RALPH M. MYERS. OF MUIR. MICHIGAN.
MEDICINE-DROPPIER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RALPH M. MYERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Muir, in the county of Ionia and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful In'iprovements in Medicine -'Droppers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in medicine droppers or dispensers and more particularly to a medicine dropper which is adapted'to beused in connection with the dispensing of liquids such as chloroform, ether, etc., which evaporate quickly when exposed to the atmosphere from bottles or like containers.
An object of this invention is the provision of a stopper for containers of this nature with which the amount of liquid dispensed from the container can be regulated as well as the flow of the liquid, the latter being regulatable from drops to a steady stream as necessary or desired.
Another object of this invention is the provision of a device of this nature so constructed that when the liquid notbeing dispensed from the container the accidental admission of air thereinto is practically impossible.
A still further object of this invention is the provision of adevice of this nature which is as simple in construction as is consistent with its functionary operation and in the construction; of which is embodied durability, efiiciency of operation and sim-- plicity of operation. I
WVith the foregoing and other objects in view, this invention consists in such details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanymg drawings and claimed.
In describing the invention in detail, ref
erence will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters of reference designate like or corresponding parts ,throughout the several views, and in Specification of Letters Patent.

having a neck 2. It to be understood that in practical use any type of container that will fulfil the necessary requisites may be used. Inserted into the opening of the neck erably made of glass or transparent material.
but it is to be understood that any suitable material may be employed in their construction. The tube 5which will be hereinafter N referred to as the dispensing tube" is of the same diameter its entire length and termi-.
nates at the bottom of the stopper 3 as. is shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. The tube 6 which we will call the air tubev or vent is much longer than the tube 5 and extends downwardly into the bottom of the main; body portion of the container l andltapers slightly toward its lower end. Mounted in fluid tight engagement in the upper ends of the tubes 5 and 6 are two stoppers 7 and 8, respectively. The upper ends of these.
stoppers 7 and 8 are provided with caps 9 and 10 which have the projections 11 and 12 extending upwardly therefrom. These- projections 11 and 12 are each provided with an opening therethrough. Mounted in the stopper 3 is a member 14: which forms a pivoting point for the lever 15. The lever 15 has a handle portion 16 bent substantially at right angles to the body or leverage portion 17 and extending preferably parallel with the vertical lines of the container. The lever 15 is pivotally mounted upon the member 14 at 18 and has a rod 19 extending transversely through its end 20. This rod 19 extends through and is rigidly mounted in the openings in the projections 11 and. 12 of the caps 9 and 10 and forms a means whereby when the handle 16 of the lever 15 is operated the stoppers. 7 and 8 will be raised or lowered, according to the action of the lever 15, in or out of the tubes 5 and 6.
A coil spring 21 is connected to the leverage end 17 of the lever 15 at 22 and to the. stopper 3 at 23. This coil spring keeps the leverage portion 17 of the lever 15 normally in a downward position thus firmly'holding the stoppers 7 and 8 in the ends of the tubes 5 and 6 whereby the device is normally closed and the admission of air into the container and the contents thereof is prevented. By connecting the spring 22 to the lever 15, intermediate the pivotal point 18 and the stoppers 10 and 11, the stoppers will be more efliciently retained in the tubes 5 and 6 because the retaining force of the spring will be administered to the stoppers so as to eliminate the retarding action of the pivotal point which would be occasioned if the spring were connected, to the lever at a greater distance from the supports than the pivotal point of the lever.
When it is desired to dispense the liquid contained in the container 1 therefrom the handle 16 of the lever 15 is pressed inwardly or in the direction of the arrow 25 shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, thus the stoppers 7 and 8 are forced upwardly and out of the ends of the tubes 5and 6 and when the container is tipped the liquid contained therein will freely flow out of the tube 5. I The necessary air, is-admitted'into the bottle through the tube 6. The amount of liquid and the flow thereof from the con-. tainer can be easily regulated by the pressing inward of the handle 16, for it will be seen from the foregoing description and the drawings that the more pressure exerted upon the handle 16 and the farther inward:
it is bent the farther the stoppers 7 and 8 willbe drawn out of the tubes 5 and 6.
In practical fields, certain minor features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts may necessitate alterations to which the patentee is entitled, provided such alterations are comprehended within thescope of what is claimed.
. What is claimed is:
1. A dropping attachment for liquid containers consisting of two tubular members mounted in a stopper for the mouth of said container, one of said tubular members terminating at the inner end of said stopper, the other of said tubular members extending downwardly into the main body portion of the container said tubular members forming means for the dispensing of the liquid contained in the container stoppers mounted in the outer ends of said tubular members, a member mounted in said stopper a lever pivotally mounted upon said last named member and connected to said stoppers, said pivoted lever forming means for automatically operating said stoppers a handle upon said lever for facilitating the actuation ofthe same, a coil spring interposed between the leverage end of said lever and. said stoppers and connected to each of them, said coil spring forming a means for normally holding the said stoppers in the mouth .of said tubular members.
2. A dropping attachment for liquid containers consisting of two tubular members mounted in a closure for the mouth of said container, said tubular members forming means for thedispensing of the liquid in the container, closures forthe outer ends of said: tubular, members, a lever pivotally mounted upon 'said container closure and connected with said tube closures and means connected with said lever to hold this lever normally in a relation that the tube closures are in their operative position.
