RAIL TIE AND JOINT.
To all whom it mag concern Be it known that I, DAVID HALL, a-citizen of the United States, residing at Higden, in the county of Cleburne and State'of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rail Tics and Joints, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in railway ties and joints, the main object of the invention being the provision of a railway tie which has an enlarged bearing surface upon the road-bed, whereby to prevent the downward yielding movement of the rails caused by the pressure of a train passing thereover and also to provide a joint in the rails which will absolutely prevent longitudinal or lateral movement of the rails after they have once been placed in position upon the ties.
Another object of the present the provision of a. combined railway tie and joint which will possess advantages in points of efficiency and durability, is inexpensive to manufacture and, at the same time, is simple in construction and operation.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter referred to and more particularly pointed out in the specification and claim.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this application, Figure 1 is a top plan view of a railway tie and joint constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on the line 22, of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the central portion of the tie. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of one end of one of the rail sections; and Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of one end of the other of said rail sections.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, 1 indicates the tie which includes the central portion 2 and the two parallel longitudinal side members 3 and 3', said side sections extending beyond the ends of'the cen tral section, as clearly indicated in Fig. 1. The central section 2 is provided at each end with the transverse raised portions 4, said raised portions being arranged in spaced relation and the inner opposed faces thereof are provided with inwardly inclined beveled faces 5. The spikes 6 are then driven into the side sections 3 and 8 and engaged with the recesses 7 in the transverse members 4, in order to securely retain the three sections in their 1 relative efiective positions.
It will be understood that the rails used in connection with my improved tie will be disposed between the raised portions and the inclined base flanges thereof arranged beneath the inclined walls 5, so as to securely retain them against movement after being placed in position.
In Fig. 4 I have illustrated the preferred form of rail joint to be used in connection 1 with my improved tie and, in this form the rails 8, are formed in two distinct sections, the numeral 9 indicating one form and the numeral 10 indicating the other form. The sections 9 are provided at each end with the transverse recesses 11 and the extreme ends are provided with vertical longitudinal rewhich will be hereinafter more fully set forth. The sections 10 of the rail joints are provided at each end with the reduced tongues 14, the-outer ends of which are provided with the enlarged heads 15 adapted to be fitted into the recess llwhen placing the rails in position and it will be further noticed that the tongue 14 will be disposed between the spaced side walls 13 and ar-' ranged within the recess 12. From this it will be seen that the rail sections are securely held against any lateral or longitudinal movement after they have been once placed in position and, in order to retain the same in position a plurality of spikes 16 are driven into the ties and arranged within the notches 17 forming the base flanges of the rails, so as to securely hold said rails in place. It will be noted that after the rail sections have been placed in position, the upper face of the tongue 14 will be disposed in alinement with the upper face of the body of each rail section, so as to provide a smooth and unbroken surface for the wheels of the cars which are adapted to pass thereover. From this it will be readily apparent that I have provided a simple and durable railway tie and joint which can be manufactured at a comparatively low cost and readily placed in position upon the road-bed and it will also be seen that should one of the rails become broken or distorted, it can be quickly and readily replaced by a new one.
While I have shown and described the preferred form of my invention, it will be obvious that various changes in the details of construction and in the proportionmay be resorted to for successfully carrying my invention into practice, without sacrificing any of the principles of the invention or departing from the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described this invention, what I claim is A railway tie including spaced parallel side sections, a central section arranged therehetween and having its ends disposed short-of the ends of the side sections, transverse enlarged portions formed at the ends of the central section, said transverse members having their opposed faces inclined inwardly, said transverse members extending beyond the sides of the central section and adapted to rest upon the upper faces of the side sections, and means engaging the side sections and the outer edges of the transverse members to retain said sections in position with respect to each other. i
