To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ANTON NELSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sauk Center, in the county of Stearns and State of Minnesota, have invented new and useful mprovements in Wire-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to wire fasteners for fence posts, and particularly to a fastener designed for use in connection with concrete or plastic posts; and it has for its primary object the provision of a fastener of this character which will be substantially in the form of a staple having a socket portion embedded partly in the post and opening at one of its ends directly onto one of the surfaces of the post and adapted to receive the opposite terminal of the fastener and to hold the same operatively conned around the wire.
It is also an object of the invention to pro- Videsuch form of fastening which may be readily adjusted to a released position, by means of a suitable tool when it is desired to separate the line wire therefrom.y
Another object of the invention is the provision of a wire fastener which may be constructed from a single piece of metal and provided with mating locking terminals that are adapted when adjusted to their applied positions relatively to be positlvely held against accidental separation.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings :-Figure 1 is a vertical section through a portion of a fence post, showing the application of the fastener thereto, the free ends of the fastener being shown in an open position; Fig. 2 is a similar view, showing the free end of the fastener in a secured position; and Fig. 3 is a perspective View of the fastener removed from the post.
The fastener l herein illustrated is constructed preferably of metal bent substantially in oval form and provided with mating locking ends 2 and 3, a side branch 4 and connecting bight portions 5 and 6 between the branch 4 and the ends 2 and 3, as illustrated. The end 2 is normally spaced from the outer extremity of the end 3, and as illustrated the latter is provided with a socket 7 which is gradually curved at its inner closed end into the adjacent bight 6 of the fastener, as at 8.
As specified the fastener is particularly intended for use in connection with a composition or plastic post, such as the one shown at 8 in the drawings. The socket portion 7 of the bight 6 and approximately one-half of the branch 4 are embedded in the post and the fastener thus securely held in place therein. The outer open end of the socket 7 opens directly onto the surface B of the post and is preferably flush therewith, while the terminal 2 of the fastener is slightly spaced from said surface B and disposed in longitudinal alinement with the socket. In using the fastener, the line wire C is inserted in the loop 9 defined by the terminal 2, the bight 5 and an adjacent portion of the branch 4. The terminal 2 is then driven into the socket 7 and deflected at its tip end into the curved branch 8. In this manner the terminal 2 becomes distorted to such a degree as will positively prevent both terminals from becoming accidentally separated under the action of force applied to the line wire.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention as claimed.
