To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUSTUS FREEBORN BROWN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Havre de Grace, in the county of Harford and State of hilaryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metallic Railway-Ties and Fastenings, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a metallic railwaytie and rail fastening, and the invention consists, essentially, of.a railway-tie formed of a single piece of metal having on the upper surface near the end, suitable seats for the rails, said tie being, also, integrally formed below the sides of each rail seat, with a pair of vertically-disposed spaced boxes which are closed on all sides, except the top and bottom and having Opposite interior walls fashioned sinuous or with alternate projections and depressions whereby a ser-. pentine channel is formed for the reception of the spikes which secure the rails to the tie. v
My invention furthermore specifically con sists of a metal tie formed integral with a horizontal base flange and a flange arranged perpendicularly thereto and extending longitudinally along the central portion of the base flange, said perpendicular flange being widened on its upper surface near each end to form a seat for a railway rail, and said.

My invention also consists in making each.
spike receiving box of greater horizontal width than the diameter of the spike it isto admit, to enable said spike receiving box to receive a shim or like part, which may be normally substantially straight and which is introduced into the box against a sinuous wall thereof, whereby the shim is distorted and made to conform substantially to the wavy surface of the wall simultaneously with the driving of the spike and the distortion of the same.
My invention also consists of the parts and the constructions, arrangements and combinations of parts which I will hereinafter describe and claim.

For the sake of lightness and at the sametime to give added strength to the tie, the
vertical flange Z2 thereof may be formed with openings 0 at the ends and intermediateporh tions, as is Well knownin the art.

A leading feature of the present invention is in casting or otherwise integrally forming the tie with vertical boxes C, located at opposite sides of and vertically below each rail seat, said boxes being closed on all sides except the top and bottom, the vertical may tie, is also formed integrally with vertical I against which abutathe outer edges of the horizontal base, flanges'of rails 4 and by which lateral outward spreading of -dinary and substantially straight flange of the tie at this point beingslightly flared transversely toenable the boxes to be satisfactorily formed in the relatively thin edgewise standing flange b of the tie. The interior of each box G is cast with two oppo site walls 0, which are made sinuous or -with alternate curved projections and depressions. Each of the boxes forms a spike receiving recess of serpentine form, into which the orrailway spike is designed to be driven and to be distorted during the driving operation, where- 'by the spike vis made to substantially conform to the wavy outline of the walls of the box against which the spike is forced as it is driven into lace. The sinuous walls of the boxes, therefore, give a corresponding wavy form to the spike, which greatly adds to the security with which the spike is held. These walls also have the function of again straightening the spike when the same is withdrawn. I
When it is desired to adjust the rails inwardly to take up or compensate'for-wear of-the treads of the rails, I employ suitable metal shims D, which may be normally straight and which are placed in the boxes against one of the sinuous -walls thereof, whereby. upon driving the spike in place the shim is crowded against and into the curvatures of the wall and is thereby so distorted as to make it conform substantially to the wavy surface thereof; at the same time the spike, which isconflned between the shim and the opposite sinuous wall of'the box, is
