I To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, ROBERT F. Sco'r'r and ARTHUR M. HARRINGTON, citizens of the United States, and residents of the city of Philadelphia, county of Philadelphia, and State of ennsylvama; have invented certain Improvements in Bolt-Threading Machines,
"back to a definite distance and held in such position during the operation of cutting a thread of diameter larger than normal.
The characteristic features of our im-- provements are fully disclosed in the following description and the accompanying drawings in illustration thereof.
In the drawings, Figure l is an elevation of a section of a stay bolt machine; Fig;.2 is a broken part sectional elevation transverse to that shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a part sectional bottom plan view of a head to which our improvements are applied; Fig. 4 is an irregular vertical sectional view of the head; Fig. 5 is a sectional. view taken on the line 55 of Fig. 3; and Fig. 6 is a perspective view of a cam comprised in our improvements.
The stay bolt machine, illustrated in the drawings, comprises the frame 1 in which is journaled a shaft 2 having beveled pinions 3 fixed thereon and engaging beveled gears 4 fixed on shafts 5 for revolving the stocks 6, the latter revolving the bolts 7 set therein. Vertical guides 8 and 9, fixed in the frame, control the movements of the heads 10 provided with apertures 11, through which the bolts 7 pass, and the cutters or chasers 12,

cutting such bolts. Rings 14, provided with the circular slots 15, are connected in oscillatable relation to the respective heads by the studs 16 fixed therein and passing through the slots, each ring being provided with the spiral teeth or rack section 17 through which it is oscillated, as hereinafter described. Ring plates 18 are provided with lugs 19. through which pass screws 20-to fix them to the respective rings. 14, the plates being provided with the'cams 21 which engage notches 22 in the chasers 12 to effect the radial. reciprocation of the latter. A bolt 23, provided with a rack comprisin the inclined teeth 24 which engage the test 17 is movable vertically through each head in a way 25 thereof. A coiled spring 26- is disposed on each bolt 23 with its lower end engaged by the bottom of the way 25 and its top engaged by a tubular cap 27 fixed to the bolt and movable inthe way, the spring acting to elevate the bolt and turn the ring 14 so as to retract the chasers 12. A pin 28 is movableavertically in the head into and out of engagement with a socket 29 in the ring 14, the pin being connected by a yoke 30.

When a head has descended so that the pin 31 strikes a stop, as an adjustable stud 32 in the bracket 33. adjustable on a guide 8, the pin 28 is elevated, the ring 14 is released, the spring 26 elevates the bolt 23, the rack 24 turns the ring and the chasers are retracted; being normally held in this position until the head is elevated, the cap 27 strikes an obstruction (as the frame head 1), the bolt 23 is moved downwardly against the action of the spring,
the ring 14 is turned and the pin 28 drops into the socket 29 to hold the cutters in their normal cutting relation.
In order to cut a tapered thread or to enlarge the diameter of the thread, a cam block 34 is connected to the bracket 33 by a screw 35, the block being provided with the inclined surface 36 and the straight surface 37, and a stud or pin 39 is fixed in the ring 14 so asto engage the cam block when the locking pin is disengaged from the ring and the latter is turned by the spring. If a tapered thread is to be cut of gradually increasing diameter, the inclined surface 36 is set to guide the pin 39, the surface permitting the ring to turn gradually in the downward movement of the head and gradually I retract the chasers. If a cylindrical thread of enlarged diameter is to be cut, the block 34 is turned through a half revolution so that the pin 39 will engage the vertical surgiving any taper or enlargement to thethread.
Having described our invention, we claim: 1. In a bolt threading machine, the combination with a head having a thread chaser, means for locking said chaser in operative position, and means for automatically retracting said chaser, of means for releasing said chaser and means comprising a former limiting the movement of said retracting means.
2. In a bolt threading machine, a head having a thread chaser, means for holding said thread chaser in the normal cutting po sition, and means for automatically moving said thread chaser, in combination with means for releasing said chaser and means comprising a stationary former for regulating the movement of said chaser and varying the character of the thread.
3. In a bolt threading machine, a vertically reciprocating head provided with thread chasers,- means comprising a ring provided with cams for reciprocating said chasers, means comprising a locking pin engaging said ring for holdin said chasers in their normal cutting position, means for disengaging said pin from said ring, means comprising a spring and rack for turning said ring to move said chasers, a fixed cam,
and means fixed in relation to said ring for engaging said cam and regulating the turning movement of said ring when released by said pin.
4. In a bolt threadin machine, a frame rovided with guides, a racket, and a block having a guiding surface fixed to said bracket, in combination with a head movable along said guides, chasers movable in said head, a device provided with cams connected to said head so as to turn and reciprocate said chasers, means for automatically turning said device, and means comprising a projection connected w1th said device and adapted for engaging said surface to regulate the turning movement of said device.
5. In a bolt threading machine, a framerovided with guides, a bracket connected in adjustable relation to one of said guides, a block having guiding surfaces connected in adjustable relation to said bracket, a head movable along said guides, cutters movable in said head, mechanisms for reciprocating said cutters in said head, means for automatically turning said mechanism, and a stud on said mechanism for engaging a surface of said block and regulating the turning movement of said mechanism.
