Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CARLEY GOULD I/VELD, a `citizen of the United States, residing at North Chatham, in the county of Barnstable and Commonwealth of Massachusetts,have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Power Fluid-Actuated Impulse- Pumps, of which the following, taken .inl connection with the accompanying sheet -of drawings, forms a full, clear, and concise description.
My invention relates particularly to that class of pump which is designed for attachment to an internal combustion engine by connection with the spark-plug opening of the engine cylinder, the pump being operated by the engine compression. Pumps of this character have found special service in inflating pneumatic tires of automobiles, and while my invention `has been primarily devised for this particular purpose, I do not wish to be understood as limiting in self in this respect, as the pump may e used as a compressor for charging tanks with pressure or put to other specific uses to equal advantage.
My invention comprehends a pump of this characterhaving triple cylinders of equal diameter arranged in tandem, the cylinders havingreciprocated connected pistons therein, means being provided for the passage of the operating Huid through the cylinders and for the further compression of it by the pistons therein.
Another feature of my invention is to provide a novel form of `air-inlet or pressure-valve.
Referring `to the accompanying s heet of drawings, Figure 1 illustrates a vertical section of a pump made in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a fragmentary detail of the lower portion of a pump modified to accommodate the inlet or breather valve which I have designed for the purpose of admitting air to the engine cylinder.
In detail, the numerals 1, 2, and 3 indicate superimposed cylinders connected in tandem by means of collars i and 5. Separating these cylinders are partitions 6 and 7, forming three compression chambers in which pistons 8, 9, and 10 reciprocate, for the compression and stepping-up of the operating fluid which emanates from the engine cylinder upon the `compression stroke of the piston therein. The ends or extremities of the pump are provided with caps 1l, 12.cap 11 being provided at its lower extremity with a threaded extension 18, adapted to screw into the screw-threaded spark-plug opening of the engine to which it is attached. The upper cap 12 is provided with a ball-check-valve 14, normally held to its seat by a spring l5. This ball-check-valve is` permitted a small amount of movement under the action of the air pressure being delivered, a pin 16, projecting from the cap 17, permitting and iiniting `this movement. Extending laterally from the upper portion of the cap 12 is an outlet 18, having a screw-threaded end or nozzle to which the flexible tube which conveys the air to the tire is connected.`i Rte,- ciprocally mounted within the cylinders are the pistons, which are connected one to another in tandem by means of two hollow piston-rods 19 and 20, which in turn are connected together by means of a screwthreaded coupling` 21. The top of this couplino'is ground out to provide a seat member for the ball-check 22, which is normally held to its seat by the spring pressure exerted by the spring 23,`the movement of the ball-check 22 being` limited by a depending pin 24:, which also serves to retain the spring in alined position. The piston 8 is connected to the lower end of a hollow piston-rod by means of a screw-threaded connection 25 and a set-screw 2G. A collar is provided with a laterally-extending flange 27, having` an extension 28, which lits within the bore ofthe lower cap 11for the purpose of cushioning the piston at the end of its down stroke by the trapping of the fluid between the flange 27 and the cap l1. Mounted upon the fiange 27`is an inverted cup-shaped leather washer 29. Between this washer and the lower portion of the hollow piston-rod 19 is a cup-shaped metal guide member 30. The piston 9, which is connected to and carried by the screw-threaded coupling 21, consists of a cup-shaped leather washer 31, clamped bctween a cup-shaped metal member 32, and an inverted cup-shaped metal guide member 33, these being fastened together by suitable screws 34. The metal guides 30, 33, and 5:36 do not fit the cylinders closely, a slight clearance being allowed to provide for the passage of atmospheric air and compressed air during the operation of my pump.
The construction of the piston l0 is somewhat similar to the construction of the pistion is used, atmospheric air will be sucked in through the breather ports 31, unseating the disk valve 4:7 against the tension of the light spring 49, this air being sucked into the engine cylinder.
By reason of the construction of my pump, as heretofore explained, I am enabled to reduce the diameter of a compound pressure producing pump of this class, still` obtaining the same amount of pressure as would be obtained if differential cylinders were used. That is `to say, instead of having a large power cylinder and a small compressing cylinder, I employ two power cylinders of equal diameter, the joint capacity of which is equal to the capacity of a single power cylinder of a differential pump of equal efficiency. In addition to this, by reason of the particular construction of my pump, I am enabled to manufacture it at small cost, utilizing metal stampings and tubing in the place of cast metal parts.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new herein and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. Animpulse pump adapted to be operated by the compression of an internal combustion engine, comprising a plurality of cylinders of equal diameter, one of which is adapted to be brought into screw-threaded engagement with one cylinder of said engine, pistons reciprocally mounted within said cylinders and means for admitting to the under side of each piston, Huid pressure that has previously been compressed in the cylinder of said engine to which said pump is attached.
2. An impulse pump adapted to be operated by fluid pressure comprisinga plurality of cylinders of equal diameter arranged in tandem, connected pistons therein, means for admitting to the underside of each piston fluid under pressure to operate them on their working stroke, and means for permitting the air in one of said cylinders to pass the piston on the suction stroke to enable the piston to compress it upon its succeeding working stroke.
3. An impulse pump adapted to coperate with the cylinder of an internal combustion engine, comprising a plurality of cylinders of equal diameter arranged in tandem, a reciprocating piston in each cylinder, a hollow connecting piston-rod connecting the respective pistons, said rod being provided with ducts or passages communicating with the underside of two of said pistons, and a cheekvalve controlling the passage through the hollow piston connecting rod, substantially as described.
4. A pump of the character described, comprising a plurality of power cylinders adapted to receive compressed fluid from a source of supply, actuating pistons in said power cylinders operated by said compressed fluid, a pressure cylinder, means of communication between said power cylinders, a valve-controlled means of communication between said power cylinders and said compression cylinder, a piston in said compression cylinder, said piston being connected and operated simultaneously with the pistons in the power cylinders, substantially as described.
5. A spark plug pump of the character described, the combination of a plurality of power and compressing cylinders of the same relative diameter, simultaneously operated pistons in said cylinders, means for affording communication between said cylinders for the operating :fluid to the underside of said pistons to cause them to move ontheir working stroke so that the piston in the compression cylinder will perform its compression operation, and means for trapping the compressed fluid below the piston in the compression cylinder so that upon the down stroke of said piston, said fluid will be caused to flow into the compression chamber above said piston and be compressed by its succeeding stroke.
(5. A spark plug pump of the character described, comprising a plurality of connected cylinders of equal diameter, a plurality of connected pistons reciprocally mounted within said cylinders and adapted to be operated by the fluid compression; of one cylinder of an internal combustion engine, means for causing said compressed fluid emanating from said engine to actuate said pistons and means for increasing the pressure of said engine compression fluid to a higher pressure by one of the pistons of the pump.
7. A spark plug pump of the character described, comprisingthree cylinders of equal diameter in tandem, a piston in each cylinder, a piston rod provided with a passage communicating with the respective cylinders connecting the pistons in the respective cylinders, a valve controlling the passage through the piston rod, and means for admitting the fluid compression of one cylinder of an internal combustion engine to the un` derside of each piston, and means for causing the passage of said engine compression fluid to the compression space above one of the pistons to be compressed thereby to a higher pressure and a valve controlled outlet for said compressed fluid.
