said table being mounted on upright legs 16 at each sideflthereof, provided with rollers 17 to run upon the floor so that the machine may be moved about from place .to place as desired.
Carried upon a. shelf :18" supported by brackets bolted to thelegs 16 at oneside of the machine is an'electric motor 19 provided with a belt pulley 20 on its shaft,
from which a belt 21 extends to and drives a. wheel 22 mounted on a short shaft 23 suitably carried by the. legs 16. Across the machine extend two horizontal shafts 24 and 25 turning in bearings carriedby the legs 16. On the'shaft 24 is mounted a large sprocket wheel 26 and a smaller sprocket wheel 27 fixed to the larger sprocket wheel, said large sprocket wheel beingrotated by a sprocket chain 28 passing around the larger sprocketwheel 26 and ,over a small sprocket wheel 29 on theshaft 23.. Asprocket chain 30 extends from the-smallsprocket wheel 27 to a large sprooket wheel 31 on the shaft 25, said'shaft being provided also with cams 52v and 33 by means of which the cover feeding andcover punching mechanisms are operated.
Projecting rearwardly from the table 15 for; a suitable distance is a rectangular frame 84 its rearmost end being supported by downwardly projecting braces 35 bolted at their lower ends to the legs 16. Ad-
justably mounted upon this frame and extending part wayover the table 15 is a runway 36 upon which the box covers are placed and along which they are fed to the punching mechanism. The runway 36, is formed of twoparallel angle bars 37, one side of each bar projecting inwardly and lying in a horizontal plane to form supports for the box top, the other sides of said bars extending in a vertical direction to which are riveted plates 38 that extend above said angle bars and are bent outwardly thereover to form guides to assist in properly placing the box covers in the runway. The angle bars 37 are adjustably secured to the frame 3% and table 15 by bolts or other means to permit lateral movement of said bars to adapt the runway to box covers of different sizes.
Below the center of the runway 36 and parallel therewith is a guide 39 extending from the table 15 to the rear end of the frame 3%. Within said guide is a longitudinally movable slide 40 from which depends a stem ell by means of which said slide is reciprocated. The slide 10 is formed with a longitudinal groove 42 therein open at the top and undercut at its sides as indicated at 43. Mounted to slide in said groove and project into the undercut portions is a block 1st through which passes a vertical bolt l5 that extends above the runway and is fitted with a hand nut 16. A pusher head t? rests upon the slide to and has a rearwardly projecting footpiece 48 through which the bolt 45 passes freely. Surrounding the bolt 45 is a sleeve 49 that extends from the foot-piece 4E8 upwardly to the hand nut ac. The head of the bolt 45 is seated in a cavity in the under side of the block A: and when the hand nut is turned in one direction, the under side of said nut presses upon said sleeve and the latter against the foot-piece 48 while the head of the nut tending to raise the block 14 clamps the head 4:7 firmly to the slide 410, so that said head will move with the slide. hen, however, the nut is loosened, said head may be adjusted to any position on the slide as may be needed to properly position the box covers relatively to the punching mechanism. If desired the bolt 45 may be shortened and the hand nut 16 bear directly on the foot piece 18.
At the forward end of the runway 36 is placed the punching mechanism which in the present instance comprises two cylindrical or other shaped punches 50 the opposite ends of each punch being mounted in bearings 51 within which said punches are adapted to slide. The bearings 51 of each punch are spaced apart and connected by a plate 52 said plate and bearings being mounted to slide transversely across the table in a slot 58, for the purpose of adjusting the punches to box covers of various sizes, and which, when suitably adjusted, are fixed in position by a screw clamp 54:
provided with a hand grip 55 that extends sufficiently high to be conveniently grasped by the hand. The bearings or supports 51 of the two punches 50 are seated suliiciently low in the slot 53 to bring the axes of said punches which are in line in the plane of the upper surface of the table 15 so that box covers resting upon the table 15 bebetween the punches will have semi-circular notches cut from their lower edges. Across each innermost bearing 51 close to its inner face in a direction perpendicular to the axes of the punches is made a slot 56 into which slots the sides of the box cover A enter, leaving a wall beyond each slot supporting the sides of said box covers against the thrust of said punch, and operating as a die during the operation of punching. The inner ends of the angle bars 37 which form the runway 36 are fastened each to one of the punch supporting frames formed of the bearings 51 and plate 52, said angle bars being further connected to the outer bearings 51 by means of braces 57 which extend over said outer bearings 51 and riveted or otherwise secured thereto, the braces extending rearwardly beyond the center of the runway and are there bolted to the angle bars. The horizontal portions of the angle bars 37 are bent upwardly at their forward ends as at 58 to guide the forward ends of the box covers over the inner bear ings 51 of the punches, said box ends being thus lifted over the bearings the sides of the boxes to be punched readily drop into the slots 56 in said bearings.
For the purpose of holding the boxes in position while punching the thumb notches, pressure is applied to the top of the box by means of resilient fingers 59, 60 mounted on a vertically movable bearing bar 61 extending transversely of the table 15 near its rear, ec ge, said bar being supported at its ends by standards 62 secured to the table 15. Hand screws 63 pass through the top of the standard 62 and serve to raise and lower the bar 61 when turned for the purpose of adjusting the fingers 59 and 60 to box covers of different heights.
Projecting over the longer finger 59 is a tongue 6 1 through which passes a screw 65 bearing on said finger for the purpose of varying the tension of said finger and its pressure upon the box cover. The shorter resilient finger 60 is pivotally mounted on a lever 66 carried by a bracket 67 depending from the underside of the cross-bar 61.
Projecting rearwardly from the legs 16 is a bearing 68 in the outer end of which is fulcrumed a lever 69 extending upwardly to the frame 3-1- and connected at its upper end by a link 70 to the stem 11 on the slide 40. The lever 69 ext-ends a short distance below said fulcrum 71 and is there provided with alslot 72for a pin 73 on a'bar 74 which extends in a forward direction and has a horizontal'slot' 7 forme'dtherem through which the shaft 25 passes. The forward exroller 76 that bears against the cam 32, said roller being held against the cam at all times tremity of the bar 74 has pivoted thereon a by acoil spring 77 connected to the lever 69 above said fulcrum, and to the frame of the machine 01' to an arm 78 bolted to said I frame. Rotation of the cam causes the bar 74 to move in a horizontal direction and rock the lever 69 thereby moving-the slide and the pusher head 47 to and from the punching mechanism, automatically feeding the box covers to said punching mechanism.
Pivotally mounted on a bar 79 extending across the machine between the legs 16 of the two sides is one end of a vertically swinging lever 80, the outer end of which is pivotally connected to an upright rod 81 slidable at its upper end through a'guide, in thepresent instance the guide is formedby the arm 78 to which one end-of the spring 77 is connected. Uponthe rod 31 is fixed a collar 82 that strikes the arm'78 and limits the upward movement of the rod 81. Pivoted to the lever 80 back of the rod '81 is a yoke plate-S3 in the upper forked end of which is mounted a transverse bar 84, the yoke vplate and bar being "connected by a pivot pin 85 fastened through the center of said bar. From theend of the bar '84 rods 86 extend upwardly to elbow levers 87 each lever being pivoted to a bracket 88 depending from one of the punch carriers. Each elbowlever'has an arm 89 that projects upwardly through a slot in a plate 52 and through an opening in one'of the punches 50. Surrounding each punch is a coil spring 1 90 one end of which bears against the inner bearing 51 and the other end against the arm 89-vof the elbow lever. By means of these springs the punches 50 are held in retracted position as shown in Fig. 8 and the lever 80 and arm 81 raised with the collar 82 against the arm 78 so as to bring a lug 91 on lever8O into position to be acted upon by the cam 33, said cam depressing the lever and advancing the punches tocut the thumb notches from the box covers.
In the operation of the machine, box covers are placed by hand in the runway 36 with one side, against the pusher head 47. The motor having been started the driving mechanism runs continuously and atone point ineach revolution of the cam 32 the roller 76 and bar 74 are permitted to move rearwardly under the tension of the spring 77 which swings the lever 69 forwardly and through its'connectionto the slide 40 the pusher head 47 is advanced to the punching mechanism carrying the box-cover between the punches-50'thereon. As the boxcover nears thepunches it's-forwardend rides over the upwardly inclined portions 58 of the channel bars to carry said front over the punch bearings 51 so that the sidesof the cover. to be punched may fall into the notches 56 in' said bearings. After the pusher head" has reached the limit of its stroke it immediately returns to receive another cover leaving the former cover properly positioned in the punching mechanism for the punches to act thereon for the purpose of cutting the thumb holes or finger notches thereinysaid box cover being held against the table by the pressure of thesprings 59 and 60. .The proper position for the thumb holes or finger notchesin the cover is deteri'nin'ed by turning thenut 46 to loosen the bolt 45 and adjusting the pusher 47 upon the slide 40. Shortly after the .box cover enters the'punching mechanism the'second cam 33 onthe shaft 25 engages the lug 91 on the swinging lever 80 depressing; the
same and drawing down the rods 86. "These rods rock the elbow levers 87 which through their upwardly projecting fingers 89 in engagement with the punches oO move said punches and out semi circular or other shaped notches from opposite sides of the box coverto form the thumb holes. -As
soon as the cam 33 disengages the lug 91 the springs surrounding the punches return the latter, the swinging lever 80 and the connections between them to normal position.
It is sometimes desirable to form a thumb by screws'or bolts 95 at one side of the frame 34 so as to move laterally with the angle bar 37' when adjusted to suit box covers of different sizes. The angle bar37 is elevated some distance above the angle bar 37 and serves as'a support for one side of the boX cover when fed to the punching mechanism. As" thus arranged box covers are placed upon the angle barf37 and i the angle bar 37 at'the opposite side of the center line of the machine and advanced tov the punching mechanism by the pusher head 47. The side of the box cover resting upon the angle bar 37 will enter the notch; 56 in the punch head 51 and have a thumb hole out therein, while the". side of the cover.

order to get a wider contact with the cover a finger 93 projecting toward the angle bar 37 and having a socket 94 is slipped over the pusher head 47, thus providing a broad bearing to contact with the rear side of the box cover while being fed to the punching mechanism. The n'ioveinent of the arm 69 to feed blanks to the punches is limited by an adjustable stop bar 102 adjustable in the frame of the machine below the table 15 and clamped in position by a set screw 100 threaded in a projection 101 on the frame. A cap 103 which is preferably made of rubher is fitted on the end of rod 102 against which the arm 09 abuts.
Vhat I claim is,
1. In a machine of the kind described, a pair of punches in axial line and adapted to be adjusted to and from each other, a runway for guiding articles to said punches, means for aiiiton'iatically feeding articles to be punched along said runway and between said punches, means for simultaneously ac tuating said punches, dies supporting the article being punched against the thrust of said punches, and guiding means for each punch adjustable toward and from each other with said punches.
2. In a machine of the kind described, a pair of punches arranged opposite to each other, a carrier for each punch adapted to be adjusted with the punches to and from each other, a runway for guiding articles to said punches formed of two parallel bars adjustable coincidentally with the punch carriers to vary the width of the runway, means for automatically feeding articles to be punched along said runway and between the punches, and means for simultaneously actuating said punches.
3. In a machine of the kind described, a pair of punches arranged opposite to each other, c: rriers for said punches adapted to be adjusted with the punches to and from each other, a runway for guiding articles to said punches formed of parallel bars adjustable in width coincidentally with the punch carriers, the forward ends of each of said bars being inclined upwardly and connected to a punch carrier to guide articles fed to the punches over said carrier, means for automatically feeding articles to be punched along said runway and between said punches, and means for simultaneously actuating the punches.
4. In a machine of the kind described, a. pair of punches arranged opposite to each other and adapted to be adjusted to and from each other, means for simultaneously actuating said punches, means for automatically feeding articles to be punched between said punches, and yielding pressure means for holding the article while being punched.
5. In a machine of the kind described, a pair of punches arranged opposite to each other and adapted to be adjusted to and Lift/321i from each other, a runway leading to said punches upon which travel articles to be punched, said runway being adjustable in width, automatic feeding means for the article to be punched movable longitudinally of the runway, and successively operating means for actuating the article feeding means and the punches.
6. In a machine of the kind described, a pair of punches arranged opposite to each other and adapted to be adjusted to and from each other, a runway for supporting the article to be punched comprising two parallel bars adjustable to and from each other, a guide intermediate the bars ofthe runway and parallel. therewith, a slide movable in said guide to and from the punches for automatically feeding-articles thereto, continuously running driving mechanism, and means successively operated by said driving mechanism for actuating the auto- 'natic feed and the punches.
7. In a machine of the kind described, a pair of punches arranged opposite to each other, punch carriers adjustable with the punches to and from each other, a runway comprising a. pair of parallel bars forming supports for articles to be fed to the punches, each of said bars being connected to a punch carrier and adjustable therewith, automatic article feeding means between the bars of said runway and movable to and from said punches, driving mechanism including two cams, connections between one of said cams and the automatic feeding means, and other connections from the other cam for simultaneously actuating the punches.
8. In a machine of the kind described, a pair of punches arranged opposite to each other, punch carriers adjustable with the punches to and from each other, a runway for articles to be punched expansible and contractible coincidentally with the adjustment of the punch carriers, means for automatically feeding articles along said runway to said punches, a revoluble shaft, means controlled by the revolution of said shaft for operating said feeding means, and other means also controlled by the revolution of the shaft for operating the punches in unison.
9. In a machine of the kind described, a pair of punches arranged opposite to each other, punch carriers adjustable with the punches to and from each other, a runway for articles to be punched expansible and contractible coincidentally with the adjustment of the punch carriers, means for automatically feeding articles along said runway to said punches, yielding means for holding said articles in position while being punched, a revoluble shaft, means controlled by the revolution of said shaft for operating said feeding means, and other means also controlled by the revolutionof the shaft feed actuator for limiting the movement of the article feeding means to vary the position of the article with relation to said punches, and means for operating the punches in unison,
11. In a machine of the kind described, a pair of punches arranged opposite to each other, punch carriers adjustable with the punches to and from each other, a runway for articles to be punched expansible and contractible in width coincidentally with the adjustment of the punch carriers, means reciprocable along said runway for feeding.

12. In a machine of the kind described, a pair of punches arranged opposite to each other, a carrier for each punch adapted to move with it's punch to and from each other,
a runway forming a support for articles to be fed to the punches, a guide below the median line of the runway and parallel thereto, a slide movable longitudinally in said guide, a pusher head adjustable on said slide for engaging articles and automatically feeding them along the runway to the punches, means for adjusting said pusher head upon the slide, and means for operating said slide.
13. In a machine of the kind described, a table having" a transverse groove therein, a pair'of punches arranged opposite to'each other, a carrier for each punch adjustable to and from each other in said groove, a runway for supporting articles to be punched comprising two parallel angle bars extending rearwardly from said table and connected at their forward ends to the punch carriers and adjustable laterally therewith, inclines at the forward ends of said bars for elevating the front end of articles fed to the punches over the punch supports, a guide in the median line of said runway and below the same, a slide longitudinally movable in said slide.
14. In a machine of the pind described, a
table, a pair of punches arranged opposite to each other, carriers for said punches mounted on said table and adjustable to and from each other, arunway for supporting articles to be fed to said punches, said runway comprising a pair of parallel bars, each bar fixed to one of said punch carriers and adjustable with it, a supplemental bar adapted to be attached to one of said runway bars and on a higher plane to support one side of an article to be punched above the plane of the punch of that side, and means for automatically feeding said article to the punches. In a machine'of the kind described, a pair of punches arranged oppositeto each other, a runway comprising a pair of parallel bars adjustable simultaneously with the punches to and from each other, a removable bar at one side of said runway and parallel therewith,,brackets fixed to said bar and adapted to be removably connected with the adjacent side of the runway, said removable bar being arranged in a higher plane than the other barsand serving to hold one side of the article to be punched above. the punch of that side, and automatic means forfeeding articles to the other punch.
16. In a machine of the kind described, a pair of punches arranged opposite to each other adapted to be adjusted to and from each other, a runway for guiding articles to said punches, a support extending longitudinally of said runway andibeyond the axial line of the punches adapted to be removably attached on one side of said runway and project above the same to hold the corresponding side of an article to be punched above one of said'punches, means for automatically feeding articles to be punched along said runway to one of said punches, and means'for simultaneously actuating the punches. 1

A machine for punching finger holes in box cover edges, comprising in combination, a pair of punches arranged opposite to each other, a die near each punch, means for feeding the box covers toward and past the punches, and means for guiding the edge of the box cover over the said dies to bring the opposite edges of the box cover wall into the spaces between each punch and its corresponding die, and means for. actuiiting said punches 18.
