To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JnLIUs S. SOUTHARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sea Cliff, Long Island, in the county of Nassau and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Door-Hinges, of which the following is a specification.

The general object of the invention is to admit of adjusting so as to close freely, a sagged, swollen or warped door, without detaching the said door from its hinges or in any way changing the original relative positions of the leaves of the hinges and the parts of the door or door frame to which the said leaves are secured. And to this end the invention consists in a means for connecting the leaves of the hinges and said means being so designed as to admit of varying the distance between the leaves of each hinge whenever desired.

Other objects will appear and be better understood from that embodiment of my invention of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part hereof in which Figure l is a front elevation of the device in use. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail front elevation. Fig. 3 is a Vertical longitudinal section of the device showing the sameapplied to a door.

The variousparts about to he described of the hinge forming the subject matter of the present invention, are preferably of metal, and this, of course, will vary in size and the exposed parts will likewise vary in design as the weight and characterof the door with which they are employed, demands.

The leaf to be secured to the door 5, consists of an elongated body 6 withscrew holes 7-7 which receive the screws 8-8 or other suitable fastening means for connecting the said leaf to a face of the door. Transverse dovetail slots in the leaf 6 are designed to receive the slide bars 9-9 which are shaped to correspond to the grooves and which are adjustably secured therein by suitable fastening devices, such as set screws 10-10.

The knuckles 11-11 at one end of the slide bars 9-9, fit between the knuckles 12-12 of a leaf 13 of ordinary construction, which is to be secured to the door frame 14:, and are connected to the knuckles 11 by the pintle 15 of ordinary construction.

In using the device for connecting a door 5 such as shown in Fig. 1, to a door frame .1 1, the leaf 13 is secured as usual to the inner face of the door frame 14. Instead, however, of connecting the opposite leaf to the adjacent edge of the door as is usual when employing the ordinary form of hinge, the leaf 6 is arranged over the face of the door and the portion 6 secured at a distance from the edge of the door suflicient to admit of the slide bars 9-9 being moved in either direction through the grooves after the door is first set up and properly adjusted.

A cap or covering 16 is designed to house practically all of. the leaf secured to the door, but has notches or slots 17 in its inner side to receive portions of the knuckles 11. A portion of the outer surfaces of the knuckles abut against the adjacent outer walls of the slots permitting a portion of the strain which is delivered to the arms by the closing of the door to be taken up by the casing, in this way relieving the leaf (S of having to bear all the strain which would result, in time, in the withdrawal of the fastening screws 8. The provision of the cap or covering which is by preference faced with a suitable design, lends to the attractiveness or appearance of the hinge when in use as shown in the drawings. When it becomes necessary to adjust the door to compensate for distortion thereof, the screws 18-18 which fasten the cap or covering to the door, are removed to liberate the said cap after which the set screws 10 are unscrewed so as to admit of the sliding of the slide bars 9 in such direction as will admit of the door closing freely and properly abutting the striking plate.

What is claimed as new is:-

Ina door hinge, the combination with a leaf member adapted for attachment to a door frame and provided with knuckles, of a second leaf member adapted for attachment to the door and provided with channels, means for securing the leaves in position, a casing inclosing the second mentioned leaf and havingone of its sides provided with spaced slots, arms adjustably mounted in the channels of the second mentioned leaf and extending through the slots in the casing and provided with knuckles delivered to the arms to be taken up by the casing upon the closing of the door.
