APPLICATION FILED 11111.31, 1914.

. Attorneys CHARLES H. TOPP, 0E HUNTINGTON, WEST VIRGINIA.
HYDROCARBON-BURNER.
To all whom it may concern 1 I Be it known that I, CHARLES H. Torr, a
citizen of the United States, residing at- Huntington, in the county of Cabell and State of West Virginia, have invented a new and useful Hydrocarbon-Burner, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention appertains to gas or hydrocarbon burners of the Bunsen type, and aims to provide a novel and improved multiple or gang burner for use in cooking and heating stoves, as well as for other kindred purposes. l
It is the object of the presentinvention to provide a multiple or gang burner comprising a unique assemblage of component parts, whereby the structure will be comparatively simple, substantial, compact and inexpensive, as well as being convenient, practical and efiicient in its use.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a series of burners, each burner embodying a tube having a peculiar form of bore therethrough whereby the gaseous fuel discharged into the mixing tubes, will be prevented from blowing the flames out,
should the gas be turned on full, and in order that when the gas is only partially turned on, the mixing tubes will properly catch'the jets of gas. -With the .foregoing general objects outlined, and with other objects in view, which will be apparent as the'nature of the inventlon is better understood, the present invention resides m the combmation and arrangement of parts and in the details of con,
struction herein after described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
T he invention has been illustrated in its preferred embodiment in the accompanying drawing, wherein 2- Figure l is a side elevation of the improved burner, portions being shown in section and portions being broken away. Fig. 2 is an end view of the device, a portion being broken away. Fig. 3 is a fragn'lental plan view illustrating a modified form of burner tubes.
In carrying out the present invention, there is provided a pair of end castings or carriers 1 and 2, having the inner bosses 3, which are tapped so as to threadedly receive Specification of Letters Patent.

the terminals or ends of. a gas pipe 4. The casting or carrier 1 is also tapped from the outside, concentrically of the boss 3, to re ceive one end of a nipple or coupling 5, for attaching'the gas supply pipe to the burner, the nipple 5 communicating with the gas pipe or chamber 4 for deliverin the gas thereinto. The present structure includes a third casting embodying an elongated base 6 having a series of upstanding or upright mixing tubes 7. The main or mixing tube casting forming the body of the burher structure, is provided at its ends with tongues 8, which are integral with the endmost mixing tubes 7 and end portions of the base 6. The'tongues 8 are adapted to be received by bifurcated openings or opensl'ots 9, formed in the upstanding extensions, or standards 10, forming a part of the resp'ec tive castings. 1 and 2. It is evident that after the castings or carriers 1 and 2 have been engaged to the ends of the gas pipe or chamber, the tongues 8 of the main or body casting may be slipped downwardly into the slits 9 to attach the main or body casting to the end castings or carriers 1 and 2. The standard s or extensions 10 carry set or thumb screws 11 arranged to jam or impinge against the tongues 8 for locking the main or body casting in place. The inner sides of the standards or extensions 10 are also formed with ledges or shoulders 12 upon which the ends or terminals of the base 6 are adapted to rest or seat when the body or main'casting is in place.
The several mixing tubes 7 of the main or body casting are rendered rigid, bymeans of the integral webs 13 connecting the adjoining or companion mixing tubes, and ex- The webs 14: also connect the outmost mixing tubes 7 and the tongues 8. Each of the mixing tubes 7 is provided with a longitudinal bore therethrough, the bore having a portion 15 of uniform diameter extending from the upper end oi. thetube 7 to a point short of the lower end; of the tube, or the base 6. The lower end portion of the bore is tapered upwardly; 'as at 16. to form a con tracted opening 17"at the lower end of the portion 15 which is of uniform diameter from the opening 17 to the upper end or mouth of the mixing tube. The lower end or mouth of the tapered portion 16 is relatively large, to receive the combustible gas from" 4:. It is evident that the gas pipe is provided with an outlet aperture 18 below each of the mixing tubes 7 and that the mixing tubes are spaced sufficiently above the gas pipe 4, to permit air to be drawn into the mixing tubes with the gas, whereby the gaseous mixture will burn with a blue or Bunsen flame, thereby producing a maximum heating effect with a minimum amount of fuel, and with a minimum amount of soot deposit.
In use, the burner may be readily set within the fire box of a cook stove, the castings or carriers 1 and 2 being readily placed upon the grate, or other support, although it is to be understood that the burner be employedi in various capacities, which need not be itemized. The gas supply pipe is connected to the nipple 5, and when the gas is admitted into the pipe or chamber 4, the gas will be discharged in jets or streams through the outlet orifices or apertures 18,
the jets of gas entering the tapered portions impetus of the gas would be prevented from blowing out or extinguishing the flames, as not infrequently results with the ordinary I Bunsen burner, it being observed that the tapered portions 16 of the mixing tube bores will serve to arrest the gas by causing streams of gas to converge toward and through the constricted openings 17. In thismanner, the force of vthe streams or jets of gas is reduced considerably, so as to eliminate the tendency of the flames to be blown out. The heatingv efi'ect of the burner will be of a high order, due to the provision of-the 7 gas chamber having its terminals threade upper ends of burner tubes 7 are flattened, to provide elongated outlets connected at their ends. The burner tubes 7 provide fan-shaped flames, which are desirable in certain cases.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. In a gas burner, a pair of carriers,
engaging the carriers, a body including a series of mixing tubes, the said chamber having outlet apertures coiiperating with the tubes, and means for detachably securing the terminal portions of the body and carriers together.
2. In a' gas burner, a pair of carriers, a
gas chamber having its terminals threadedly engaging the carriers, and a body including a series of mixing tubes 3 and terminal tongues, the said carrlers having slots receiving the said tongues, and the said chamher having outlet apertures coiiperating with the said tubes.
3. In a gas burner. a pair of carriers, havmg slotted extensions, a gas pipe having its terminals in threaded engagement with the carriers, and a body including a series of mixing tubes having its terminals engaging within the slots of the said extensions, the said pipe having outlet apertures coiiperating with the said tubes.-
4 In a gas burner, a pair of end castings having taps and standards provided with slots and ledges, a gas pipe having its terninals thr'eadedly received by the said taps,
and a body casting including an elongated base having upstanding mixing tubes, webs connecting, the companion tubes, and terminal tongues, the terminal tongues of the body casting engaging the slots of the said standards, and the terminals of the said base seating upon the said ledges.
5. In a gas burner, a pair of Carriers, having open slots, a gas chamber having its terminals in' threaded engagement with the carriers, a body having terminal portions fitting Within the said slots anddncluding a series of mixing tubes, the said chamber having outlet apertures coiiperating with the said tubes, and means'carried by the carriers for engaging the terminal port-ions 0f the body to retain the same in place.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as LB.- HAeAn, JoHiv F. GxnnisoNL -my mvn, I have hereto affixed my signature
