T all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, WILLIAM E. Monnv, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car-Door- Operating Mechanism, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in car door operating mechanisms, and has for its object to provide a new and improved form of mechanism in combination with a car having dump doors.
An object of my invention is to provide a rotatable operating shaft having flexible connections with the dump doors of a car, said shaft being arranged so that rotation thereof ill operate to close the doors. I further arrange this shaft so that it may be moved longitudinally of its axis at the conclusion of the closing movement, this longitudinal movement being effective to lock the doors in closed position. I further provide means operable upon such longitudinal movement of the shaft to accomplish this locking.
I further provide in addition to the above described mechanism, means to support or assist in supporting the doors in closed position.
These and other objects I attain by the construction set forth and described in the following specification and shown in the ac companying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a. plan view of a portion of a car showing a portion of the shaft and a dump door in closed position; Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the structure shown in Fig. 1, taken along the line 2 2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section along the line 3*3 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a detail vertical transverse section similar to Fig. 3 showing the door in closed position; Fig. 5 is a detail end elevation of the shaft looking means; Fig. 6 is a perspective of the block carried by the door; and Fig. 7 is a perspective of the supporting member or block carried by the shaft.
Like numerals refer to like elements throughout the drawings, in which 10 indicates generally a car having side walls 11 secured to the upright stakes 12. Extending upwardly from the walls 11 to the floor of the car are the inclined walls 11*, see Fig. 3, for example. The floor of the car 10 isv provided with the openings 10 therein and doors 13. of well known construction are provided to open and close these openings 10 The doors 13 are hinged along one edge, as indicated by numeral 13 being provided with flanges 13 extending under a face of the angles 11 to provide a close fitting joint. Extending toward the adjacent side of the car from the inclined walls 11 are the base flanges 11 provided with the downwardly extending portions 11 fitting against and secured to the stakes 12, see Fig. 3 for example. [dupporting brackets 15 are provided depending from the base flanges 11 and in these brackets is journaled the operating shaft 16, the same also being *journaled adjacent its ends in the plates 17, 2, which are carried by the car. This shaft is operatively connected to the doors 13 by chains or other flexible elements 18, in such wise that rotation of the shaft in the proper direction will move said doors to closed position. The end of the shaft is squared at 16 for engagement with the crank, handle or the like to effect such Winding or unwinding of the shaft. A star or ratchet wheel 19 is secured to the shaft 16 out "ardly of the plate 17, this star wheel being provided with the hub portion 19 for a purpose to be hereinafter described. A pawl or dog 20 is pivotally attached at one extremity between the parallel plates 21 by a pin 22 or the like. This pawl or dog 20 may be thrown into or out of engagement with the star wheel 19 and it is so arranged that it will prevent unwinding of said shaft when the same is being operated to return the doors to closed position, as will be apparent. Coacting with this pawl or dog 20 is a. locking cam 23 provided with the cam shoulder 23 and outwardly extending arm 23*. lVhen the shaft has been wound to closing position or position closing the door, as will be described later, the cam 23 which is pivoted at 9.. between the plates 21, may be swung to position shown in Fig. 5 wherein the cam shoulder 23 will bear on pawl 20 to lock the same in engaging position, the under-surface of the arm 23* resting on the hub 19* of the star wheel 19.
On the shaft 16 is secured the collar 26 having the circular shoulders 26, constituting in effect, circular teeth. A gear 27 is provided and is mounted on the shaft 28 which is journaled in the straps 29 secured to the base portions 11". This shaft 28 is provided with the non-circular end 28 for engagement by a suitable lever or operating handle. It will be apparent that while the gear is constantly in mesh with the circular teeth 26 it will not be affected by the rotation of the shaft in winding or releasing the doors. When the doors have been brought to closed position, however, the mounting of the shaft 16 is such that rotation of gear 27 in the direction of the arrow, Fig. 2, will slide said shaft 16 longitudinally of its axis to the position shown in Fig. 2, in which position the cam 93 may be swung over to the position shown in Fig. 5 locking the pawl 20 in its engagement with star wheel 19, the arm 23 serving not only to maintain such locking position, but preventing reverse longitiulinal movement of the shaft 16 by means of its position adjacent the star wheel 19, see F ig. 5. To permit this longitudinal movement of the shaft to or from locking position as I term it, I attach one end link of each of the chains 18 to the staples 29 and by means of this connection and the slip of the chain ensuing upon such longitudinal movement, this movement is not interfered with.
To assist in the supporting of the doors, I provide the following means :Supporting members or blocks 30, see Fig. 7, are rotatably mounted at suitable intervals on the shaft 16 between fixed collars 31 carried by said shaft. These blocks are formed with the rear and top faces 30, 30, respectively, an inclined face or surface 30 extending from face 30 These blocks are located with the rear face 3O adjacent the depending flange 11 of base portions 11, the top face 30 of said blocks being adjacent the under-surface of such base portions 11 Forwardly of the inclined surface 30 of blocks 30 is provided the inclined sur face 30 Blocks 32 are attached to the doors 13 at points corresponding with the location of blocks 30. Each of these blocks 32 is provided with depending flanges 32 apertured as indicated at 32, for insertion of bolts, rivets or the like to attach them to the front face of angles 13 carried by the doors 13. These blocks 32 are each provided with an upper plane surface 32 which may abut against the under surface of base portions 11 of the inclined walls 11 as shown in Fig. 4 for example. Each of the blocks 32 is further provided with an inclined under surface 32 inclined similarly to the inclined surface 30 of blocks 30, these inclined under surfaces 32 terminating in the depending flanges 32 When the shaft 16 is moved to the position shown in Fig. 2, which I term locking position, inclined surfaces 30 of blocks 30 will contact with inclined surfaces 32 of blocks 32 and a wedging action will take place whereby the doors 13 will be securely held in closed position. The depending flange 32 will serve as an additional step to limit the longitudinal movement of the shaft.
It will be apparent from the above description and the showing in the drawings,
that the location of the blocks 30 is such that downward strain transmitted thereto from blocks 32 will be in part transmitted to and received by the flanges 11 and base portion 11 of inclined walls 11 In brief, the operation of my device is as follows :llhen the doors 13 are in the position shown in Fig. 3, the shaft 16 is retated to wind up the chains 18 and thereby close the doors 13, the pawls 2O permitting such rotation but preventing unwinding during the same. lVhen the doors have been brought to closed position, and shaft 28 is rotated in the direction of the arrow in Fig. 2 through the medium of gear 27 and teeth 26, the shaft 16 will be moved longitudinally and to the left to the position shown in Fig. 2. This longitudinal movement will result in the engagement of blocks 30 with blocks 32 thereby supporting the doors in their closed position and at the conclusion of this longitudinal movement of the shaft, the cam 23 may be swung over to position shown in Fig. 5. thereby locking the pawl 20 and as explained above, preventing reverse longitudinal movement of the shaft, serving to lock the same in closed position. When it is desired to release the doors for dumping or the like, the locking member 23 is swung out of engagement with the pawl 20 and the latter may be thrown out of engagement with the wheel 19. The shaft 98 is next operated in a direction opposite to that indicated by the arrow in Fig. 2 to move the shaft longitudinally out of sup porting and locking position and when the blocks 30 and 32 are out of engagement the doors will be allowed to fall or drop to open position, the unwinding of the shaft not affecting the position or operation of gear 27, since the teeth 26* are concentric with the shaft 16 and are parallel. Previous to closing the doors pawl 20 may be thrown into engagement with the wheel 19, and in this connection it is to be noted that I preferably make this pawl 20 of sufficient width to engage wheel 19 and shaft 16 in either locking or non-supporting position, as is clearly shown in Fig. 1.
While I have described and shown my device with more or less particularity, I do not wish to be restricted to the form shown or described beyond the scope of the appended claims.
I claim 1. In combination with a car having a hinged door, a shaft operatively connected to said door and rotatable to close the same, said shaft being movable longitudinally to lock said door in closed position.
In combination with a car having a hinged door, a shaft operatively connected to said door and rotatable to close the same, and means to move said shaft longitudinally to lock said door.
3. In combination with a car having a hinged door, a shaft operatively connected to said door and rotatable to close the same, means to move said shaft longitudinally to lock said door, said means comprising a gear, and means carried by said shaft en gageable by said gear.
4. In combination with a car having a hinged door, a shaft journaled in said car, a. flexible member operatively connecting said shaft with said door whereby rotation of the former will close the latter, said shaft being mounted to move longitudinally, and means coacting with said shaft and door to lock the latter in closed position upon longitudinal movement of the former.
5. In combination with a car having a hinged door, a shaft journaled in said. car, a flexible member operatively connecting said shaft with said door whereby rotation of the former will close the latter, said shaft being mounted to move longitudinally, means coacting with said shaft and door to lock the latter in closed position upon longitudinal movement of the former, and means to support said door in closed position. said means being operable upon longitudinal movement of said shaft to locking position.
6. In combination with a car having a hinged door, a shaft operatively connected to said door and rotatable to close the same, said shaft being movable longitudinally to lock said door in closed position, an engage able wheel carried by said shaft, and a pawl member mounted to engage said wheel to prevent unwinding of said shaft.
7. In combination with a car having a hinged door, a shaft operativcly connected to said door and rotatable to close the same, said shaft being movable longitudinally to lock said door in closed position, an engageable wheel carried by said shaft, a pawl member mounted to engage said wheel to prevent unwinding of said shaft, and means to lock said pawl in engaging position.
8. In combination with a car having a hinged door, a shaft operatively connected to said door and rotatable to close the same. said shaft being movable longitudinally to lock said door in closed position, an engageable wheel carried by said shaft, a pawl member mounted to engage said wheel to prevent unwinding of said shaft, and means to lock said pawl in engaging position, said means being arranged to normally prevent movement of said shaft from looking position.
9. In combination with a car having a hinged door, a shaft operatively connected to said door and rotatable to close the same, said shaft being movable longitudinally to lock said door in closed position, an engageable wheel carried by said shaft, a pawl member mounted to engage said wheel to prevent unwinding of said shaft, and a locking member pivotally mounted and arranged to permit movement thereof to position locking said pawl in engagement with said wheel.
10. In combination with a car having a hinged door, a shaft operatively connected to said door and rotatable to close the same, said shaft being movable longitudinally to lock said door in closed position, an engage able wheel carried by said shaft, a pawl member mounted to engage said wheel to prevent unwinding of said shaft. and a locking member pivotally mounted and arranged to permit movement thereof to posi tion locking said pawl in engagement with said wheel. said member being provided with a cam shoulder adapted to contact with said pawl to hold the same in position.
11. In combination with a car having a hinged door. a shaft operatively connected to said door and rotatable to close the same, said shaft being movable longitudinally to lock said door in closed position. an engageable wheel carried by said, shaft, a pawl member mounted to engage said wheel to prevent unwinding of said shaft, said wheel being provided with a hub portion, and a locking member mounted to permit engagement thereof with said pawl to lock the same in engagement with said wheel, said locking member being provided with a portion thereof adapted to rest on said hub portion.
12. In combination with a car having a hinged door. a shaft operatively connected to said door and rotatable to close the same, said shaft being movable longitudinally to locl; said door in closed position. an engageable wheel :arried by said shaft. a pawl member mounted to engage said wheel. to prevent unwinding of said shaft. said wheel being provided with a hub portion, and a locking member mounted to permit engagement thereof with said pawl to lock the same in engagement with said wheel, said locking member being provided with a portion thereof adapted to rest on said hub portion, said portion being arranged to normally prevent movement of said shaft from looking position.
13. In combination with a car having a hinged door. a rotatable shaft operatively connected to said door to close the same, means to move said shaft longitudinally to lock said door in closed position, and means to support said door in said closed position, said means comprising members carried by said door and shaft respectively, said members being provided with coacting inclined surfaces.
14. In combination with a car having a hinged door, a shaft operatively connected to said door and rotatable to close the same, said shaft being movable longitudinally to lock paid door in closed position, means to support said door when in closed position, said means being operable upon such longitudinal movement of said shaft and comprising a block secured to said door, and a coacting block carried by said shaft.
15. In combination with a car having a hinged door, a shaft operatively connected to said door and rotatable to close the same, aid shaft being movable longitudinally to lock. said door in closed position, means to support said door when in closed position, said means being operable upon such longitudinal movement of said shaft and comprising a block secured to said door, and a roact'ing bloch carried by said shaft, said blocks ha. ing coacting inclined surfaces.
16. In combination with a car having a hinged door and an angle adjacent said door, a shaft rotatably journaled in said ca.- adjacent said angle, said shaft being operatively connected to said door to close the same when rotated, mains to support said door in locked position, said shaft being movable longitudinally to operate such sup porting means, said means comprising a block carried by said shaft, said block being provided with sides located adjacent the sides of said angle.
17. In combination with a car having a hinged door and an angle adjacent said door, a shaft rotatably journaled in said car adjacent said angle, said shaft being operatii 'ely connected to said door to close the same when rotated, means to support said door in locked position, said shaft being movable longitudinally to operate such supporting means, said means comprising a block carried by said shaft, said block being provided with sides located adjacent the sides of said angle, and a second block carried by said door and arranged to coact with said first named block.

In combination with a car having a hinged door and an angle adjacent said door, a shaft rotatably journaled in Said car adjacent said angle, said shaft being operatixely connected to said door to close the same when rotated, means to support said door in locked position, said shaft being movable longitudimilly to operate such supporting means, said means comprising a block carried by said shaft, said block being provided with sides located adjacent the sides of so id angle, and a second block carried by said door and arranged to coact with said first named block, said blocks having coacting inclined surfaces.
