Description

A. WNSHR TRUNK. AFPLIGATION FILED 00T. 26, 1911. l o l l 593629 Patented 0st. 2?, 19M,
w .1. f QE Go oww@ ATTORNEYS that the bottom of the closure with its downwardly extending valance strip will swing clear of thev floor as it is opened.
To close the top opening of the wardrobe section, there is provideda closure 29 horizontally hinged to the halftop 16 along the line of its contact with the upper edge of the partition 12. From the free edges of this closure there project at right angles thereto valance strips 30, 31, and 32 to overlap the upper edges respectively of the side 10, side 15 and side closure 24.
Spring catches 22 secure the'free side edge of the closure 24 to the'side 15 and the edge of the top closure to the overlapped top edge of the side closure 24. A. lock 33 having its two members upon the adjacent edges of the top closure 29 and side closure 24 provides means for locking the wardrobe section.
It will now be apparent that the entire trunk stands upon one solid bottom and that either or both compartments can be opened without.l having to move the trunk' or either compartment; also that the chiffonier compartment may be opened, left open, shut again or left entirely closed without regard to the condition of the wardrobe compartment; alsothat the wardrobe compartment can be opened, left open, shut again or left entirely closed without regard to the condition of the chiffonier compartment.
The chiffonier compartment may be provided with drawers o'r other containers 34 which may be readily withdrawn therefrom through the side opening therein. It will befurther noticed that though the trunk has a great area of openings, yet these openings and the xed trunk casing, the internal partition and the closures are all so arranged and constructed as to give great strength and rigidity to the lentire trunk; particularly that the single internal partitionis so arranged as to leave only one opening in the chiii'onier compartmentfand that on its narrow side, and forms a brace centrally located in the trunk to stiffen it and particularly to form a solid back tying together both sides and the bottom of the wardrobe compartment, and so bracing the sides and bottom from any spreading. This partition is secured at about the center of the bottom and the side 10, it thereby gives those parts the stiffness of the material therein instead A inv.
'tenal partition affords the strength of its' of simply the stiffness of the cornerfasten- It will be further noted that this inangular contact with the half-top 16 and the half-side 15 for the rigid and strong hinging of the closures 29 andl 17 respectively. This arrangement prevents any tendency of these closures to spring themselves or the part to which they are'P hinged, and adding strength to said closures and the whole trunk as the edges of these closures oppo- Vsite their hinged gedges form' external corner edges of the trunk whenl closed.
Around the inside of the wardrobe compartment extends a U-shaped metal strip 35 having its loop portion fastened to the parfront edges of the sides 10 and 15 and securely fastened thereto. This strip further stren thens the upper forward corners of the sldes 1'0 and 15 and its loop portion affords a secure anchora e for the bent in- .ner ends 36 of a pair o? slideways 37 horizo tallyarranged and spaced a vshort distaillce lfrom either side of the wardrobe comvpartment and extending tothe front or open side thereof. Just back from the outer end' of each of these slideways 37 there is rigidly fastened a brace 38 which extends downwardly and outwardly in a diagonal direction to the adjacent side of the compartrnent to which it is rigidly secured. To the free end of each of these slideways is perpendicularly hinged an extension slideway 39 by means of a deeply interlocking rulejoint formed from intermeshing projections formed integral. with the slideway 37 and the extension slideway 39, through which projections a joint pin 40 is inserted. The joint is adapted to stop the extension when ithas been swun straight out into line with the fixed .sli ewayV as' shown in Figs. 2 and 3 and to allow the extension to be swung around horizontally to a position entirely within the wardrobe compartment as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 3 and allow the side closure thereof to be closed. Over these slidewaysfit and slide notched cross-pieces 41 to which are secured clotheshangers 42 of any Vdesired form allowing the clothes to be drawn outfrom the wardrobe compartment and be suspended. upon the extension slideways without the wardrobe compartment and where they can be easily seen or removed. l
Upon the slideways is slidingly mounted a clothes retaining rack formed of uprights 43 and cross-pieces 44 and sliding clutches 45 adapted to allow the rack to be slid back and forth upon the slideways 37 and 39 and to hold the rack in any position on said -slideways without any further operation. Eachclutch 45 is of metal and has a strap right 43 of the rack and in its body portion h'as an opening of the shape and substantially the size ofthe slideways in cross-secstion and so that the clutch encircles the slideway on its upper and inner side ensideas plainly seen in Fig. `4. This arrangement prevents the rack from being removed from the slideways in any way except from the outer ends thereof. Theouter ends of the extension slideways are turned upwardly in the shape of hooks 48 which prevent the tition 12 and its ends extended nearly to the portion 46 for securingit rmly to the uptirely and partly on the outer and lower' cri ,hook 48.
ln operation the wardrobe closures 2A and 29 are opened, the extension slideways swung out into extended position and the clothes retaining rack moved out onto the extension slideways by first pressing inwardly upon the lower part of the rack. The rack may be then entirely removed from the slideways as heretofore described and the clothes hangers slid off of the ends of the extension or the rack may be left at the outer end of the extensions and the'u clothes hangers slid lifted up taking t-hei extensions.
