Description

C. VARGA.
SHOE CLEANING DEVICE.
APPLICATION IILBD JUNE 1,1914.
1, 1 14,944. Patented Oct. 27, 1914.
THE NORRIS PETERS C0 PHOTO LITHO WASHING/0N D C,
CHARLES vanes, 01? ETNA, PENNSYLVANIA.
SHOE-CLEANING DEVICE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES VAneA, a subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, residing at Etna, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shoe-Cleaning Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in shoe cleaning. devices.
An object of the invention is to provide a shoe cleaning device in which there is provided a plurality of brackets supporting brushes removably secured therein and to be moved to a position in close engagement with a shoe by movement of the foot of the oper ator. i
Afurther object of the invention is to provide a shoe cleaning device in which there is provided aplurality of brushes removably secured in bracket arms and which may be removed from the said arms for purposes of cleaning the same or to be replaced by new brushes.
With the above general objects in view and others that will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and thenclaimed.
In the accompanying drawing which shows the preferred embodiment of my invention and to which reference is had herein by like characters designating correspond ing parts throughout the several views Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention. Fig. 2 is an end elevational view of the same showing in dotted lines theposition assumed by the arms and brushes in operative position. Fig.8 is a perspective View of the operating connecting link for the arms. Fig. 41 is a side elevational view of a portion of a modified form of the device, and, Fig. 5 is a detailed perspective View of a portion of the device illustrating a modified form of connecting the base supports and the brush supporting arms.
Briefly described, the invention comprises a support carrying a pair of pivoted arms which carry brushes removably mounted therein and which brushes are adapted to be moved to a position to engage the shoe of the operator and be moved to such position by a linkconnecting the arms above their pivot points and operated by the foot.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. at, 1914;.
Application filed June 1,1914. Serial No. 842,269.
Referring more in detail to the accompanying drawing, the reference numeral 10 designates a base plate adapted to be sethereof onthe 11ns 13 thebrush arms 14.
These arms are caused to assume a normally vertical position as shown in Fig. 2 by having the lower ends thereof increased in size to provide counterbalanced weights 15, these weights being disposed below the pivot points 13 of the said arms.
The arms 14 are adapted to support at their upper ends the brushes 16 and the supports for these brushesconsist in a lower support17 provided withan upturned projoction at its outer end to constitute a guide for the brush 16 and a thumb screw 18 engaging the upper side of the brush and passing throughan inwardly directed extension 19 carried bythe upper end of the arm 14. Each of the arms 14 is of course provided with the supports 17 and projections 19 and fastening screw l8,and supports a brush as above described.
Each of the arms 14 is provided on its inner face above the pivot pins 13 with a lug 20 that is adapted to receive a cross-pin 21 which extends into the slot opening .22 of the connecting and operating link 23. Pressure on the link 23 will move the brushes 16 in an inward direction, and cause the same together with the arms 14 to asipme the dotted line position shown in A modification of the device is shown in Figs. 4 and 5 and comprises a supporting arm 12 forked at its outer end as at 12' to pivotally support the brush arms 14. In
this construction,tl1e lugs 20 are dispensed with, and the link 23 is connected directly to the brush supports 14.
In operation, and assuming that the base plate 10 issuitably secured to a door step or other suitable support, it is to be noted that the brushes 16 will assume the dotted line position shown in Fig. 2 when pressure is brought to bear upon the connecting: link 23 which will move inwardly the upper ends of the arms 14 on their pivots 13. By moving the foot back and forth the brushes 16 will effectively remove therefrom all dust and dirt and the pressure of the brushes on:
1 vertical position by reason of the counterbalancing weights 15.
lVhile the accompanylng drawing shows the preferred embodiment of my invention,
1 do not wish to confine myself to the exact details of construction, as various forms, modifications and arrangements of the parts as shown may be had without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
What I claim as new is 1. In a shoe cleaning device, supporting arms carried thereby,
a base plate, a brush 1 arm pivotally mounted to the outer end o1 each of the supporting arms,
said brush arms provided with enlargements at their lower ends to provide weights, each arm provided with an inwardly directed support at a point adjacent its pivot, the outer ends of said arms provided with inwardly directed extensions, a pair of opposed inwardly directed lugs carried by each arm, and a link having a slotted connection with each pair of lugs connecting the arms.
2. In a shoe cleaning device, a pair of opposed upright arms pivoted thereto, counterbalancing weights carried by the lower ends of said arms, a pair of inwardly directed lugs carried by each arm, brushes secured in said lugs, a link pivotally connected at each end to the arms above the pivot points and adapted to move the brushes in an inward direction when pressed downwardly.
3. In a device of the class described a pair of crossed supporting arms, upright brush supporting arms pivoted intermediate their ends to the outer ends of said supporting arms, brushes removably secured in the outer ends of said-arms, counterbalancing weights carried by the lower end of said arms, and disposed inwardly to cause the said armsto normally assume a vertical position, and a link connected to said brush arms above the pivot, points to cause the brushes to move in an inward direction ture in presence of two witnesses.
r In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses 1 CHARLES. VARGA. Witnesses: I
